The world we live in is full of people with character flaws - why would books be different?

written character....as in the context of the discussion , we were talking in particular how M, N and E miscommunicating is a bit basic.

and yes, there are people like that, but to me its out of character for those three, they have a world to save, Mat can call on the memories of multiple generals, (i.e, multiple experience of negotiations and communication), Nyneave is a wisdom and Elayne has been guided into ruling a country from a young age (diplomacy was probably introduced semester 1) so the character flaw of them not being able to discuss Rand wanting Elanye to come to Caemlyn to rule is really frustrating.

the more you analise it the worse it gets....she litterally has to just walk into the palace and assume rule, she could discuss the issues with the  imaging and process with Mat without a second thought and a solution would present itself.

  2. yep,

i have zero problems with the Aes sedai being taken down several notches as the epic progresses.

im not going all 'angry old man shouting at the clouds' but thered be a fair amount of issues if that story line was to be written and published today, it would become more base, old male wizards would be shown the light by dynamic younglings, which is a shame really, because even though my first read i really couldnt handle the girls, but in subsequent reads, their evolution is pretty cool, its something they couldnt do unless they were exposed by a stale institution too arrogant for thier own good.

Rey........ they aint, and thank the light for that.

but yes, the series is a bit dated in some aspects...i think i just bury myself in the world he created instead of being dissappointed by chracter flaws.

  3. on a basic note...the whole Mat, Nyneave, Elayne stuff in books 6-7 is too overplayed.....almost like a three stodges movie.....as if between the three of them they cant have a quick chat to iron out the creases.

i really enjoy Jordans world, but sometimes he goes way to basic with the characters...Faile and Perrin are unbearable for a lot of the time becuase of this....at least the M,N,E charade is just frustrating, with glimpses of them seeing each others points

The only casting decisions that I didn't like were Egwene and Lan. Egwene was supposed to be a stunning beauty that men like Galad Damodred (pretty much the most handsome man in the WoT universe) instantly becomes infatuated with her. Well, mole nose didn't cut it for me. She's not ugly, but she's average, which isn't Egwene.

The guy they got to play Lan should have been JACKED. It should have been a mountain of a man, instead of some guy who is somewhat muscular, but is more pretty than anything else.

If those two are in the second season, then I won't even give it a watch.

To me, Egwene is a beautiful actress.(my opinion)

    absolutely stunning.

ill admit though, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....but both egwene and Nyneave are absolute stunners to me.

the one i need a bit of time with to be convinced is the actress who plays Min, just wasnt what i had in my head, shes a powerful looking women, whether as Min i had in my head as the girl youd take home to see Mum...the girl next door, cute, diminutive...powerful woman, dont get me wrong...but with a more caring nature than the hard edge we see (as a first impression)

  5. GOT was far too rapey and violent, the stuff with Ramsey cutting off the dick was just distasteful....by the time Oberon had his head crushed in it had run its course for me....i mean, i get it, hes sexually open, etc etc...whatever....the list is endless, even when it was a good show, mother of dragons just being used so we can wonder when we'll get to see Emilia Clarkes breasts again.....

by season eight GOT is everything BAD about television....it was an absolute mess of a show, embarrassingly bad....ive been shot down before on this, about the excuse of running out of book material etc etc etc, but thats no real excuse for not putting something accross that was semi coherent....i think you have to look at the show as a complete set...you cant ignore seasons 6,7 and 8...it part of the package

'i know, lets fly some dragons into the enemy teritory just to save some random on a small iceblock...bah, the list is endless....

said it before, WOT just has to stay out of the gutter and even remain semi loyal to the book and it will surpass GOT in my opinion, it will however, struggle to become as popular as GOT, but thats more because the landscape of streaming has changed so much, more than any in show quality.

Amazon, HBO, whoever...if they are aiming to achieve similar impact as GOT with a high fantasy series, are probably in for a big shock...even LOTR wont do it in my mind....

its like having your first Kiss....you cant ever have a first kiss a second time...

the one worry i have with WOT is that yes, its very male centric on certain facets, and in trying to equalize that, it compromises the story....the girls decimating the trollocs at fal dara is a case in point, but im happy to WAFO to see if Rand gets his moments, as he should do, given the book series is basically about his struggle with so many brilliant side stories tacked on.

oh yeah...one massive benefit of streamling the 14 books is storylines like Perrin and Faile will actually improve without so much back and forward to achieve something that could have been achieved with a quarter the amount of page space.....

