A Crown of Swords: Summary

(Taisham 11–21, N.E. 1000)

Rand returns to Cairhien after Dumai’s Wells to find that Colavaere has crowned herself queen, and banishes her to a farm. After an argument with Perrin over the Aes Sedai held prisoner by the Wise Ones, Rand banishes him as well—but this is only a ruse to send Perrin and Berelain to rein in the Prophet Masema.

On the march north with the rebel Aes Sedai, Egwene feels Moghedien escape the a’dam. She discovers that Lan is alive and bonded to Myrelle, and sends him south to join Nynaeve. Several Aes Sedai swear fealty to Egwene.

The Seanchan take Amadicia, allowing Queen Morgase and her entourage to escape from Eamon Valda. Sammael scatters the Shaido from Illian to Ghealdan, sowing chaos, and Elaida sets Seaine Sedai hunting the Black Ajah.

Back in Illian, Rand visits a camp full of Cairhienin rebels and runs afoul of Padan Fain’s dagger. Cadsuane rushes him to the Asha’man for Healing.

Mat learns that Whitecloak Inquisitor Jaichim Carridin is a Darkfriend. Mat warns Nynaeve and Elayne who, after an embarrassing negotiation with the Sea Folk, decide to use his ta’veren nature to help them find the Bowl of the Winds. While Mat dodges Carridin’s Darkfriends and the increasingly insistent advances of Queen Tylin, Nynaeve and Elayne stumble upon the Kin, who lead them to the _ter’angreal _cache in the Rahad. There, they encounter Black Ajah and a gholam, but escape with the Bowl and with their lives—however, Mat is left in Ebou Dar when the Seanchan attack.

Rand wakes, then immediately takes the Asha’man and Bashere’s Saldaeans to Illian, killing Sammael. Rand is crowned king.
