Release Date for A Memory of Light + eBook

Jason Denzel

Tor Books announced today that A Memory of Light, the fourteenth and final Wheel of Time novel, will be released on January 8, 2013. Update: The eBook will be released on April 9, 2013.

Here's the original press release:

The first novel in Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time®, The Eye of the World, was released on January 15, 1990. Now more than twenty years later, Tor Books is thrilled to announce the official publication date for the final novel in the series. A Memory of Light will release on January 8, 2013, in the final month of the Year of the Dragon.

A Memory of Light is one of the most important titles that Tor will ever publish. Many of the principal players have been involved with the series since its inception, including Publisher Tom Doherty and Editor Harriet McDougal, who worked with Robert Jordan on all of his books, and who is working with Brandon Sanderson, the writer finishing the series from Robert Jordan’s outline and his notes. This is a landmark publication not just for Tor but for millions of fans of the late Robert Jordan, who eagerly await the conclusion to his epic tale. Everyone involved with the project is committed to making this an ending to remember.

Over the next few seasons, Tor will continue to release new Wheel of Time material, including trade paperback editions of the early novels with new art, new graphic novel editions of the The Eye of the World comics, and other material related to A Memory of Light as we get closer to publication date.

Update (March 15): The January date listed is for the hardcover and audiobook editions of the book. The eBook will come out a few months later in April. This is consistent with what they did on Towers of Midnight.

This is good news about the release date and all! I dont really mind waiting until whenever the book comes out! We have waited this long, so 2013 is not gonna hurt anything! Yet what I am concerned about the most is the fact that ALMOST everybody-tor for example-wants to make AMOL absolutely PERFECT! I know they want it to be a good book. Yet BS has stated that he wants to do about six or so revisions for AMOL. I know that BS, Harriet, and TOR wants it to be a perfect book yet at the same time no human being is perfect and that is a simple fact of life! I want it to be a great book as well. No matter what happens I will be content with whatever happens with AMOL and in the meantime there are plenty of other books to choose from! Thanks for the info dragonmount! Wishing everybody a happy spring!

If the 2 month delay adds a few chapters, I wouldn't mind at all. I know the draft and 1st revision are done; but I still hope that the flesh out some of the things (especially Aviendha and Aiel and the future relations with Seanchan - Mat & Tuon) they might have had happen "off screen".

I really don't get all the negativity about the date. Since when was RJ ever on time with a deadline. I know some others have already said this but I wanted to remind everyone that we are lucky that this series is getting completed at all, so lets keep some perspective. If the editing process is talking longer than usual (which I don't know that it is)it could be because this is the final volume of an epic marathon of a story and there are so many ends to tie up and there are so many ways that Brandon could have contradicted previous elements of the story without even realizing it. The editing team needs needs to go over the book with a fine tooth comb to ensure there are no issues and the ending is as perfect as can be. There will be no more opportunities to include a story element if it is forgotten this time around.

I work in marketing. I am telling you now, TOR is not doing this to "milk the franchise". Of course they are working on ebooks and graphic novels and it's within their right to do those things and I think that is great. However, this release date makes no sense from a financial standpoint. I suspect it has every thing to do with the back end of the writting process and wanting to give themselves plenty of time to do it right.

I've been reading this seriese since I was 17. I am now almost 30. This is the last time I get to anticipate the release of a WoT book. I'm going to savor it. I just got the entire series on audio book and I'm going to take 2012 to enjoy having some great voice actors read my favorite books to me while I wait for the finale.

@donk… How could the last book POSSIBLY be unsatisfying? That cannot happen no matter what. I, as a reader, would be trilled if the book had nothing more than:

“and then Rand went to the Bore and fought the Last Battle. And won the battle. And… And there were three women in the boat… And… And humanity was left to their own devices to fight Trollocks… And there was time of prosperity if not exactly peace. The End”

This series is epic and the end of it can be nothing less. NO MATTER WHAT! :)

In terms of the date and the delay… Well, people waited more than 20 years to hear the end; they can wait few months more than planned.

BTW, does anyone remember this:

“I can’t say, honestly. As I mentioned above, I’ve never done something like this before, and I can’t really project how long it will take to go through the notes and outline material, let alone how long it will take to write and draft. I would say, tentatively, that we’ll see the book in stores 2009, but that’s really just a guess.”

That’s what BS answered when asked about the publication date for AMOL. Don’t you all just love when the things work out according to the plan? :)

I'm so pumped for this  And I don't really care if i have to wait a year. Just as long as the Mayan's weren't correct in the world ending on 2012 i'm happy to re-read the books and be patient. Afterall, I don't want to concentrate on the destination and miss out on the journey.

Totally bummed that A Memory Of Light will not be released before 12/21/12. May not be here to read it!

I have been a fan of the "Wheel of Time" series since 1995. Every time a new book came out I would re-read the series from the beginning. Until Mr Jordan's passing. I would have gladly re-read the series again had the final book been the final book as Tor said it would.

Unfortunately, it was not. I do not know whether making the final edition into a trilogy was necessary or a marketing ploy (though I suspect a little of both) and I will not find out until the final book is published. I have not bought or read the last two books, nor will I buy the final book. I have bought all the books authored by Mr. Jordan but refuse to give Tor any more of my money. I have already checked and my local library has several copies of the last two and I will not have to wait much longer after publication before they have the third. If any of you truly believe that Tor has delayed the ending intentionally, do the same. The book will read just as well for being borrowed as bought.

Although I do not believe it was Mr. Jordan's intent to make this series last so long, it did. I have waited for the ending of this story for quite some time. I, like many others here, have fretted over not being able to finish. I hate starting something and not being able to finish it! Because of that, and and the seeming antics of Tor, I no longer read any series until it is complete.

