The Mystery of Morgase

I was just responding to another post and I dredged up a query.

Morgase.

She's with Perrin etc and she's masquerading as Maighdin, a lady's maid.

Surely SOMEONE recognises her?! She's the ex-Queen of one of the largest nations, a very prominent figure familiar with Aes Sedai, the tower etc, surrounded by another ruler (Berelain), several AS and the cousin of the Queen of Saldea.

And no-one knows her face?

I know AS are 'above' becoming familiar with rulers other than those they are sent to 'aide' but surely Annoura or one of the other AS would recognise her face? They must know what she looks like - or know her description at the very least? Or think 'she looks like that Elayne girl'?

Aaaahhh, but "everyone" knows that Morgase is dead.

Rahvin killed her. No it was Rand. No it was the Aes Sedai. A rebellion within Andor. ...

She's DEAD, no doubt about it!

Pay no attention to the hallucination in the corner. Morgase is DEAD, and that's that.

So is Cadsuane if you listen to popular belief.

Faile and Berelain may wrack up enemies everywhere they go (not least each other, although I dont personally believe Berelain intends any harm to Faile OR her marriage - it's just a game), but I seriously dont think either is naive enough to believe someone is dead, just because that's what everyone else believes.

I think if they saw someone they recognised, both of them would instantly think "perhaps she's not dead after all".

And, would Bera or Kiruna or anybody else who knew her have recognized Cadsuane if she'd had her hair in a rag and been pushing a mop bucket down the hall instead of sweeping in where she hadn't been invited like a tidal wave?

Cadsuane looks and acts like the pain in the posterior she's always been. Morgase is trying to look and act like anything but a queen.

Exactly. Morgase isnt stupid, she is quite resourceful, and she knows what people expected her to look like as Queen. Do the exact opposite, and she can hide right under peoples faces. She is one of Failes attendants if my memory is right? Who would go round checking some nobles wifes servants to see if they found a queen in hiding? I dont find this odd that she has been disguised for so long, just abit annoying that people STILL think it was Rand who killed her.

Cadsuane wasnt trying to disguise herself when she popped out of nowhere. If she wanted to, people wouldnt have recognised her, of that I am sure.

If EVERYONE told you someone was dead, no matter who you asked the one thing they all agreed on was that they were dead, no matter where you went they all said it, you wouldnt believe them? I mean fine some people dont believe she is dead but it isnt as if any of the people with Perrin and Faile would recognise her disgusied as she is. Morgase being dead seems like old news now, and her death wont have been so big a thing for those with Perrin to be actively looking out for her; getting Faile back was the goal, and merely staying alive. They have all had better things to worry about than keeping an eye out for Morgase (well, maybe not BETTER things, but other things. You get the point. Faile dying would have been a better thing)

trakand_01 writeth: Or think 'she looks like that Elayne girl'?

Perrin sees the resemblance early on, but decides that it might just be coincidence, and does not, so far as we know, mention the possibility to anyone else, apparently not even Faile. The Path of Daggers, Ch. 8, ``A Simple Country Woman'', pp. 192--193 in the paperback edition.

BTW: Even if one of the three Aes Sedai had been to Caemlyn, they might not have been to the Royal Palace or seen Morgase close up. Faile might have noticed the resemblance to Elayne, but might, like Perrin, have dismissed it. And Alliandre is new come to the throne of Ghealdan, so she might never have been to the royal palace in Caemlyn whilst Morgase was Queen either.

Also Perrin and Faile didn't see a whole lot of Elayne the one time that he was around her, so it would be a bit harder for them to make the connectionespecially because they would be looking for a Queen Morgase not the country woman Morgase. No one would ever expect that Morgase would ever travel as anything but what she is.
