This isn't really the place for this discussion Ishy, but I'll bite.

 

I've never really liked the idea that only young, naive idealists can be liberals, while bitter, jaded old fogeys have to be conservative. First of all, both of my parents and a lot of other older people I know are liberal and proud of it.

 

Second, why must idealism be considered a negative trait at all? Shouldn't we all WANT the world to be a better place? Shouldn't it be our goal as society to leave the planet in better shape than it was when we inherited it? Shouldn't we want our kids to grow up in a world where bigotry, intolerance, discrimination, hate crimes, greed, corruption, and other evils of the world are forgotten things of the past?

 

OBVIOUSLY that will prob never happen, at least to the extent I'm suggesting. But what's wrong with trying anyways? The greatest times of change in our culture have always been met with strife from those of the older generation, since generally speaking when you're older you're much less accepting of change in general. But once we get past the growing pains, we've always come out stronger and better than we were before. Think of all the injustice that has been eradicated up to this point- why should we drag our feet in getting rid of the rest?

Of course it happened. But only age can teach you the realities of life. Idealism is a wonderful thing, I was full of it when I was young. But life taught me that dealing with reality makes my existance easier to deal with. Dealing with what IS instead of what I WISH keeps me sane.

You show him a video about a tiny premature baby struggling for life and its mum having to watch outside the glass and he is going to blub. Neither will he ever say that baby shouldn't be in that incubator being helped in its fight to survive because its mum can't afford to pay or came into the country illegally.

I have no idea how old you are Des. You know I love ya, we have a ton of interests in common, but you have no idea how much your priorities will change from 25-35, especially when little Des's appear. I used to be you, exactly you. Without the bass skills, but the social skills. And I had your idealism. But working and seeing how the fruits of my labor didn't benefit me, but others, ran my idealism right down the drain.
