"The Wolfman" director Joe Johnston has begun press rounds for that movie, and of course everyone's asking about his next tentpole - Marvel Studios' "Captain America".

Johnston tells Film Journal they're currently in pre-production in Manhattan Beach with Rick Heinrichs hard at work on the production design.

"It's the part of the process that I love the most. We have eight or ten really talented artists, and we all just sit around all day and draw pictures... It's that phase of the production where money doesn't matter" says an obviously very excited Johnson.

Presently the plan is to begin the film's action in 1942 & 1943 during the Second World War, and "then forward to what they're doing with Captain America now... The stuff in the ’60s and ’70s [comic books] we're sort of avoiding."

The film will go into production later this year for a July 22nd 2011 release.

With "The Wolfman" press junket taking place over the weekend, director Joe Johnston seemed to be asked by all the media involved about "Captain America" and to a lesser extent "Jurassic Park IV". Unlike other filmmakers who're generally dismissive or tight-lipped, Johnston proved quite forthcoming. So much so in fact I've broken down the various information revealed into bullet points just to get through it. Amongst the facts garnered:

Johnston aims to have casting finished in a few weeks before he heads to London on March 1st. The 'Captain' himself will be an unknown and he's currently testing half a dozen guys between 23 and 32 years old according to Collider.

"Chuck" co-star Ryan McPartlin confirmed to Moviehole he tested for the film, while a rumor at Big Shiny Robot suggested "One Tree Hill" star Chad Michael Murray tested for the role.

Red Skull will serve as the film's villain, a Nazi threat that causes the U.S. to turn Steve Rogers into 'Captain America'. (Thanks Coming Soon)

There's a lengthy origin story for the costume which Johnston went into details with at the The LA Times. Short version: Rogers is initially forced to become a propaganda symbol at USO shows where he wears the costume (made out of the US flag) and hates it. Later on in the film he "reclaims some of its imagery". Initial costume will be very much like the Jack Kirby version in the comic. Secondary costume will be less gratuitously patriotic - "more like a traditional set of fatigues, with lots of straps and buckles".

The WW2 superhero team The Invaders will serve as co-stars, a European team of around six people who will fight alongside the 'Captain'. (Thanks CHUD)

Meanwhile HitFix sat down with Johnston to talk a fourth "Jurassic Park" and he admits its likely a long way off - "Steven's busy right now with the stuff he's doing and I've got to do "Captain America," but hopefully afterwards, we'll find time to develop it." He also re-iterated an old scoop about the film essentially serving as the start of a new trilogy.

The Villian has been cast!

Hugo Weaving ("The Lord of the Rings," "The Matrix") is reportedly in talks to play the villain Red Skull in "The First Avenger: Captain America" for Marvel Studios says Heat Vision.

In the comics, Red Skull engaged in espionage and sabotage as Hitler’s right-hand man in the early 1940's. Put into suspended animation after a fight with Captain America, he's also revived in modern times.

Joe Johnston, who is directing the project, worked with Weaving on last month's "The Wolfman". Weaving has also shown a knack for acting under a motionless mask in "V for Vendetta", making him ideal for a role that will likely place the actor under a ton of makeup and potential FX-enhanced elements.

More casting news: Channing Tatum and Ryan Phillipe are up for the role of the Captain himself

Ryan Phillippe and Channing Tatum have seemingly joined the shortlist of finalists for the titular role in Marvel's "Captain America" adaptation, adding to the four we learned about last week (read about that here).

HitFix first broke the news that Ryan Phillippe had joined the list, a fact Phillippe himself confirmed yesterday at SXSW where he told MTV News that he's "going in to meet" on the film.

Meanwhile Deadline reports that Marvel has approached "G.I. Joe" and "Dear John" star Channing Tatum about the role.

The site also reports that British actresses Keira Knightley, Alice Eve and Emily Blunt are all under consideration for the role of Peggy, the female lead in the film. The studio is currently testing the actresses for the role.

"Captain America finally reaches climax"

There have been wars that have gone quicker than the "Captain America" casting saga of the past few weeks. Rampant speculation is rife and every man and his dog seems to have voiced their opinion on who should be cast.

Actually things finally seem to be coming to a head this weekend. It started Friday afternoon when IESB.Net reported that the shortlist of candidates had been narrowed down to just three names - Chris Evans, Channing Tatum and Sebastian Stan.

Stan was the new name to that list, the young actor from "The Covenant" has risen to prominence in recent years on the small screen, demonstrating great work as the scheming son of Ian McShane's ruler in NBC's short-lived "Kings". He's more recently popped up in a less interesting role in The CW's "Gossip Girl".

A few hours later Heat Vision reported that Marvel has apparently offered the role to Chris Evans (who didn't even screen test), a deal that would include him starring in up to three "America" movies plus "The Avengers" movies and appearances in several other Marvel movies.

The catch is Evans is committed to the rom-com "What's Your Number?" which is scheduled to shoot this Summer, the same time when 'America' kicks off filming in London. The offer hasn't officially been confirmed by the studio as yet, but it does look like all the talk is finally coming to a close.

So Chris Evans got the role of Captain America, but Sebastian is still in it.