I just find the story fusturating at times but fair enough sorry I will stop with all the questions  I will post when I finish the story

no need to stop asking questions, bring them on i say,  i wish on my first read through i could bounce off a forum to check my interpretation of events....i mean, im still finding out i've looked at things incorrectly....the scopes just too big to get it all right....im amazed at the amount of people on here that have such a grasp on every detail without even doubting themselves....

just seems like you want to vent, on a forum that is filled with lovers of the book. just seems odd. i might be reading the situation wrong (how ironic would that be!)

  7. @Pembie

just to stick my two bobs worth in, but maybe this isnt the book series for you? its one thing to ask genuine questions about the books, i struggle a fair bit with a lot of it, and COT is a very tough slog, but people have tried to hint that its worth kicking on with, or just skip to the next book, but you seem intent on suggesting the book and the story is flawed or boring with every post.

its all good, theres nothing to suggest you HAVE to like the series, and nothing to suggest fans of the series have to convince you....

FWIW, its a great series, dragged out with some plots that go no where, as if the writer was setting up a whole heap of threads not entirely sure which ones he would use towards the end himself....its worth the effort (not many book series have dedicated websites ) but its not for everyone....and thats cool.

Fain could sense Rand, because of what the Dark One had done to him, for which Fain hated both Rand and the Dark One.  But there's no indication in the books that Rand could sense Fain.  Except for his ability as a channeler do detect agents of the Shadow in general.

      Hide contents

Or for his later-developed talent of recognizing darkfriends.

The other problem with it being Fain specifically, is that Rand felt the eyes moving around.  At a time when Fain was still locked in his cell.

ever had that creepy feeling someone is watching you?

i was thinking of it less literally....i didnt think someone was actually around the corner watching him, i also just thought its one of those things Jordan dropped like a hot rock....

In the 8.2 one about the cast there is what appears to be a deleted scene where MRP are discussing a prank, and someone's (maybe Cenn??) reaction when he finds a badger in his bag.

Shame it didn't make the cut

Still hoping for some deleted scenes to come out

dont be too upset, at least we got to see Steppins madey uppy arc

    Two aspects here.

#1: There may be a call to provide those to any leo that's working a case.  They don't owe it to us.
#2: The whole point of recent pushes has been that you don't immediately demand proof or it didn't happen.   Legitimizing a claim is for courts and legal issues, not here.

Everything before the word but...  yeah...
Stating that you have been abused and that all the abusers were male is stating a situation, it's not a dangerous claim.

Fun fact though, you're not painted as an abusive sexist for disagreeing.  If you didn't make actual attacks and criticisms then you're not part of the problem.  "All my abusers were male" is not remotely the same thing as "All the males who messaged me are abusers."

Yes, reports should be filed.  It may be a futile effort (it will be, because if she files locally, they'll dump the case because it's not their jurisdiction.  If she files in the location the abuser lives they'll tell her no, she needs to file with her local authorities who can send it to them.  Which they won't), but it should still be done.

But what does that have to do with the rest.  Are you suggesting she should file a report and not say anything anywhere else?   I don't understand the purpose of the fourth paragraph with the rest.

ok. so in your eyes, and quite a few others judging by the likes you have recieved, theres no reason to doubt (not even doubt, just ask to look at what has her so rattled), its all just to be taken in good faith.

fair enough, i can accept that.

  11. regarding this SN issue.

is there a call for her to show the abusive texts....wouldnt it be prudent to show it actually happened, i have a lot of distrust for celebrity claims....(slightly different, but still)....this is not victim blaming, but in order to legitimise the claim you should show evidence.

i dont feel i need to point out my opinion on internet abuse, but i also feel just by claiming 'ive been abused and its all men' is a really dangerous claim to make....

as a male, i wouldnt want to be painted as an abusive sexist just because i didnt like a womens work and let her know on social media

at the minimum if death threats have been made she should file an official complaint and hand over the evidence to the authorities, theres no point in calling that a futile effort, lots of things that brave oppressed people have done in the history of mankind seemed futile as a stand alone action, but were the beginning of change.

That's not an Ego/Budget issue (Though that can be part of it).  Let's posit what the pay/schedule would look like if, say, Mat and Agelmar were kept completely the same.

