nah I has inhibitions about certain expressions of emotion. it's an arbitrary weirdness.

And in another lifetime, I was a coffeehouse slam poet. I expressed a number of poemy feelings which were not suited for polite company.

 

A lot of poetry was cathartic and helped me work through a lot of very ugly stuff but I run the whole gamut of expression: the strung-out misanthrope, pent-up sexual frustration, fascination with the uterus.

 

You know. Human stuff.

Well, let's give it a try. It's only the third poem I ever wrote, and on top of that a translation, but maybe it's still nice anyways:

 

Imagination

 

On the wings of an eagle

Over hills      Over clouds

 

There, where the sun shines in winternight

With the mind's eye guiding

Where the child rides as king

There, where every heart's filled with light

 

Over hills

On the wings of an eagle

Over clouds

 

Home of every writer

The world unique to every reader

Home of every painter

The picture unique for every viewer

Home of every poet

The meaning unique to every hearer

Home of every musician

The feeling unique to every listener

 

Over clouds

Write the magic of the world

Paint the beauty of the soul

I actually had a bunch of problems with translating, mostly that in the returning sentence, "eagle" is much shorter than the Dutch "adelaar", which also meant I had to replace "meadow" or "field" with "hills" because otherwise it would be too long, and I also had some problems in the first stanza to get the rhyme right. And a lot of small things. I haven't used a translator this much in years because I wanted to find synonyms...