Though he missed out on playing the titular hero, hunky actor Sebastian Stan (TV's "Kings," "Gossip Girl") will still be involved with Marvel Studios' "The First Avenger: Captain America" film.

Several sources report that Stan has signed a multi-picture deal to play Bucky Barnes, a sidekick from the early days of the comic who became the Soviet assassin Winter Soldier, and later briefly the Captain himself after the death of Steve Rogers.

Initially Barnes was an orphan who discovered Captain America's true identity and partners up with him to fight the Nazis during World War 2. He was seemingly killed in the same plane explosion that hurled Rogers into the North Atlantic sea where his body was frozen and then revived decades later.

In 2005 Barnes returned - the character having been rescued from the sea by the Soviets. Struck with amnesia and now sporting a bionic arm to replace the one lost in the explosion, he becomes a ruthless assassin for them.

Stan's deal is expected to include not just the "Captain America" film but "The Avengers" and other Marvel titles. Filming on the project kicks off this Summer in Europe.

The news comes as Marvel Studios has finally issued a press release officially confirming Chris Evans will star as Steve Rogers/Captain America.

Hottie with a Body to play Peggy Carter

28 year-old British actress Alice Eve ("She's Out of My League," "Sex and the City 2") is the front-runner to play Peggy Carter in the upcoming superhero project "The First Avenger: Captain America" for Marvel Studios says E! Online.

Both Eve and fellow Brit Hayley Atwell ("The Prisoner," "Brideshead Revisited") have apparently undergone a second screen test this week in London for the film. Previously mentioned candidate Keira Knightley is said to be no longer in the running.

In the comics, Margaret 'Peggy' Carter fought in the French Resistance during WW2 who served alongside Captain America on several operations.

Whomever wins the role would join both Chris Evans as the titular Steve Rogers and Sebastian Stan as James 'Bucky' Barnes. The film goes into production this Summer for release July 2011.

I'm really hoping this turns out well.

Director Joe Johnston ("The Wolfman," "Hidalgo") has finally spoken about the casting of Chris Evans in the title role in "The First Avenger: Captain America" reports Earth's Mightiest.

Much as Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart got 'youthified' for the opening scenes of "X-Men: The Last Stand" with the help of some clever CG mapping, it sounds like Chris Evans will be 'wimpified' to portray the pre-serum Steve Rogers.

Johnston says "Casting Captain America is really casting two roles...Steve Rogers before and after the transformation from 98 pound weakling to perfect physical specimen. I can't divulge how we're going to do it, but the performance will be Chris Evans from beginning to end."

The change will make up a big part of the character - "One of the interesting aspects of the character is the effect that kind of total transformation would have on the his psyche. It gives the character more dimension and the actor playing him a wider range of interesting choices."

Johnston confirmed that Evans didn't audition for the role at all - "He came in to the art department to say hi, saw all the jaw-dropping art and designs on the wall and reacted the way I'd hoped he would. It was really his wonderful enthusiasm for everything he saw that cinched the deal."

More Casting information.  Also, JOSS WHEDON IS DIRECTING THE AVENGERS MOVIE!!!!  AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

Marvel Studios announced in a press release yesterday that Hayley Atwell has been cast to star as Peggy Carter in the studio’s anticipated "Captain America: The First Avenger"

In the early comics, Peggy Carter fell in love with Captain America (Chris Evans) while they fought together in the war effort. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation.

According to previous reports Emily Blunt was the original top choice for the role but declined the offer. Atwell and Alice Eve were then said to be the top contenders in the running with recent screen tests in the UK being a key decider.

Unlike with Evans where the official casting was announced weeks after the decision was made and widely reported on, Marvel's press office got the news out on Atwell's official casting with great speed.

Atwell has been seen in the likes of "The Duchess," "Brideshead Revisited," "Cassandra's Dream" and the recent mini-series remake of "The Prisoner".

Meanwhile Pajiba reports that Joss Whedon, who was hired earlier this week to direct Marvel's "The Avengers" movie, will apparently perform both re-writes on "The Avengers" script and possibly a polish of the "Captain America" script.

Reposting this since my original post got lost in the move.

Stunt double, so the suit should be adjusted to offer more protection than the one we will see in the close-ups. With that in mind, I think it looks quite a bit of awesome.

It is not Captain America without some HYDRA goons...Althpough these seem to wear the symbol of the Red Skull, who never lead the organisation, only supported them.

I wish they'd show us a trailer already!

They haven't even finished filming! It's not out for 9 more months.

Patience. There'll be something for this (& Thor) before the end of the year.

If you are into vehicles and Captain America, then good news!

Marvel Studios has announced they plan to sell practically every vehicle used during filming of "Captain America: The First Avenger" at an auction to be held by Historics at Brooklands in England reports Screen Rant.

A total of 53 cars, trucks, ambulances and school buses, some with logos and actual bullet holes, will be auctioned off on March 3rd. Each is an authentically restored working vehicle, no replicas, and all were used in the film. Most have no reserve, and most are expected to sell for under $10,000.

You can bid on any vehicle of your choosing by phone or online – even if you're not a UK resident. A full listing of what's on offer can be found by clicking the photo below of one of the many vehicles to be on offer.