Mat: Alright, we need you to commit for 8-10 years of filming, you can't really take other jobs because you'll be so busy with this.  By the way, for the first 2-3 years we're going to barely pay you and your job as an actor is to stand around aimlessly and occasionally throw in a line or so.  But don't worry, after that you'll be a real character with depth and interesting things and we'll start paying you better.

Agelmar: Alright, so we need you to do this job for a few episodes.  Then we need you to make sure your schedule is free enough that in 8-10 years you can come back and do a few more episodes.   Also, when that time comes you have to be able to look pretty much exactly like you do now as in theory at best 3 years have past and people won't have been able to grow with you across the series so any big change will be really jarring.

agelmar i would forgive (and id guess even the harshest critics would too)  if they just used another looky likey actor. not worth mentioning.

Mats Story has enough bones about it through the series to be able to add stuff, and not compromise the story Jordan wrote. (if the actor palying MC was on bigger money and needed to be utilised)

those are hurdles, but not insurmountable. the issue i brought up is slightly different.....its season 2 and already RJ2 is suggesting he hasnt got enough L and M to work with.........

so even if we can bend a bit and say, yes, give us more Pike, it concerns me about whats he gonna do for ....well....basically half of Jordans complete story? its not that its not a problem, the issue is with the casting, if Pike has to be utilised, why was she cast as someone who dissappears for half the series......

i have some sympathy, shes a perfect Moraine, in my mind, but just because shes a great actress, why does that mean the story needs to change? is that not upside down way of doing things?

to that point, if the show followed the books in regards to M storyline,  id easily forgive the return of Moraine not being Pike, but would prefer it did.

seems like......acting talent first, storyline second......and thats a problem to me....

to clarify though, im just airing my concern based on RJ2 saying he needs to add stuff to keep Pike and Henney front and centre, i accept nothing is confirmed regarding what happens to Moraine and a certain red coloured door frame.

Not making her character more "important" per se, but according to the source, it is a setup to give her and Lan more screentime (https://collider.com/wheel-of-time-season-finale-showrunner-rafe-judkins-interview-season-2/

    And (https://www.cbr.com/wheel-of-time-rafe-judkins-interview/) :

    this really worries me.

i liked the show, so im trying to stay positive.

but the best bits for me were the bits taken directly from the books, i identified with them imediately and loved them, im accepting that some stuff needed to change and/or be compressed, i even enjoy not KNOWING what will happen next based on the changes being made, i actually even am intrigued by changing the narative to being mainly from Moraines POV (not that i agree season one was told mainly from Pikes character).....

but i worry that RJ2 is suggesting here that he hasnt got enough Moiraine and Lan to work with, but needs to keep Pike and Henney front and centre in screen time so is trying to emphasise the parts they do have....changing the story...again....but its also a defensive statement....it worries me....to me it reads like 'what can i do apart from cut up the story, i HAVE to keep my A listers at the forefront, if it bombs, dont come lookin for me, i was forced to these changes'

are we just going to skip the (6/7 books is it?, whatever, its a lot) parts where Moraine isnt front and centre....

no doubt ill be put firmly back in place here by the usual suspects for interpreting it wrong, but i want to be upfront here, im genuinely positive about the show, i just dont want this to stray too far from the story set out by Jordan, i actually subscribe to the view that its not miles away from where it should be, even though some changes seem really clunky and not required.

to date the only bit that really grates is the Steppin arc which was a monumental waste of screen time (IMHO), but im flagging these quotes about Moraine and Lan as a real worry.

Moiraine and Lan are not the main characters of the books......if thats an issue for actors egos/budgets, then look squarely at casting...

I understood him to be saying they changed PF to this, because they wanted the DFs to be more like this, as some of them are in the books. Not that this is PF from the books

ok, maybe....but (to Rafe, not you) why? why change the structure so fundamentally?

youve been gifted this amazing world...use it.

for all the defending ive been doing of the show, the best parts are the bits that stay true to the core of the show, even if its not directly from the book (Logains tears on being stilled spring to mind)

OK, for a couple things that make me curious about season 2.

    From Nerdist.com (link - Nerdist.com season 1 finale interview)

The end of the book The Eye of the World is famously confusing and messy. Can you talk about bringing that to the screen and making the change for only Rand and Moiraine to go to the Eye?

