The writing team behind the upcoming "Green Lantern" film have been hired by Warner Bros. Pictures to pen two treatments - a 'Lantern' sequel and a film based on the comic hero "The Flash" says Heat Vision.

Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim made the deal which would include them going on to write the screenplay for one of the two projects. Which one though has not been determined.

'Lantern' is currently shooting in New Orleans with Ryan Reynolds as the emerald ring-wielding superhero. Plans for a sequel this far out show the studio is very confident in the property.

Various failed attempts at a 'Flash' film have taken place over the years, including a version which Reynolds himself was attached to. This newest attempt will feature the Barry Allen incarnation of the character and will take inspiration from Geoff Johns’ recent work on the title.

The script is close to being complete

"Green Lantern" writers Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green and Greg Berlanti will be turning in their final draft of the script for "The Flash" film to Warner Bros. Pictures in December reports Deadline.

The trio will also turn in a treatment for the "Green Lantern" sequel at the same time. No-one is yet set to direct "The Flash" though rumours that Berlanti would get the job now seem doubtful.

An source tells the site "He won't want to direct it because he kinda wants to do something in between size-wise first before attempting something that large. If Warner Bros does like the script and wants him to direct it...But that's a lot of ifs. And all of it is moot if they don't dig the script. Green Lantern wasn't real until the studio liked the draft."

'Flash' is expected to be the studio's next superhero feature project after "Green Lantern," "Batman 3" and "Superman".

Moviehole have also picked up a casting rumour that "The Hangover" star Bradley Cooper is under consideration for the titular role.

If true it makes for an amusing irony. Cooper was originally going to play "Green Lantern" but lost out to Ryan Reynolds, whereas Reynolds was originally set to play "The Flash".

"The Flash" screenwriter Marc Guggenheim tells MTV News that there's a good reason they've chosen to use the original Barry Allen incarnation of the character for the upcoming film adaptation.

"It's very similar for the whole reason we went with Hal for the Green Lantern. That's the Silver Age character. That's the character people grew up on. That's the name first associated with that character. So part of it is honoring the legacy aspect, and the other aspect is just practical - you can go forward, but you can't really go backward. You can't start with Kyle Rayner, and then do a movie with Hal Jordan" says Guggenheim.

He adds "Just from a practical standpoint, I feel it's better to go in a linear, generational fashion than it is to double back - which is not to say that Kyle and Wally aren't phenomenal versions of the character. They are, and they are near and dear to my heart. We just have to get up to them."

Guggenheim also says the villain Chunk will not appear in this first movie.
