Rand not killing women/protector

Rand's opinion about women seems to have gradually changed since mid-series or so.

Early stages, he allowed his Far Dareis Mai to go to battle.

Lord of Chaos, he killed a Whitecloak woman with several men.

Gathering Storm, he balefired Semirhage & Elza. And later another Forsaken with a bunch of women & men.

His inability to kill women is a result of him killing his wife in the AoL combined with a good upbringing in his new life. The more he remembers of his life as LTT, the more he can't hurt a woman. Then his insanity takes over and he starts to hold onto this shread against all rational thought. The scene with Lanfear at the docks was a little over the top given Rand's development as a character at the time, but you also have to remember that he only THOUGHT he could easily kill her at the time. In reality, he was barely able to hold onto saidin, and his attempts to call lightning or fire down on her probably would have failed considering how unskilled he was at channeling at the time, how skilled and powerful Lanfear was, and his position during the battle of basically being defeated and hardly able to hold onto the power.

Rands obsession is a sign of his mental instability. It's probably all a traumatized left over of the cold-blooded murder of Ilyena which still rests deep in his psyche. He is merely objectifying women as his vast inferior by likening them to weak, harmless beings that much be nurtured and protected lest they perish. Rand simply suffers from a very extreme form of masochism and chauvinism that probably has its roots in the traumatic murder of the wife of his previous life.

Perhaps some of Rand's not wanting to kill women also stem from his memories from Lews Therin. Lews killed his wife and all his children when he went insane. Ishy brought him back from insanity just so he could see and understand what he had done. While I have no doubt that not hurting women is ingrained in the Two Rivers way of life, I can't help but thinkt hat some of his reluctance, downright recalcitrance, in killing women stems from the crazy dude hanging out in his skull, screaming hysterically about his dead wife....I would think that would have some sort of impact on Rand's psyche.

Then again, i could be wrong. It's certainly been known to happen.

Not sure about Rand seeing women as weak/harmless.

Lews Therin might not necessarily have been Rand's previous life.

The prophecies seem to imply that the soul has been born many times. Dragon Reborn header

Also, a number of the memories Rand received at the top of Dragonmount might have come from this cycle. Gathering Storm Chapter 50

Not sure about Lews Therin's life contributing to Rand's reason.

Rand seemed to have the opinion before Lews Therin came into his head. Even before he accepted that he is Lews Therin reborn.

His upbringing might be a more probable reason. Many Two Rivers men seem to dislike hurting women.

The exact same Two Rivers men that were contemplating brutally executing unarmed Aes Sedai they were holding prisoner? I think you're fantasizing a bit about the orthodoxy of their belief to protect women.

Rand merely has a borderline obsessive compulsion which probably stems from trauma or from lunacy. He latches onto the obsession in a sense to stay lucid or to stave off a trauma.

Also it is a sign of superiority and contempt towards women. He is equating their status to that of an infant. It is a typical chauvinistic and downright masochist attitude that was heavily combated by feminist in the 1970s. Rands attitude can be summed up in modern terms best with "get back into the kitchen, woman."

Dumai's Wells situation?

Only two of them were contemplating it. Just re-read the scene.

And contemplating something does not necessarily mean liking the something.

Though in a situation of a stranger hurting a known person, most people might more likely protect the known person than the stranger.

I think it can be said though that neither has the unhealthy sick obsession that Rand seems to exhibit?

He was going to balefire her. He was barely trained and not remotely close to his full OP strength and using an average angreal, while Lanfear had an almost sa'angreal (Moraine planted).

The current Rand would likely defeat a full strength Lanfear with the same almost sa'angreal. Men are much stronger in the Power, and LTT is the most powerful and skilled.

Graendel would mind rape people.

Mesaana would have children killing their own parents.

Lanfear started releasing the dark one.

Semirhage forced people to tortue people.

I would say that Semirhage is the vilest and most evil of the Forsaken, followed closely by Grandael.

Semirhage was always corrupted, serial killer type before the War started.

I always saw this as part of the wheel weaving it’s pattern. Instead of saying that rands hatred of seeing women die was bad or sexist etc. I saw it as part of the wheels preservation of humanity for the future. Cultures throughout history have thrown men into battle to protect women for the same universal reason. 1 man and 20 women can make 20 babies. 1 woman and 20 men can make 1 baby. It’s simple math and preservation of cultures throughout history meant preserving the female population so that a whole new generation could outnumber the previous one even if you lose 95% of the men in war.