I have been a lurker on Dragonmount for many years and have just registered now to leave a comment after finding out the release date for the last book. I have been reading the series since the very beginning. On the one hand i am glad to finally see that the series is coming to a close after so many years and to have a sense of closure. I was sad and upset when i learned of RJ's passing. Then somewhat relieved that Harriet had found and agreed to have Brandon finish the series. To a lot of people this series has been important. I understand perfecting the book to its utmost. How long that will take i do not know nor could i speculate. I have waited this long for the book and will wait till it is finally released. I can also sympathize with the comments about fans who are no longer around and are hanging out with RJ now as I have known a few. But such is life. I hope the date will be pushed up but as a true fan of WOT i will wait patiently as always. Does not mean i have to like it!!

Good luck with the book Harriet, Sanderson and Tor.

While it greatly occupied my time over the years I will not be waiting for this one.

I understand that you wish to make it the best book possible but with the waits and missed deadlines I've been forced on to other series and this one no longer grabs me as it once did.

Should the world not end I'll try to pick up a used paperback once they're around.

I know better than to read these threads; and yet I couldn't resist. Better if I had.

CLEARLY there are a lot of folks replying who have never endured a true hardship or loss. So the book release may be delayed a few weeks? Boohoo. I'll buy it when it does come out and read it as soon as I can work up the nerve. Truthfully, it will probably sit on my table for a month while I just think about the fact that it is the last we'll ever see. WOW! I think I can wait a bit longer.

And for those of you for whom this is (apparently) the greatest disappointment of your entire lives, I envy you your lack of tragedy. But I pity you for your lack of life experience.

WTH is this??

First we have to wait until fall 2011, then we wait till march 2012 and now its 2013???

I was at first dissapointed when the book would come out in 3 parts, two extra years of waiting until we finally get the finale. And now this???

I just wanna say: "dragonmount! U s*ck!"

I Have been waiting for what seems to be an eternity and this wonderful series has not yet come to a close. To my joy I will finally be able to finish this epic story. "There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time." I am hoping that someone continues the stories of the wheel of time and keeps this series alive.

no offence to brandon but for me his style has screwed ove 20 years of reading WOT AND AS FOR THE RELEASE DATE well not to bothered about that,BUT am really miffed that the price of the books keep going up as i said Brandons style has ruined the story for me and to have to pay more for his style than the Masters is a liberty on tor books part:((by the by TreeJoe Greed is a problem when its not the real thing you are paying for which the last 3 book are most deffinatley not THE REAL "WHEEL OF TIME"the wheel broke when the Master Robert Jordan woke from the Dream:((Hopefully if they ever get around to the film it will make up for Tors Greed and Brandons style!!

I’d have to disagree with you danny. I felt Brandon did an excellent job. Of course I wish Jordan could have finished the series. However, I would hope that it would not be the Jordan of books 8-11. Really, those were not that good. Since I started the series late, (when book 11 was the current release) I was able to read 8-11 as a whole which helped. To say that Brandon’s style was so bad that it ruined the series is over the top and not a very credible statement in my opinion. I think Brandon had the benefit of this series needing to get somewhere in a timely fashion to it’s conclusion. Thus getting things done, seeing plot threads resolved, and setting the stage for the end. -Instead of more plots, more character development...etc. It’s not perfect, but I think it’s been quite satisfying thus far in the setup for the end. In fact, the Gathering Storm is in my top five books of the series and Towers better than a number of Jordan’s. Looking forward to the final book.

I just finished Mass Effect 3, another long story that had me very excited for the end. The ending was... not good. Terrible writing, bad voice acting, and giant plot holes ruined it. It's 4 days later and I'm still bummed. So if Team Jordan needs a few extra weeks to make the end all it can be, I won't complain. The giant letdown of the ME3 ending made me realize I'd much rather wait a few weeks for Harriet & Brandon to do the best they can. WoT is so important to me, and has been a part of my life for so long, it would be awful to have a sucky ending. I was probably 15 when I started reading Wot, and I'm 34 now. A few extra weeks is nothing if the last book is improved.

As for the "end of the world" stuff- read the Wiki article on the Mayan calendar. They thought time is cyclical, that ages repeated over and over. (Sound familiar!?) The 12/21/12 thing is just another reset of the "long count" cycle. Their calendar doesn't end- it goes on for infinity!

I have been reading this series since I think around 1995, which is a pathetically small time to indicate what it has meant to me as a person, since I began reading it with my closest friends in jr. high and am still reading it with my nerdier colleagues as a professor of English Literature. I can only say this: great works of art are not things that we understand. I don't know if this is accurate, but I sense in some undefinable way that, in this book, something meaningful will be said. It would be a terrific shame if, for economic or social reasons, it became anything other than what it needs to be. For any reason.

I can tell by the comments and complaint of time delays, that those people have never worked in publishing ... lol.

I do, and I know for a fact, even if the book is revised, it can take more than a year for various reasons. For example, the cover arist who has a contract may not be available yet, or ill. Or economic downsizing in the editing department had to de done at the PH, causing drag time. Or worse, health problems with the author or his family, or the primary editor.

Many departments and factors go into the publishing of a book. Marketing is not only not always at blame, but it actually is rarely the cause for delay.

I'll just be glad the book had a date, now.

@aidana willowraven.

sad to hear that the publishing industry is infested with so

much health problems,illnesses or unavailability.

it will be prudent for tor to relocate their premises to the nearest hospital without a moment's delay.

there's no telling what will happen between now and january

2013 lolololololol.....tsk tsk tsk such a fragile industry..

by the way,who is the sulking girl on the new picture?egwene?
