  1. Edalia gave an experimental twirl in front of the mirror. She'd scrimped and saved and managed to buy herself a new dress, so she'd jumped at the chance when Zoe had suggested a night out. It'd give her a chance to wear it.

She tied her hair back off her face and studied her reflection critically. The dress was a lovely shade of deep blue and set off her colouring to perfection. She quickly fastened a silver necklace around her neck, it was a present from her parents and since they had died it was the only thing she had to remember them by.

Nodding with satisfaction Edalia left her room and started to walk to the Sundown inn.

    Edalia

    CotL

  2. I think Edalia will follow the same line as Zoe. She only joined the CotL as she had no other choice. She understands the need for Darkfriends to be hunted down and killed but she is no way fanatical about it and can't understand some of the other CotL's views on the "Witches of Tar Valon" though she'll never say as much....at least not out loud. :P

  3. Aislyn shared a puzzled look with Lorelai and then returned her calm gaze back to the newcomer. "What about him?" Aislyn asked, trying to conceal the confusion in her voice. £The food is over on that tray." As she spoke she gestured to one of the apprentices who brought the tray over.

"We have fresh baked bread and beef stew. There's plenty, so feel free to ask for more if you want."

Aislyn studied the woman in front of her, then what she had said suddenly struck home. "Wait! You were kept in a dungeon?"

  4. Aislyn stood at the entrance to the infirmary awaiting the new arrival. She'd had word an hour since so had plenty time to make sure there was ample food and bedding available for the newcomer. Newcomer's usually were both hungry and thirsty and often in need of a hot bath and a comfy bed so she'd also arranged for hot water to be available. She ran through the arrangements in her mind as she waited, making sure she hadn't forgotten anything vital. Once she had assured herself that all was in order she set her mind to wondering what this newcomer would be like, whether they'd settle in quickly or take time to adjust. Everyone was different and Aislyn was sure that, come what may, she was prepared.

She stood watching the party approach and smiled a welcome to them, then raised her voice and spread her arms in a welcoming gesture. "Welcome, welcome. Please come in, all of you. I've fresh baked bread and hot soup waiting. I'm sure you're all hungry and want to sit down." So saying she stepped inside the door and gestured towards the sitting room where apprentices were already setting out trays of food.

  5. OOC: My bad! *grovels*

"Hello, my name is Aislyn. I'm what's known as a Sage in these parts" Aislyn kept her voice calm and even. "You are safe here and are amongst friends." She paused and studied the person before her curiously. "Would you like something to eat and drink?" And a bath! she thought privately. Whoever this was surely didn't deserve being brought here in a sack of all things.

Gesturing to a chair, Aislyn indicated for the girl to sit. "are you injured in anyway?" Her senses only indicated a few scrapes and bruises, but there are more ways to be injured than physically.

  6. Raslyn followed Zarinen to the Amyrlin's office, doing her best to keep her face serene and her demeanour calm. This wasn't a time to show panic or fear, though, truth be told she was a little frightened. Who could know whether Zarinen's plan would work, she doubted that even Zarinen herself had total confidence in her plan. When Raslyn had heard and agreed to Zarinen's proposal, she had little idea that it could be in play so soon, however, she was the Keeper and a Red to the bone and where the Amyrlin and her Ajah Head were of one mind, who was she to demur. Her mouth twisted in a wry smile as she thought of those Sisters who wouldn't have the same reaction.

Soon they were walking into the Office and greeting Mother. Raslyn was relieved to see that the Ashaman hadn't arrived yet. She was surprised to find herself patting her bun and smoothing her skirts. Once she realised what she was doing she hastily stilled her hands and folded them in front of her lest she fidget again. She would not, could not, appear flustered!

Taking a deep breath she moved to stand next to the Amyrlin's desk facing the door. Whatever happened next, she would be ready.

  7. Deanne was certain that there was far too much smarm in the girl's tone and that smile looked false too, but she decided she'd ignore that...at least for now. She sniffed pointedly and replied.

    "Very well then."

She perched back on the table at the head of the classroom. "You cannot Channel straight away, you have to prepare yourself. you have to open yourself, surrender yourself to Saidar and then you can begin to weave the Elements. You will find that your strength in the different Elements will increase in time. In some of the Elements you may not be able to do more than the most basic of tasks, like lighting a candle, or maybe snuffing it out." Deanne decided that a demonstration was in order as she spoke so she embraced Saidar and channelled a small weave of Fire to light a candle in one of the sconces, then used a small pinch of Air to snuff it out.

She smiled at Evanen. "Most Aes Sedai are only strong in two Elements, a few are strong in three...it is rare indeed that someone is strong in more than three. Myself, I am more than capable in Spirit and Air, and surprisingly Earth and Water too. Fire, however is my weakest by far." Her mouth grimaced as she nodded towards the candle that she had lit. She never did like admitting that she was weaker in some things. But, experience and several visits to the Mistress of Novices had taught her that exaggerating her abilities was not to be countenanced and Deanne just knew that if she'd done it this time she'd find herself on the wrong end of a slipper.  "That was just about my limit. I could, perhaps, do a little more but not much."

