I was puzzled by the number of Rand's ancestors lives they elected to show in E4.  That is a spot they could have trimmed to add other material like having Matt's quarterstaff exercise be in front the guard trainee's and novices instead of a private affair.

    Expand

I had a different take than this, I think getting the back story of the Aiel, the bore and even the AOL Aes Sedai was important.

I understand that it misses the lesson to take the brothers down a notch in front of others, but I think the change in the Mat quarterstaff scene had more impact without an audience, especially since we see Galad and Gawyn showing off in front of an audience, this way contrasted Mat with the brothers in a real way. This was classic book Mat who never fought for glory, accolades or rank.

We've already gotten indications that a decision on Season 4 will be made based on views, and while we'll never actually know what the show's 'success threshold' is, I feel confident in its ability to reach/surpass said threshold just because of the prevalence of Prime Video and the general pervasive interest in the Fantasy genre that dominates societal culture.

Prime video prevalence is is strong, but Netflix is still at least 3 times the number of subscribers

I'm 100% sure that if there is a season4 they will say it is based on the numbers, it's the truth of that statement I question, we all know that the desperation to have a GoT was strong in the development of WoT and RoP and clearly they have got nowhere near it at this point if the numbers are still not there does the studio and Bezos cop the hit to their pride caused by cancelling it or just plow on.

    Expand

We do not know if it is Amazon or Sony that is considering pulling the plug, could all come down to their contract negotiations.

I do not think there is any way in todays streaming market to get a GoT.
GOT was HBO which had market saturation on streaming and cable.
Today even if you have multiple streaming, finding out what is on or even finding things to watch is not easy, even social media is more distributed now, compared to 2011.
With only 8 episodes with 2 years in between, shows like WoT are just going to struggle.
All of the lets keep actor's and everything secret for 2 years? It is like they do not understand the building of a social media and fan following, they need to keep them engaged between seasons.

still too much time spent on the tower politics though.

This is where it is so difficult to appease book readers. The books have so much depth and story with arcs and characters and everyone has their own favorite parts.  The Tower politics, the Salidar arc and Aes Sedai power struggles are some of my favorite parts of the books, and I am thrilled to see them showing more of it, I was happy to see the Galad, Gawyn, Mat fight but would not have cared if they had not because it is not a scene that I ever felt a connection too or cared that much about.

  4. The healing power creep really is an issue.
It makes me really wonder how they are going to elevate Nynaeve having better/stronger healing talents, unless they only focus on her healing the mind, which they have called out as limited.

Yes. If you go back into book 3 most of the entire trek from Falme.to Tear is kinda fluff. I mean some cool stuff but a lot of it pretty much "could have been a memo".

    Expand

It is a smart move,  Jordan had to backtrack for book 4 to build out the story of the People of the Dragon, It works in long form to have all of the culture and story described on the page, and the understanding of dreamwalkers may have told them to take the Stone, but for media it make's a lot more sense of why the Aiel go to Tear at this particular time, and to have the dreamwalking "magic" and things explained on screen.

I think one thing I have found at least with myself, is I have hit the point where I understand the choices of the changes, so in addition to everything that has improved since season 2, my trust in Showrunners and the writers has increased.  I can look at the changes and see how they fit, even if I still have to speculate and try and figure out what they mean.

Yeah na, in the books Rahvin is as strong as a male channeller can be. In the cold opening when Lanfear says Sammael is the weakest, it pans to Rahvin and he has this little smile, like he's gloating / amused.

Yeah, rewatching episode 2 and was amazed at how brazen he was. Cheeky bugger was channeling in the hall, not just Suian and her keeper but most likely the sitters too. Ando being the most prominent country in the south he'd want to cover his bases.

Such a cool way to show how crazy the forsaken are.

Totally scary, I felt right there he could take down the tower on his own if he wanted

What a cool scene in hindsight 😯

    Expand

I caught the Leane pause on first watch, but it took a re-watch to catch how masterful that was played, with editor cuts of the brief changes and pauses when Gabriel is introduced, and when Siuan welcomes him out of character with a smile and warm greetings.
I need to go back and re-watch the first interactions with Elayne, and when he I think he was mentioned in a previous episode.

