I dunno.. it just seems a bit unrealistic. Just finishing the chapter on Shadar Logath..  First of all.. here we have 3 boys hunted by foul, evil, animalistic killers.. still distrusting the only people who seem to be saving them from those killers at every turn.. and then walking into a place like Shadar Logath, and trusting to walk the span of the city in search of treasure, separating from the rest of the group.. when just 1 hour before they were fighting for their bloody lives..  I dunno...

Plus, it strikes me as crazy that neither Lan nor Moraine elected to say anything like, "stay close to us.. this city is very dangerous.." or anything..

Sorry just annoyed a bit, mostly with Mat who is pretty stupid in the early parts of the story..  Needed a place to vent..

It's totally realistic for Mat's character. You may be rereading the series with a little bias knowing what is going to happen to them, and how they are going to grow up. At this point all three of them are ignorant country boys, and immature. Mat is even more so then the others, with a hankering for adventure to go along with it. The fact that the journey had mostly been boredom, topped with Moiraine giving him the false impression that the "Trollocs won't come in here" make it so that it probably would have been out of character if Mat hadn't done what he did.

Hell, I think a lot of us would have done the same thing at 14 or 15. I know Mat is a little older then that....but hey, he's a country boy who's immature for his age ;)

^ i agree, it wouldn't have been Matt had he not gone off adventuring and bringing Rand and Perrin along to share in the trouble making.

and i think i remember Moraine saying that the city was dangerous and implying that they not wander off.

that said, Matt annoys me up until Shadow Rising, then i start to like his character.

out of the three women you mentioned, only nyn annoyed me.  i liked egwene from the beginning and grew to love her after all the aiel traing and her handling the sittes in Salidar :)

as for elayne .....  i feel a kinship with her and  love the strength of her character.  then again, it's because i'm a redhead  ;D

I must say, I have grown to really enjoy Egwene and what she has become. Elayne still anoys me though. Esecially after Winters heart when her actions directly lead to the deaths of Vandien and all the soldiers that had to go out and rescue her. Especially after Bridgett and Aviendha councled he to excersive caution.

edit: I'm sorry, it was in CoT and I do not believe Avienha was there. But Bridgett did want her to be more cautious and I thought she rushed into the whole mess. I mean, trusted the word of a known theif without ever the thought of doing any followup investigation.

I don't think it was until my most recent reread that I realized how little of substance we really get to see from Mat until TDR. In TeotW he is just one of the kids for half the book....then he gets the dagger and is layed out for most of the book. PoV is rare if there are any at all(I can't remember for sure). TGH he barely has any air time at all, let alone PoV. He could practically be just one of the Shienerians along for the trip.

It almost seems like Jordan realized he was letting a good character go to waste because Mat really shines in TDR.
