He had thought he was safe in the air, winging over the trees, soaring like he was born to do.  The movement of air was a language to him, easier to read than words on a page, as natural as breathing.  He reveled and laughed, winging and wheeling and turning and diving, hooting his pleasure as a lord of the winds.

Finally he felt like he had exercised enough, dispelled the gloom and fear that had settled over him as the Marlfox's siege had worn on.  He turned on a current and raced back to the Abbey

"Just in time for supper," he thought.

The sentry spotted the owl as it winged toward the Abbey.  Lantur had learned from the squirrels, learned that trees offered a tactical advantage too great to ignore.  So she had several of her ranks climb trees, sit with bows, watch, wait, and report, with orders to shoot any Abbeydweller they could manage.

And so it was as Nuttail glided over the last remnant of Mossflower Wood, intent upon his descent to the Abbey's outer wall, he did not hear the twang of the bow as it sang out, muted by the wind rushing over him.  The pain he noticed as it connected just beneath his collarbone, a pain that caused a screech of pain, a spasm of muscle, an unusual feeling of fighting against the wind as it gripped his wings and forced them into directions he did not desire.  He spun and tumbled, striking the uppermost ledge of the outer wall, flipping past the stairs and gatehouse, he collided with the ground with bone crushing force.  Those Abbeydwellers who were out and saw the terrible sight cried out in horror and rushed to his side.  By the time medical help arrived it was too late, and it had been too late since the arrow outflew the owl.

Sili Quirrels, Nuttail, Vanilla Town has been lynched.

The Night following the death of Nuttail had been the most sad time for the Abbey since their heroes had marched home from the Castle Marl.  They gathered and they sang and they remembered the beloved owl who had been born with the word nut on his beak.  The timing was too good for Lantur to pass up.

Three rats carefully climbed the the trees that backed up to the South wall of the Abbey, armed with swords and the orders to cause as much death as possible.  They threw grapples across the narrow gap and, tying their end of rope securely to the tree, scurried along underneath and so breached the walls of Redwall, counting on the large memorial fire to hamper the vision of the sentries.

Dannflower was uneasy as he stood amongst his friends, remembering one recently lost.  His unease caused him to back away and begin walking around, trying to put his thoughts in order.  He climbed the stairs to the wall and began to patrol - a silent walk and a silent remembrance of a dear friend.  As he rounded the Southeastern corner he noticed Yurrow, making his rounds, awkwardly holding a spear, a weapon he had so recently begun to learn how to use.  A cry tore from his throat as he saw three shadows sneak up behind his friend.

Yurrow was bored and cold and desperately desiring to be with his friends, warm and loving and grieving together.  Instead he was alone and bored and cold, left with a grief that threatened to overwhelm him at any moment.  He was startled out of his unpleasant musings as a shout arced across the span of the wall and he saw Dann charging toward him at top speed.  He heard a scrape behind him and turned, bringing his spear up to block the descending cutlass, more out of luck than out of muscle memory or skill.  The cutlass sheared through the haft of the spear, leaving Yurrow off-balance and staring dumbly as the rat swung again.

Dannflower gave a yell of anguish as he saw Yurrow crumple before the rat.  They saw him coming and the one who had killed Yurrow shoved his two companions at Dann before turning to run.  The first rat swung clumsily and off-balance and it was easy for Dann to duck underneath, drawing the Sword of Martin the Warrior and bringing is up and across the rat's stomach in one smooth motion.  The rat pitched forward off the wall, wailing as he fell.  Before he hit the ground Dann had parried the swing of the second rat and shoved his sword through his throat.

Panting, the rat threw himself claw over claw as he scurried across the rope.  He made it to the tree and turned back.  He saw Dann running toward him and threw himself down the tree, desperately clawing, half-falling, from branch to branch as he made his way down.  He had no chance.  Dann scurried across the rope with the skill of an acrobat and threw himself at the tree, racing from limb to limb with blurring speed, flying through the branches as Nuttail had flown through the air.  The rat hadn't even made it a third of the way down the tree when death caught up with him in a flurry of fur and steel and fury.

Staring as the rat slipped from the branch lifelessly and fell to the ground, Dann was at a loss.  Two friends in one day was just too much for the squirrel to handle.  He broke down in tears and cried until it felt like he had no more emotion left in him.  Then, he got up and climbed back up the tree, across the ropes, and into the Abbey, hating that he had to be the bearer of such sad tidings, hating that Lantur had caused them so much grief in so little time.
