I guess I was thinking people were proposing an earlier demise to Suian than in the books, like in the next season.  I may have interpreted those posts incorrectly.

I don't necessarily think they're going to go with the Tower split any earlier than in the books, but I suspect when they do it they will kill Siuan off instead of having her and Leane escape.  The reason being -who they have cast, I cannot see someone of Sophie Okonedo's  calibre sitting on their heels for a couple of years to be a regular in a TV series like this.

My own credentials are weak.  I've got only three copies of the Silmarillion sitting on my bookshelf...  And only in English.  I've got only three copies of LoTR too, in English.  (One each in a very few other languages.)  And Christopher Tolkien's books, Tolkien's letters, a dried blade of grass that once grew across the road from Tolkien's house in Oxford, a pint glass filched from a pub where he liked to meet with friends, that sort of thing.  Not in the least bit obsessive.

Aah, but do you have a copy of his translation of Beowulf?  -I ask because I got stupidly excited when I found it on the shelves in Waterstones about 2 months back.

Death takes time to sink in.  Attacking a False Dragon, shielded though he might be, is not the definition of cool and collected.  His action is a textbook example of berserk.

You and I are unlikely to agree on this!

No, death does not take time to sink in, that is an emotional reaction of a human being.  We are talking about a magical bond being snapped.  It is clear from the books the only thing that stopped Lan from going the same way was that Moiraine had transferred the bond, even then he was trying to fight it.  The instances we have of Aes Sedai dying in the books shows it as being completely uncontrollable, lashing out at anything and everything.

That was neither cool and collected nor berserk.  He was in control when he attacked -though it was not the smartest decision he made, he was still in control.

We must have different ideas of what "berserk" means.  Launching himself at a False Dragon is berserk in my dictionary.  And, thanks, I should have said intensely depressed too - part is even more necessary.

Berserk -out of control with anger or excitement; wild or frenzied.

When Kerene died, the reaction was mild.  He went running to see her.  What was portrayed on screen was *not* someone out of control with anger.  While he was clearly distressed he had enough control to run to the cave, identify the target and attack that one person.  Perrin attacking the trolloc was 'berserk'

I'm pretty sure if we have another warder-goes-berserk scene somewhere in Season 7 or 8, you'll be complaining that it detracts from the story then, or slows it down, or that we've had it before.

But we haven't had *any* warder goes berserk scenes.  We've had an angry warder and a sad warder but not a berserk warder.

I believe one of the biggest failings by the writers is having EF/TR be more worldly and subsequent cut training scenes while fleeing from the trollocs as well as mat and rand learning from Thom.

Both of these changes have had a net result in lowering the development of our 5 main characters.

Brandon Sanderson said they felt that particular 'coming of age' story -for want of a better phrase had been overdone.  I agree with you, in aging everyone up they've lost something that was central to the story.

To answer the original post about how this might affect things down the line, I interpreted this scene as foreshadowing for a tragic ending for the two of them, rather than a rescue. They might get a mini-reunion on the road or a flashback together, but large part of the lead up to the oath sequence was to drive home that duty trumps love, and they are willing to sacrifice a future together to do what must be done. That was a goodbye, not a see ya later.

If Siuan does ever call Moiraine back to the tower, I think she will be deposed and presumed dead (or actually dead) by the time Moiraine gets there, or it will not actually be Siuan calling her back (but Moiraine thinks it is) and that will lead to something bad (maybe Moiraine's downfall from Min's vision).

I think both actresses are great and liked them together though, so I wouldn't mind being proven wrong about this!

    Pure speculation here.

Siuan has already caused Moiraine's downfall by sending her to the EOTW where she was stilled/shielded.  I may be giving the writers too much credit but the oath Moiraine swore involved her being called 'home' not back to the tower.  It depends on where she calls home.  Remember her speech just before they reached TV 'home is this saddle, these boots, this brooding man by my side.'  It would be a very Aes Sedai thing to do to twist the words.

A simple message for Moiraine to meet Siuan at their love shack would therefore be enough to allow her to return to the Tower if she so chose.

That said, I do think they're going to kill Siuan off.  'We always think we have more time' etc. it felt like a good bye.  I also think having someone like Sophie Ockenado as a regular will be seriously expensive and complicated unless they go with a change of actress after she is deposed.

I doubt it, but I enjoyed her moments in season 1 and I'm looking forward to whatever her arc is in season 2. She is a strong focal point in TEOTW book, so I'm not surprised she took center stage in the show for the season 1 equivalent of TEOTW. Plus, she's very talented, so why not make use of her acting ability as much as you can? I wouldn't be surprised if she goes through the doorway at the end of season 2, or very beginning of season 3, but we'll see.

I was actually referring to the fact she couldn't have known about the two events Liandrin accused her of not telling the tower because she couldn't be in multiple places at the same time.  -Incidentally that would have been an easy response to the accusation.

    I totally agree.

And that's what should have triggered all the Aes Sedai in the hall, who spent decades in crafting the proper way of speaking following the oaths and listening other AS doing that as well.

But how do we know that this is not the practice for this 'turning of the wheel'?

Perhaps in this version, they have decided every time an Aes Sedai is sentenced for something she must swear to accept it.  It doesn't make a great deal of sense given the 3 oaths but it may be something the showrunners have gone with.  They've certainly changed a number of ways the tower operates already.

It was pretty clear in NS that it was not acceptable to interfere with another Aes Sedai's business or outright ask her what she was doing.  I don't believe in the book White Tower Liandrin would have been allowed to behave the way she did in front of the Amyrlin.

  10. I'm glad to see people are still talking about the WoT show, regardless as to whether it's in a positive or negative manner -it means it's still in the front of (some) peoples minds.

I genuinely believe that Rafe went in with the intentions of making what he believes to be the best version of Wheel of Time he could.  He is an apprentice writer/showrunner trying to do a masters job and it shows.  He hasn't handled his budget well in terms of the time allotted or the money put up.  I'll back that up with his claim that they built Emmonds Field just to blow it up in one set piece.

People are speculating as to whether or not perceived changes will effect the long term story, it's understandable an unsteady hand on the tiller and a lot don't have confidence given what they've seen.  Ultimately for me, I saw a very disjointed series that introduced things and did a poor job of explaining them before dropping them.  Maybe they plan to iterate on them in later seasons but that is irrelevant if the show gets cancelled before they get to it.

You can be as clever as you like writing something but if it doesn't come across to your audience, it doesn't matter. If you fail to keep their attention, they'll watch something else or put the book in the DNF pile.  That is my worry with WoT show.  Season One should have hooked people in, given them enough to want to see the next installment.  Unfortunately in trying to pack too much in, they never really gave a lot of things a chance to breath.

I truly hope they can improve on Season One, and have season Two look like something that was made in the 2020s, not like it came out of the 1990s
