New Spring: Summary

In the final days of the Aiel War, Moiraine Damodred and her closest friend, Siuan Sanche, both Accepted of the White Tower, stand in attendance on Tamra Ospenya, the Amyrlin Seat, and her Keeper of Chronicles, Gitara Moroso. Gitara is suddenly seized by the Foretelling, and speaks a prophecy about the birth of the Dragon Reborn, a man fated to face the Dark One in the Last Battle as the world’s last hope. She then dies. The Amyrlin swears Moiraine and Siuan to silence and mobilizes a group of trusted searchers to find the infant in secrecy. The Accepted in the Tower are given the task of collecting the names of women who gave birth in the final days of the war, supposedly to grant them a gift in honor of the Tower having survived the Aiel War. Moiraine and Siuan, who understand the true purpose of the task, begin combing through names and stories to find a baby who fits the parameters of the prophecies.

Moiraine and Siuan complete their testing and are raised to the rank of Aes Sedai, but become enmeshed in schemes and plots in the Tower, keeping them from the secret but most important work of finding the Dragon Reborn. The quest becomes more urgent when a series of murders reveal that hidden forces within the Tower are working to ensure the boy isn’t found alive. Siuan monitors the messages to and from the Tower while Moiraine flees Tar Valon to search for the women on their list and their babes.

Lan Mandragoran, the uncrowned king of the fallen nation of Malkier, wants only to go north into the Blight, to avenge his dead kingdom by dying in an unwinnable battle against the Dark One’s corruption. But the refugees of Malkier still hope for their nation to rise again, and Lan’s first lover, the ambitious Lady Edeyn Arrel, is using Lan’s name to rally the refugees to her banner. The news of his name being used for a hopeless cause diverts Lan to Kandor to confront the Lady Arrel.

Moiraine and Lan meet on the road to Kandor’s Aesdaishar Palace, and while at first mistrustful of one another, find common cause in defending against enemies who seek to kill them both. In the palace, they encounter Merean Redhill, a powerful Aes Sedai Moiraine knew in the White Tower, who reveals herself as a murderer and a member of the Black Ajah, a secret group among the Aes Sedai dedicated to the Dark One and to ensuring the Dragon Reborn doesn’t survive to fulfill his destiny. Moiraine and Lan join forces against this foe, incurring terrible loss before killing Merean. Moiraine convinces Lan to give up his hopeless war against the Blight and to join her in protecting the Dragon Reborn from the Black Ajah. It is the same war against the Dark One, but a war they have a chance of winning. Lan agrees to become Moiraine’s Warder, and together they begin their quest.
