ooc: Well first congratulations!! You have gotten to the point where I have managed to have a somewhat clear idea of how exactly the training will take place. So before you get bored and leave, here's the first post. Now, the idea is simple - first we'll make a trip to an oasis. Let's how well you can survive in a desert ;)

The sun would not be up for several hours, however there was already activity in the Deep Shade Hold. And one of the people who were up and about was the clan chief Ghaul. Today there was to be a training trip for three young warriors - Jelana, Braelin and Rhulad. The trainees have been warned in advanced to meet with the clan chief at this hour. They were also instructed to take with them provision for just one day. And when arriving at the meeting place, Ghaul was pleased to see that all three were present and his instructions were followed to the letter.

"I see you Jelana, I see Braelin, I see you Rhulad. The point of our journey will be Selin oasis, which is about 3 days journey."

Even if there was any surprise from the Ghaul's announcement, none of the three young warrior before him showed any. They simply nodded in acknowledgement and looked at him for furtehr instructions. Ghaul smiled.

"Well I won't be the one planning the trip itself, that is your task. This will be your first test, to see how well you can survive in the Three Fold Land. Feel free to discuss it among yourself, and when you're ready we'll set off."

   Ghaul

ooc: Well ok, as you know the Three Fold Land is an almost barren desert. But it is not just sand, it's combination of sand and rock. There is an oasis here and there around which there is some growth, but as a general rule you'll find little plant life in the Three Fold Land. They are plenty of animals though, mainly reptiles and insects, many of which are poisonous. They are also good eating though! And of course they are some big predators such wolves or lions. So plan the journey, feel free to include caravan stops if you want, and let's have some fun

Jelana had been on time, carrying a makeshift bundle containing a day's worth of food and water at her side. She wore three spears across her back, and even though she preferred to fight unarmed they did come in handy when she needed to hunt something. At seeing Ghaul, she walked up to greet him, and be greeted in turn.

- "I see ya Ghaul."

As the Clan Chief told them of the assignment he had in mind for them, she couldn't help but look in the direction she knew Selin oasis to be in. Though it was in the lands of another clan, Aiel were generally expected to know where the oasis were, which was easier than it sounded like considering how little there were of them. Most of the larger ones had holds built almost on top of them, and with good reason.

Looking at Braelin and Rhulad, she considered her options. Asking them for a friendly spar would perhaps not be very fitting, but it was the best way to get to know their strengths and weaknesses for the others to compensate for if they were going to travel in a group. Given that they would all likely be needing their strength, she instead decided to strike up some casual conversation to get some ideas rolling.

- "So uhh... We could hunt lions. They's bound ta have several days worth of meat on them.."

Standing a little over from Jelana, Rhulad faced the clan chief with some trepidation, not sure that he felt ready for whatever challenges lay beyond all of a sudden. Taking a small step back and wondering if he could escape somehow he shook himself visibly, and steeled himself for what was to come. No, he thought, I must not back away now, that would incur toh.

Realising that Ghaul had said something Burgandy nodded at the clan chief and started wracking his brain for what the man had said, and after a few moments realised that he’d just missed the man’s greeting. Focusing on what Ghaul was saying, he listened to the instructions, immediately he started thinking about what he knew to help him survive this. He knew where the Selin Oasis was, everyone here likely did, water was too precious out in the threefold land to not know where to find it.

"So uhh... We could hunt lions. They's bound ta have several days worth of meat on them.." Jelana said after Ghaul stopped speaking.

Nodding at her Rhulad spoke up, “best if we can get one soon, the dried meat we should all have will last us for a few days, but anything fresh will have to be consumed rather more quickly. Also, what water points are there between here and Selin?”

ooc:As it seems real life is keeping Sieve too busy, he'll have to play a bit of catch up.

Hunting lions - that was an amusing thought, and not too far from what Ghaul had suggested when Rhianna first had him plan a trip as a trainee. The matter that Rhulad raised however was indeed a very good one. Ghaul congratulated the trainee in his mind.

"There is one well between the Hold and Selin oasis. It is well hidden, but we'll be able to find it with out a problem."

