If you think Atonement was a shocker, you can't have seen it. By far the best of the nominated films.

On the other hand, a jury that did not even nominate This Is England has less understanding of good movies than the average cow, so perhaps it was a shocker...

I thought that movie came out in 06'?

And aren't the golden globes, not international awards?

Apparently not, since Atonement is just as English as This Is England. And both came -07.

And Marion Cotrillard got a well deserved award for La vie en rose, which is a French movie.

hmm, well, I believe Atonement went to theaters here, I don't think that french one nor england did...

Perhaps, this is england, wasn't mainstream enough? ;)

Get on with it, it's bloody amazing. Even if you don't buy the story, Keire Knightley alone makes it worth watching. I've never seen her so good. She does not really do much, but she ooses star quality like Ingrid Bergman did back in the days.

La Vie En Rose was released in the US.  It had a rather long run at the Art House theatre here.  Most of the movies in those theatres only run for a couple of weeks unless they're amazing movies.  This is England was released in the US, so it just got snubbed.  I haven't seen it, so I can't comment as to how good it was.

I haven't seen Atonement just yet either.  I want to, badly.  Even not seeing Atonement, with all the buzz around it, I figured it could go either way between it and No Country for Old Men.

I'm glad Javier Bardim won for supporting actor.  After his horrible reviews for Love in the Time of Cholera, it's good to see him get aknowledged for doing well.

*smacks some sense into Maj*

I saw Atonement over the weekend.  I kept thinking to myself... wow a period piece romance... soooo fresh and so new... like I have never... ever... seen this before.  The ending was the only saving grace of the film.  I am not saying it was a bad film and yes it did deserve to be nominated for best picture.

Why Empy.. why?  The characters were flat.  I did not care about them at all.  The movie did not take much time developing the people.  We were introduced to them and thrown into their lives.  Stuff happens and I walked out not really suprised.  Kiera masters the art of pouting.  The main guy lead is forgetable.  The only performance I did enjoy was the young Briony... but her part was small.  The best part of the film is the cinematograph which was breathtaking.  Overall the movie was a period piece romance... which has been done time and time again.

Maj have you seen There Will Be Blood, Eastern Promises and No Country for Old Men?

Of the possible best picture Oscars I have seen, this is how I would rank them.

1. No Country for Old Men

2. Juno

3. There Will Be Blood

4. Eastern Promises

5. Atonement

6. Sweeney Todd

7. American Gangster

8. Charlie Wilson's War

Obviously, I disagree ;D

Perhaps it's me being more used to European movies, since this is definitly more European than hollywood.

Character development...You get what you need from the story. The characters respond to specific events in their lives, and what is necessary is there. And the way it is set up makes it quite hard to have much of the sleazy sentimental development hollywood tends to smack on the characters. It is Brionys story, and she never met James again, and Cecilia would hardly have invited Briony into her life. I find it quite refreshing with directors who have enough faith in the audience that they do not feel the need to tell us every little scrap of what a character feels about the events that roll out.

Yes, it is a period piece romance, and I love those.

Maj have you seen There Will Be Blood, Eastern Promises and No Country for Old Men?

Seen TWBB and NCFOM. Decent flicks, but both failed to impress me. In TWBB, Day-Lewis is amazing, but I could not find the slightest interest in the story. NCFOM...If I want to see bizarre characters I rather watch a movie by David Lynch.

So I keep Atonement as the best possible Oscar. I do think This Is England is a better movie, but I think it i too English for the hollywoodians to get it.
