Narishma's Task

We learn in TPoD that Rand is afraid of using the two figurines, which is another reason he used Callandor instead.  And he is even reluctant to use that.  As for Narishma nearly getting killed, I always thought it made sense for one of the forsaken to weave traps around it in addition to Rand's.  He would figure that Rand would come back for it and perhaps he could be killed when doing so.  The forsaken probably wouldn't consider the possibility Rand might let someone else handle it.  None of the forsaken would so they would have assumed Rand would get it himself.

Since the Forsaken slept through most of the third age, at least most of them did, they might not be too familiar with the prophecies of the Dragon.

'severed hand"?

Rands hand was burned away with the power , it wasnt severed... but just about anything short of death can be healed. plus if Bale fire burns out the threads of the pattern into history, then the power (in theory) can reach into history ... perhaps a way of recovering the hand thru that.

just an idea.

That about it not being severed is a good observation. Surely the severed hand in Mins viewing cannot be Rands, as technically the hand no longer exists=it got blown up rather than severed (I know earlier I said severed-sorry). Also, wasnt there something else i the viewing as well as the hand?

As for the using balefire to get Rands hand back thing, I really doubt that will happen seeing as they would have to balefire Semirhage, who is too useful now she is a prisoner. I think they will get some information out of her in AMoL. Sure she is Forsaken and unlikely to give answers, but by the end of KoD there are too many of Rands followers (Logain, Cadsuane, Alivia, Nynaeve, not to mention Rand himself) that are on the same power level as Semirhage. Rands Superchannellers (which he takes with him to meet "Tuon") are, in my eyes, the Lights equivalent of the Chosen. They will break Semirhage. It would be good if Rand made Semirhage weep for the sins she has committed

Didn't Min also see a severed hand with Rand in tEotW? or was it covered in blood I don't remember. but if it was a severed hand then could that mean that he'll lose another hand or perhaps even lose his hand again (if it's healed of course)?

With reference to the 'other' traps which Narishma said nearly killed him, that Rand said 'I told you about all the traps' or something to that effect, when reading about the Forsaken i found this about Be'lal;

After awaking from his long sleep in the Dark One's prison, he went to Tear and claimed the great sa'angreal, Callandor, for his own. Unable to touch it because of ancient wards, he lured Rand into the Heart of the Stone to try and tempt him into taking it.

The emphasis is mine. I took this from the 'Pictures of the Forsaken' page on this website.

So, could it be these wards which Narishma encountered? Set to mean that only the Dragon Reborn could draw Callandor?

If they were the same words, that says something very special about Narishma. We already know or assume that he is 'the one that will follow', but if he can overcome wards which Be'lal, one of the Forsaken, could not, that increases my already high esteem of him.

I personally thought those wards were broken by Rand when he first got Callandor

trakand, those wards were the ORIGINAL ones surrounding callandor in its 'display case.'  they don't actually have any 'killing effects,' all those do is make a wall of air, their intricate structure is a 'self-defense' mechanism, to prevent the ward from being destroyed.

I think that the traps that Rand "forgot to tell Narishma about" were traps that he wove. We know that Callandor induces or exacerbates the madness of the taint, so to me it seems most likely that Rand unknowingly wove some other traps or the traps were varied from what he remembered.

Also, the Forsaken couldn't have placed traps around Callandor. Moiraine tells Rand that anyone who can channel would be able to pull it out. Rand replies that anyone who tries would find a nasty surprise. I think anyone else channeling a trap around Callandor would have triggered Rand's trap(s).

Sorry, I mangled two sentences into one. That's what I get for taking a phone call mid-post.

when did she say that?  not to mention the basis?  how would she know what type of ward he wove?

In case it hasn't been mentioned, Rand told Narishma about all *his* traps, but either was too arrogant to think anyone else would dare trap Callandor, or too negligent to consider the Forsaken or Moiraine.

It would have killed Rand, I think. Narishma, being scared and cautious, figured it out.