One of the first things I did when I started was talk to Harriet, Robert Jordan’s widow, and Brandon [Sanderson] about: what are the things Robert Jordan would’ve changed about the books with “hindsight’s 20/20?” They both talked about the introduction of Mat and Perrin, and how to have those characters be crystallized earlier in the show than they were in the books.

Interesting that its the first thing he wanted to talk about....'how can we change....'

how about 'as little as possible dude'

Soo many pages to read!  I do not know if this was covered in this thread, and may have been in the interview/article thread, but here are some Rafe interview responses that have me thinking why we have some issues with season 1.

From Nerdist.com (link -Nerdist.com season 1 finale interview)

As Rand and Moiraine visit the Eye, the Battle of Tarwin’s Gap unfolds. It’s the biggest battle of the season but also very intimate. What was it like to find a grounded approach to the battle?

We were lucky because our director, Ciaran Donnelly is unbelievable. He had come from years on Vikings and really knew how to bring this to life for us in such a visceral way. And to never lose our characters in it. You never lose track of, even Agelmar. I think you’re emotionally connected to him at the wall. Amalisa, you are emotionally connected to her with what she’s doing with the women defending the city. So he did a great job of making sure that that emotional connection was there the whole way through this really gigantic battle.

The part of the response in red is why I have some concern moving forward.  It seems he believes they established some emotional connection with these characters for the audience.  I am not so sure they did.  Any emotional thoughts for Amalisa were probably not, "Aw, she is sacrificing herself to save the city that has never fallen." but more like, "Stupid woman, stop killing Nyn and Eg!".

From TheWrap.com (link -TheWrap.com - season finale postmortem interview)

On the battle between dark and light

Peddler Padan delivered a few huge lines in the final sequences, including revealing he’s on the dark side because there needs to be balance. So does that – to use a common superhero trope – make this seeming villain the hero of his own story?

“You don’t get to spend a lot of time with the dark friends in the books outside of the forsaken. And so, we really wanted to make sure that each dark friend that we meet in the show like Dana, who you met in Episode 3, and Padan Fain … that you kind of understand them as people and that their goal is not, you know, the evil. They’re not just evil people who are born evil who want evil,” Judkins explained. “They have complex human emotions and feelings and they probably view what they’re doing as being positive either for themselves or for the world or for their loved ones, or for whatever reason they view what they’re doing as important and we wanted to give that to Padan Fain. And that sets up a lot of what we’ll see in Season 2 with each of our core characters also struggling with the balance of dark and light within themselves.”

The part in red for this quote is a concern for me.  Darkfriends in the books are generally not nice people who think they are doing what is right.  They are generally selfish people who are hoping to earn something great when the Great Lord takes over the world.  Most of them do despicable things to prove their worth.  I believe it was Moiraine who said this about the peddler - "I do not believe I have ever met someone so abject and debased, yet at the same time so foul. I feel soiled from touching him, and I do not mean for the filth on his skin. Soiled in here." She touched her breast. "The degradation of his soul almost makes me doubt he has one. There is something worse to him than a Darkfriend."  Seems pretty evil to me.

There are a couple I need to find that have me curious about season 2, though.  I will post those when I find them again, since this is all about balance.

this is more worrying that anything that transpired (or didnt) in season 1......

in my mind.....the whole Idea of Fain is NOT that hes a tortured soul, but hes been tortured to the point of no return.....hes not even technically a servant of the great lord is he? or am i missing something.....

methinks old mate Rafa is confusing Gollum with Fain....easy to do if you ignore the fact they are in different books, with different motivations and are different species....i mean ThEy ArE bOtH cRoUcHeD oVeR

I’ve been trying to avoid getting drawn into this, but those poll results are a damning indictment.  This is a primed audience of people who desperately want to love the series.  That more than 50 percent of the people most inclined to like the series actively dislike it is incredible.

not really, lets be honest here, we are also more likely to be hyper critical at any small inconsistency.

  19. having thought on it further, the meeting of the whitecloaks on the road pretty much just replaces the Baerlon chapters with outsourcing to other scenes re Min and Nyn being reintroduced to our travellers.

if we accept the show needed to be compressed, and most people at least accept that premise, then it was quite well done really, the WC were introduced and as a threat but not a worthy opponent for Moiraine who walked away after being threatened on both occasions