It is all such great foreshadowing to what is to come, they are unprepared. They were able to show in 15 minutes of show how though many are strong individually, the tower which is supposed to be a line of protection against the shadow, has done nothing in 1000 years to build anything capable of stepping up to the task.

Morgase at the beginning, Felt way too Game of Thrones for me.   Egwene openly defying the Siuan seemed really odd. So much for tower structure and respect.  ALso Moraines hat is horrible.

    Expand

Morgase was a bit brutal, I did not like that they had them swear and then their families killed them, better to have them killed and new family head swear?
I do see the set up though, as now those families have real reasons to go against Elayne, not just some off screen actions while a forsaken is in control of things.

Egwene openly defying the Siuan, this felt odd but not out of character, in the books they just defy behind their backs. The show is more opening showing Egwenes core and unbreakable strength, she has agency of her own much sooner, and after Falme, it makes sense that she will not let anyone keep her  down.

They have also changed it up enough that Accepted and even Novices are older, It is more like College and Grad students than a highschool boarding school.

There is also the book cannon on hierarchy and power levels, it took the wonder girls forever to understand in the books, but I see them pushing this foreword in the show.

  11. The Hall battle did have problems, but I think after re-watching a few times that there are rational reasons for some (though not all) of it.
Sitters are not necessarily the strongest in power, but politically.
Other than Reds, Greens and maybe some of the Blues most would not have trained with offensive weaves against other channelers.
Even those that hunt male channelers are used to a single channeler, and rely more on overpowering to capture, shield and or still.
That moment of sitting while the other BA got up is understandable with book canon. How many times did an Aes Sedai make comments about whether they felt threatened, or their life was in danger before they could act?
Only Leane, Siuan and Allana knew and believed that Liandrin was BA, anyone else would need to know that fact or feel threatened, even to protect Siuan, they would have to know that she was in danger
Then we also do not know how many other Sitters could be BA and decided to sit out Liandrin's mess, but not fight against them?

I am really hoping that they are just holding this off for later, just enough mention of the dark one breaking loose, to foreshadow it can happen later. If they get enough seasons to complete the full story arc, and not have to end on some partial win against just the forsaken.

  13. The Sour Bitter taste receptors genetics is actually very interesting.
Certain people have extra taste buds that pick up bitter flavors more than other people, while some people do not taste bitter at all.
So while some things may taste just sour to one person, they can taste bitter and not edible to others.

Reading up on this, as sour and bitter to me are sort of the same thing, I have found out I am wrong. Though much of what you can find on the internet appears to be slightly confused or contradictory.

But what I have learned is that sour, is a basic taste that indicates acidity, citrus fruits, vinegar, etc. It tastes acidic and pleasant. Bitter, is a basic taste that indicates base or alkaline, and is perhaps the most sensitive of our tastes as poisons are very often basic. It tastes acidic and unpleasant. So they should be on a very basic level very different, but are both for some reason similar. Perhaps not helped by such things as orange fruit being sour, and orange peel bitter.

Peaches I can guess at. Peaches and their close relatives almonds, are poisonous. Or at least their stones are. As are apple seeds. They contain amygdalin, a compound that reacts with hydrochloric acid in your digestive system to produce hydrogen cyanide. But they are not very poisonous. Bitter almonds are the poisonous of the family and are generally treated so that the amygdalin is removed from them, but I think you have to eat a lot to be in danger. Like for apple seeds, about a thousand in a very short period of time. Peach stones probably less. I don't think wild-type peaches are more poisonous, but I guess RJ is just taking in his world peaches still had to be domesticated from a poisonous wild-type. Just in our age we only domesticated apples very recently, and never managed things like acorns, which could have been hugely beneficial to food production in medieval times.

    Expand

Yes historically there is truth to several fruits that were originally poisonous before selective breeding, and still contain poisonous pits/seeds.
Basically though peaches were poisonous in WoT because Robert Jordan decided they should be.

