Should I?

I would like to take a vacation...not a terribly long one, just a week, because I don't really think I can afford more time off of work than that.

I have a plan and everything, I'm ready to actually book the trip (flight+hotel), it's in the second week of June...

I'm just not sure if I should do it or not.

I want to go to Provo, UT, for a week.  Partly because I've never seen mountains in person and partly because DSage lives about 20 minutes from Provo.  He won't be able to get enough time off of work to come visit me until at least September, and I'd like to be able to at least see each other once before then if possible (that's a long way away, ya know, when you've wanted to meet for a couple of years already, almost were able, and then couldn't).

So that's why I want to go there in particular.  I can book flight+hotel for about $750, which is pretty good, I think, considering I spent more than that on DCon, all told, and I took a bus there (which was still cheaper than flying). So I found a deal I like.

I have the money to book it right now, I'm still living at home and I no longer pay rent (back to chores and helping out around the house), so I can save up my money a little more.  If I estimate about $800 for the trip, I still have about $500 in my bank account, and I have a couple more paychecks coming before the trip, plus I'll have some afterward.

My main concern is school.  I have to pay for a couple classes I failed my first semester, and then I can reapply for financial aid and start fresh in the fall.  I do want to do that, surprisingly, since I've gotten a lot of priorities sorted out since the beginning of this year.

If I take this trip, that does set me back a bit, school-wise, though.  I mean, with my next couple of paychecks I'll be more than able to pay off the debt for those classes, I believe, though I'll have to call and make sure.

I guess my main dilemma is this: I can afford the trip money-wise.  I want to go, I have reason to go...  I am just having a hard time seeing the downsides of the trip but I know there have to be a few, and I want to know what other people think--is it smarter just to wait till September, for DSage to come here, or is a week-long vacation in June, funded by myself, a good idea?

Obviously if anyone has any questions I will answer them, I don't think I've put all the relevant information in here but I put everything I can think of at the moment.

Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks! :D

Thanks for your input, Charis! :D

I talked to my mom, and she's not entirely opposed to me going, which was what I was worried about--I'm old enough that she can't really stop me, but naturally if my parents are against my decision, they can make it really tough for me if they want to.  At least as long as I'm living here.

My dad might be a different story....which is one reason I'm posting about this--if I'm going to lay this plan before my dad, I want to make sure I've got all the holes filled in and that it's a sound plan so he can't really object.

The overtime idea is a good one, Charis, I'll talk to my employer about it and see how she responds to me asking for a week off in the first place, and then see if she's opposed to me working extra when I return...

My mom's biggest concern was, I think, that I do need to save up for when I move out on my own and get my own place...I don't know when that'll be, though.  Since I plan on just getting my Associates at the community college here before going to a 4-year college, I might end up living here for the next 2 years anyway, and at most I'll move up to the main campus in Cedar Rapids, since I don't know if I could handle living on my own and paying for college at the same time, at least not with this job.

So...yeah, I'm of the same opinion as you right now, that it sounds like a good plan.  *crosses fingers and hopes no one finds any holes in it* ;D

It sounds like a fairly solid plan to me...

Your mom has some legit worries, though... just think about how nice it will be to get out of the house someday! But it doesn't sound like this is going to break you financially, and it would prolly be really good for you to go and vacation.

And I knew that you would know that I would want you to know that I would want one.  Via telepathy and the Bond of course.

:D

No idea Meesh.  No idea....well, A idea, but not AN idea....

You only live once - go for it! It sounds like you've planned things out very responsibly, and you might regret it if you don't go. It sounds like something you really want to do, and something you've saved up for. There will always be bills and obligations in life, so sometimes you just have to take a chance and do something fun to maintain some balance!

I actually just had something very similar happen in my life. Al Jenn came to visit me, and instead of staying in the area we went to Portland together even though we had only talked online, and while there we met one of my souvras on here.

It was something I will never forget, and I had a lot of the same problems that you did, both with time, and a little of the money, and most definitely had to deal with the parents.

I would say that you should go do this. I know it helped me with where I am in life and is something I highly value memory wise.

You look like you are gone through every thing. :)

Thank you, Aust, you do have a great way of putting things. :D  Thinking of it as balancing...that's definitely something I can remember and appreciate. ;) :D

Wow, that is so cool, Limi! :D

I agree, trips like these can definitely do a lot for a person, both immediately and in a lasting way.  I'm glad yours was a great thing for YOU...and if you think that me going on mine will be good for ME, well then... I should definitely try and make it happen if I can. :D

Do it Meesh m'dear. Like aust said, you only live once. Go have fun and enjoy life. You dont want to miss out on this sort of stuff. Go and have fun