Ghaul did not say anything more on the matter of water on purpose, he was curious to see if Rhulad will ask for a more dangerous activity often related with gathering water. While he waited though, there was a bit more that he had to add.

"Lions in the Three Fold Land do not have as much meat on them as you seem to think. Yes, they are not exactly skin and bone either, but their meat is extremely tough and almost impossible to chew unless boiled for a very long time. Not to mentioned that lions are active at night, so if you want to catch one you'll have to hunt it at night. And while I do not doubt the fighting capability of anyone of you" - that was the truth itself, they were Aiel after - "in the dark the lions will have an advantage over you because their better vission in the dark. As for what to hunt - think on this, what kind of animals are most often found in the Three Fold Land?"

So far Ghaul had given them something to think about however there was more on the way.

"Don't get carried away on that thought alone though. There is a lot still that needs planning - for example when do we set off, at what time of day we travel? When and where do we rest and so on."

  • 1 month later...

As nervous as he was Braelin was eager to get the training underway.  Some of his nervousness was a result of not knowing what to expect.  It was forbidden for others to discuss the trial with the trainees.  All he knew was that they were to meet with the Clan Chief in the early morning hours.

Arriving early Braelin tried to appear calm while resisting the urge to shiver.  The mornings in the waste were cool if not cold compared to the scorching daytime temperatures.  Dew glistened on the points of his spears as he greeted the others.  Rubbing his smooth cheeks he noticed the appraising eye of Jelana and hoped she did not find him lacking any of the qualities of a would be warrior.  Was she sizing him up or just trying to unsettle him.  It was bad enough to be seen as weak or lacking in front of a man but a woman was another matter.  A young man wanted to thought of well by a woman especially one who had wed the spear.  Braelin ran his eye over her in turn.  He would not mind meeting Jelana in the sweat tent.

Luckily the Clan Chief arrived greeting them each by name then giving them their instructions before Braelin could get himself in trouble.  Braelin had no choice but to admire the Clan Chief on sight.  Something about the Clan Chief commanded respect, from all he had heard the man was well thought of by the clan.  Until now Braelin had no cause to meet the man, only ever seen him from a distance.  Even so he hoped to make a good showing for him.

Jelana was the first to speak up and Braelin smiled appreciating her courage.  He would wager his coin on Jelana against a lion.  Braelin nodded as Rhulad mentioned finding food sooner rather than later.  Braelin had nothing to add at the moment so he remained silent.

The clan chief's gaze ran over each of them in turn then when no one spoke he continued.  Ghaul had given them enough to think on.  This trial was more than simply following instructions, the three of them would be responsible for planning the particulars of the trip.

Braelin finally spoke to buy some time to think.  "Not sure about where we will rest but the sooner we leave the better.  We are young, I'm certain we can make it to the Selin Oasis in two days.  I'll bet my belt knife on it!"  He slapped the belt knife at his waist.  Braelin was always looking for a wager.  He laughed out loud just to make sure they took it as such.  He was a fast runner and the others looked in shape but still it was a wild boast that was more of a joke but he would still honor the wager if any chose to accept.

((OOC: sorry for the late and lame post but hopefully we can continue this!))

Jelana grinned as Braelin mentioned betting his belt knife. She glanced briefly at Ghaul, a sparkle of amusement glinting in her eye as she decied to fan the flames a little more. Though she didn't really know Ghaul, chances were he'd be similar to the Aiel she did know, and would react similarly to the taunting and boasting that the Aiel of her age tended to do amongst themselves. Clan Chief or no, Aiel were Aiel.

- "Careful Braelin, not all of us are young. You might just end up losing that knife..."

She chuckled, unable to contain her laughter any longer. If Ghaul reacted like she thought he would, reaching the Oasis in two days had now been upgraded to a point of personal honor. As for her, she was looking forward to it. Light, she'd be at that Oasis in two days even if she'd have to get past Leafblighter to do it. And besides, maybe Braelin would live up to that boast of his after all, though she was going to give him a run for his money if he thought her easy to beat!
