The Dragon Reborn: Summary
(Saban 11?–Saven 10, N.E. 999)
In the Mountains of Mist, a disillusioned Rand parts company with Moiraine and Perrin, disappearing into the night. They chase him, following signs of a ta’veren’s passage through several towns, and arrive in Jarra. There, Perrin meets a man who has gone completely wolf.
Moiraine tells Perrin what little she knows of wolves and of Dreaming; Perrin shares what he learns about the Forsaken in the wolf dream.
Egwene, Elayne, and Nynaeve arrive in Tar Valon. Publicly, they are branded as runaways and set scrubbing pots. Privately, the Amyrlin Siuan Sanche sets them hunting the Black Ajah, starting with Liandrin and twelve others who fled the Tower in advance of the girls’ return. Egwene and Nynaeve are nearly killed by a Gray Man; Sheriam Sedai tells them to speak of it to no one. Egwene and Elayne are raised to the Accepted, and Verin Sedai gives Egwene a ring that will allow her to enter Tel’aran’rhiod—the World of Dreams.
Mat is Healed of his bond to the Shadar Logoth dagger, is visited by Lanfear, and is told that having sounded the Horn of Valere makes him bound to it. The Amyrlin gives orders to keep Mat on the island, but Elayne asks him to deliver a letter to her mother in Caemlyn and gives him a letter of permission signed by Siuan Sanche herself. Mat heads out into the city, dodging a pack of Darkfriends set to kill him. He dices for coppers, then silver, and finally gold—carried on a wave of supernaturally good luck. At his last stop Mat finds Thom Merrilin, and convinces the gleeman to go with him to Caemlyn.
Egwene and company are led by a novice named Else Grinwell to a cache of items, which leads them to suspect the Black Ajah sisters have fled to Tear. Siuan Sanche informs Nynaeve that the real Else Grinwell left the Tower days ago; Nynaeve says they are aware of the trap but intend to spring it anyway. Siuan gives them money for the journey, with her blessing.
Perrin, Moiraine, Lan, and Loial arrive in Remen, where two Hunters for the Horn have caged an Aiel named Gaul. Perrin frees him, drawing the attention of several Whitecloaks—who he kills—and a third Hunter named Faile, who follows them downriver.
Egwene, Elayne, and Nynaeve set out by ship, but a river accident forces them ashore. They meet several Aiel, including Aviendha and Rhuarc—both of the Nine Valleys Taardad—who explain the Aiel’s hunt for He Who Comes With the Dawn, then rescue the trio after they are kidnapped by brigands.
Perrin and company arrive in Illian, where Moiraine makes Faile swear to obey her, and they learn that the Forsaken Sammael rules the city. They flee, dispatching a pack of Darkhounds with balefire.
Mat travels by ship to Aringill, where he rescues the Illuminator Aludra and is given a gift of fireworks. He travels to Caemlyn, is rebuffed at the palace gate, and climbs the garden wall to gain entry. There he overhears Lord Gaebril—Morgase’s current lover—plotting to kill Elayne and her friends. After delivering Elayne’s letter, Mat makes haste for Tear.
Egwene and company arrive in Tear, where they board with a local herbalist—Mother Guenna. They set a thief-catcher named Juilin Sandar searching for the Black Ajah. Mat and Thom arrive right on their heels, but miss them and spend the night in the storm, searching.
Perrin arrives in Tear, meets a local blacksmith, and tries to decide how he feels about Faile. Moiraine informs them that Be’lal is posing as a high lord; she believes Rand is in the city somewhere.
Juilin Sandar is caught by the Black Ajah and Compelled to betray Egwene, Elayne, and Nynaeve. The trio are taken to the Stone of Tear right before Mat arrives, seeking a remedy for Thom’s persistent cough. Mother Guenna informs Mat of their predicament, but advises against trying to rescue them.
Perrin, Faile, and others in the city have dreamed of Rand holding the powerful sa’angreal named Callandor which is housed inside the Stone of Tear—and which will herald the Dragon’s rebirth when drawn. Faile walks into a trap set for Moiraine. Perrin, at the risk of his life, enters the wolf dream to free Faile.
There are Aiel on the rooftops of Tear. Mat ignores Mother Guenna’s warning, using Aludra’s fireworks to make himself an entrance. He and Juilin Sandar enter the Stone and find Egwene—who has managed to enter Tel’aran’rhiod and shield their Black Ajah guard—along with Nynaeve and Elayne.
Rand reaches the Heart of the Stone and faces first Be’lal—who is dispatched by Moiraine—then Ba’alzamon. Perrin frees Faile from the Black Ajah trap. Rand claims Callandor and defeats Ba’alzamon yet again; this time we see the body. Rhuarc reveals that the Aiel are also called the People of the Dragon, and believe Rand is destined to lead them.