  15. Predictions Lanfear finds Asmodean convinces him to follow Rand
Season 3 Focus will be on Aiel, Two Rivers, Tanchico and looking for BA
The White tower will be politics, introducing Elaida and the fall of Siuan and Leane by the end of the season.
I think things will all depend on if we start in Falme (which is where I hope we do to tie up things and they all start out heading to destinations. )  I mean they could start the whole Lord Dragon thing right in Falme, instead of Tear.
Or they Time skip and we have groups start out split up.

    Let me give some examples:

Great writing = TvThom “They call us gleeman because it’s a silly name that makes us less scary. There’s nothing more dangerous than a man who knows the past.” 🔥

Or Lanfear: “He thinks I’ll betray you.”
    Ishy: “Will you?”
    Lanfear: “Of course.” 🔥

Pretty much all the stuff with Lanfear/Ishy/Liandrin has been very good.

    Ok writing:

Anavere “You got none of his goodness. You’re all mom.”
Moiraine: Tear runs down her cheek.
    The whole Moiraine family story-line.
    Verin and the scooby-doo browns.

    Bad writing:

    Lan pees on a tree.
    Lots of “fake out deaths”.
Siuan shows up briefly & acts completely out of character for - drama?
SL dagger does whatever you need it to - melt locks - open the horn - instant kill - or not instant kill.
    Breaking your own show lore.
Random archer from cliff fires one arrow. Lan catches it. Archer fires no more arrows?
Ishy stands and does nothing while Rand gets healed. He then just lets Rand stab him with a flame sword (that has a heron & then the sword breaks). Heron marks mean what exactly to non-readers?
Not completing story arcs & not setting up pay-offs & somehow dropping characters. Like - what happened to Min? Where’d Loial go?
Pretty much all of Perrin’s lines.

    Expand

I agree with some of this, but not all.

I found The whole Moiraine family story-line to be great writing, for me the writers did a great job at showing the awkwardness of seeing estranged family again and how siblings know how to hurt each other the most.

I think there's a big difference between laying out the arcs and overall structure, and having the individual scenes identified.  So I expect what we'll continue to get is visions that payoff in the season itself, but few if any specifics that go across seasons that aren't really freaking obvious. So we may get the Finn's speech to Mat about Tuon and his eye, and Min's panicked ones at the Tower or Cairhien, but few others.

We can look to some of the foreshadowing we have already gotten.
For Mat, he loses and eye, and dressed in fancy "lord Mat" clothes.

    Well, I still disagree. 🙂

My oldest friend - apparently we've known each other since I was three months old and he was a newborn - is still the very same naughty boy that he was in school, only he hides it better. 🙂  The same applies to everyone else I know too.  So I find character development to be a bit tedious and wholly agree with Seinfeld.

Buut OK if most of you like it, I can live with that, especially given the ages of the people in this series and the fact that they're going through some incredible stuff.

    Expand

Just learning to hide it better is character growth. You are correct though that there can be many people that go through life with gradual or not obvious character growth, and we tend not to see it with those closest to us.
But I have yet to know anyone that has not had any growth or changes, everything creates changes and growth (forwards or backwards) from moving to a new area, new jobs, new friends, loss of someone close to you,  having a new partner or birth of a child.
No change makes for boring books or TV, which is why books, shows, plays... focus in on the characters and or plots that do have growth.

In books we observe change because they can tell us with inner voice. Or they can deceive us with unreliable narrator.  In just 8 hours to develop characters so that we care about them they need to establish that on screen.
It is impossible to really compare to any of the existing Fantasy shows, because of how RJ continually adds new important characters, or brings them back 8 books later.

Liandra will probably replace some of the other BA Aes Sedai that are introduced later. Alanna is actually always a periphery to the main characters so establishing her early is beneficial to later Arcs.

there have been direct views of different level of power amongst channellers, but the signs  - number of threads, precision of lines, speed - are subtle, and I would not expect to get massive discussions about comparative strength.  I mean, whole chapters were dedicated to it in the books. When we have 64 hours, that's way too nuanced a topic to bring up.

The show is doing a great job of adding this though it is subtle, I wish we had more examples from different sisters in the show, and I can not wait until we really have weaves from Nynaeve, Egwene and Elayne.

Even Moraines weaves when Siuan compels her to shut the way gate are different, less flowy, less bright.
