I have looked a lot of different Seven Towers of Malkieri images and they all have a similar look/feel to what was shown on the show.   I havent read the last GN of EOTW and now I learn there was a comic - guess that is next on my to find list.  ?

I bought the series month to month when it was released! Some great art and some of the covers are really nice.

I'm going to risk a comparison here.

GoT takes the approach of showing just how horrible medieval settings were for women and faces it head on while having a few women powerful or skilled enough to rip down that world.  The Show takes the same approach and so fans see what is largely a portrait for medieval times.

Wheel of Time approaches gender imbalance by instead flipping it.  The setting deliberately justifies women being the primary authority and imagines a world where men are stereotyped and often dismissed the way real women suffered for many years.  Because our main three protagonists are still men and men who become powerful enough to dominate the world around them, many people missed the gender topics being broached.

Along comes a TV show that drags them VERY much into focus and makes it abundantly clear what the setting was trying to say and they lose their mind.

I obviously don't say that as a lable for everyone who disliked the show, but if I had a dollar for every person that was confused, outraged or told me I was stupid when I pointed out things like the Aes Sedai being "The Catholic church, but real magic and all women" or other such points, I wouldn't be able to retire, but I also would have made roughly my annual salary.

This definitely seems to be a big issue for the haters. So unfortunate. You’d like to think we’d have come further as a society by now

I outlined this in a previous post, but book readers were nowhere near as incensed by the early seasons of GoT as they are for WoT. An equally devoted fanbase (which was comparatively large), but none of the initial backlash. Detractors did exist, but not nearly on the scale as WoT

To me, this is a clear sign that the changes made in WoT are of a completely different animal than those made in GoT. Personally, having read and loved both series before experiencing the TV adaptations, there is a real difference between the approaches that both shows took.

IT IS NOT AN ACCIDENT that GoT did not receive the same backlash that WoT has. WoT fans aren't uniquely toxic. It's 100% due to the nature and attitude of the changes made that WoT has been so divisive.

I remember them being pretty much the same ?‍♂️
And some of the WoT fans do appear to be uniquely toxic from what I’ve seen ?

This kind of hand waving away the criticisms is intellectually dishonest.  The situations are not at all analogous, and certainly cannot be presumed.

For my part, I was very excited for GOT TV because I really loved the books, but the e tv show was so good it has completely replaced the books in my imagination.  Every character, with the possible exception of Jon Snow, has become their TV versions.

The difference between the two shows is as big as the universe.  You can’t put them on the same scale.

People who defend the show really don’t understand the criticisms if they think they are the usual people don’t like change.

Meh the people criticising are the same as GoT… this change was pointless it doesn’t fit my head canon so I don’t like it. A valid opinion but when they try insulting other people for liking the show they lose all credibility with me.

not from what i can see.

again not really, and no where close to anything GoT got.

It depends where you are I guess. More people I know are talking about WoT compared to GoT season 1 but that’s an unfair comparison given how much more accessible WoT is compared to GoT season 1. I’m from Australia so no HBO over here. Back then torrenting was the only option unless you wanted to wait to buy the dvds.

    simple math

    10944*9 = 98496

    14882*8 = 119056

    10154*7 = 71078

    5104*6 = 30624

    3104*5 = 15520

    1891*4 = 7564

    1912*3 = 3824

    1804*2 = 3608

49795 total voters. 349770 total score.

    349770/49795 = an average of 7.02.

that means the average is around 70%, which would be around a C minus in school or a 1.7 GPA. hardly something to celebrate.

Cheers. Confirmed what I expected that removing the top and bottom ratings wouldn’t really affect the overall IMDb rating. Close to my rating of the season as a 7.5 as well.

This conversation makes me sad. Hate is hate.

If you seek to give useful criticism to any artist, communicating with respect and dignity for another human being is a good place to start.

Don't expect a platform that allows hate speech, private DMs (of unknowable content), and unfettered commentary, good or bad, to be the utopian communications center everyone seems to insist it is.

There are far more effective ways of respectfully communicating opinions/grievances/critiques than the cesspool that is the norm.

And by the way, "how do you sleep at night?", or "why don't you kill yourself", are poor substitutes for "I didn't like the way Egwene was dressed in this scene. Can you explain your rational for dressing her in this form of attire? Thank you."

I only got Prime to watch this show (fine Bezos, take my dumb money for your midlife rocket crisis) so whenever my friends stop being interested in watching and discussing it, and I stop caring about what happens to any of the characters, I'll end my subscription. But honestly, unpopular book fan opinion, it could be really different from the books (much more than it currently is) and still be a good TV show, and I would be fine with that. I enjoy not knowing exactly what will happen.

Depending on your tastes I'd recommend the following Amazon Tv:

    The Expanse

    The Boys

    Hunters

    Jack Ryan

    Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

You're reading me wrong, I totally can believe that part of her statement.

The assumption she's arrived at, that "this is only happening because I am a woman", however, is pretty ridiculous, and instantly refuted with one look at Rafe.

    I see what you mean.

I'm obviously making an assumption (educated guess based of past trolling of women that has been made public) that she is getting more loaded vitriol that she didn't directly mention.

But if the exact same people who say "how do you sleep at night" say it to Sarah as well as Rafe then yeah not sexually motivated. It's the other shit that I'm 100% sure is in her DMs that is sexist.

  10. 7 minutes ago, ilovezam said:

I mean the two examples of the vitriol she brings up in her video are:

    1. How do you sleep at night?

    2. Go kill yourself

For the record, harassing anybody is wrong, but these things are absolutely things people would be throwing Rafe's way. Maybe she gets some women-specific hate, but by and large the hate obviously comes from people who genuinely dislike the show and not motivated by sexism.

Heck, the people who even know who Sarah Nakamura is probably read 13,000 pages of a series where women dominated socially and politically and is chock full of awesome female characters.

Again, any hate thrown her way is still wrong, but blaming it on sexism is how you end up in a Ghostbusters situation and I'm praying hard that we're not already on a path to a Ghostbusters situation.

I'm just going to take her word for it that she is aware of the gender of the people dming her ?‍♂️

  11. 3 minutes ago, ilovezam said:

Yeah... Don't condone abuse of any kind, but one look at Rafe's Instagram comments or whatever completely refutes her assertion that "they're coming after me like this only because I'm a woman", which really feels like a rehash of the tired Ghostbusters style of deflecting criticism.

So. Many. Women. Hate. The. Show and it's so disheartening to see their voices invalidated by people who insist that the detractors mostly come from a place of sexism.

I can think of a number of things they are saying to Sarah that they wouldn't say to a man... "they're coming after me like this only because I'm a woman" may be referring to the type of vitriol that is likely in her DMs, rather than just the casual show-hate stuff Rafe gets - though his is more than likely contains a lot of homophobia.

The music was wonderful. The costumes were gorgeous. This makes me happy and sad, because I would have loved to see more of BOTH of their works in this world going forward. Oh well.

Same here. I know there has been some criticism of the rings but I don't mind them ?‍♂️ I know when Amazon (finally) get merch sorted I'll be buying one.

In his initial comment. Balfe created a bit of anxiety as it sounded like a "loved being a part of Season 1 - goodbye". He clarified thankfully

Me saying “WoT TV is not that good” isn’t opinion…It really is not that good of a TV show! If it was a movie it would be of the straight to TV variety…What joy you get from the show or how much someone doesn’t like it is separate from whether the show is any good or not….

I’m starting to wonder if you understand what an opinion is. You keep giving one but then state that it’s not an opinion ?