Deanne sighed and continued. "Now, how do you feel about starting to learn to embrace Saidar...or do you feel you need some more information?"

  8. Deanne's eyebrows arched. This girl knew nothing?!? Even I knew more than her! She sniffed loudly. "Well there's no need to be sarcastic! Any more of that attitude and I will report you to the Mistress of Novices!" Deanne glared to make her point.

"Now, I shall speak and you shall listen and remember. I will test you at the end." She nodded for emphasis, her braids swinging as she did so. "The One Power is divided into two parts. The male part, Saidin and the female part, Saidar. The male part is tainted by the Dark One and sends those that Channel it completely mad. The female part is not tainted, and only a select few can Channel it. I shall focus on Saidar, you don't need to know much about Saidin at present." Some other mug can teach you that. Deanne thought privately. She rose and started to pace in front of the class, without being truly aware of it.

"Before we get to actually Channelling, you'll need to know the basics, since it appears you don't know even that." Deanne sighed deeply and, taking on a singsong lecturing voice, she began. "There are five elements that make up the One Power. They are as follows: Air, Earth, Fire, Water and Spirit." Deanne ticked them off on her fingers as she spoke. "Men and Women have different strengths in these Elements. Men tend to be stronger in Earth and Fire and Women in Air and Water. Spirit was equal in both, though there have been exceptions." She paused in her pacing and spun towards Evanen. "Have you followed that or am I going too fast for you? Repeat back to me what the elements are and who are stronger in what."

Deanne waited for Evanen to answer with her hands on her hips and chin raised.

  9. Deanne studied the girl in front of her. She's quite pretty I suppose. Deanne thought grudgingly and sniffed. "You're late. I've been waiting simply ages!" With that she flounced out of the room and spoke over her shoulder at Evanen. "Follow me, we'll use one of the empty classrooms. There's no way you're going to learn to Channel in my room. Hurry up, I haven't got all day!"

Setting off at a brisk pace that she'd never have thought of using if she hadn't got a novice to impress, Deanne headed off towards the classrooms. Reaching them, eventually, she found one that wasn't occupied and, after a brief check, wasn't required for a good while. Pushing the door open she went in and sat on the front desk, indicating that Evanen should take a seat in front of her.

"Right, now I'm going to teach you how to Channel. By the end of this lesson you should be able to embrace the Source and distinguish the different Elements." Deanne began with confidence.  "Now, tell me Child," she continued in her best Aes Sedai voice (she'd been practising) "How much do you know about the Source and about Saidar and Channelling in general?" Deanne waited impatiently for Evanen to tell her what she knew. This lesson was going to be a doddle - if only the stupid child would hurry up! I wasn't this slow! Deanne thought, entirely untruthfully. "Well??" She demanded, after only a few seconds had passed, though to Deanne it felt like hours. "Come on Child! You're never going to reach Accepted at this rate!"

    Deanne Heillan

    Patience? What's that?

  10. Taking a deep breath, Aislyn approached the sack and started to speak in a soothing voice. "You're safe and amongst friends. I'm going to open the sack now and help you out, then we can get you food and something to drink. Ready?"

The sack twitched a little so Aislyn took one last look at the Tracker and nodded her readiness. In one smooth motion she untied the sack, her hands not betraying the nerves she felt. All that showed on her face was concern. Who was in here that required being tied up?? She guessed she was about to find out.

    Aislyn

    Curious and concerned

  11. Deanne yawned widely and stared out of the window at the rain pelting down outside. She was mildly glad that some stupid Aes Sedai hadn't collared her to run errands outside, unfortunately that also meant she had to do a class with her new charge instead. At first Deanne had felt all puffed up with pride and authority when she received the note from Larindhra stating that the bearer was to be her new mentee but, as all good feelings do, they quickly dissipated as she realised she was meant to teach the stupid cow things - on top of her already hectic schedule of learning. Why couldn't they just leave her to her own devices?

Deanne stretched and frowned to herself as she idly examined a hand that had only just recovered from the trip to the kitchens to wash yet another evenings dishes. Honestly, who knew that Carluny Sedai would be so sensitive about her moustache! All Deanne was trying to do was offer advice. Some people had no gratitude.

She drummed her heels against the floor as she waited ever so (im)patiently for Evanen to show up. In her minds eye, Deanne was picturing how the lesson was going to go. The girl would arrive, sit meekly, apologise for taking up so much of Deanne's precious time and then proceed to gasp with wonder and awe at all the weaves Deanne demonstrates. Deanne smiled to herself, it was a wonderful scenario and she had every faith in her teaching abilities. She could just see Evanen following her around everywhere afterwards in a perpetual state of hero-worship.

Yes, this class was going to go superbly well and Larindhra will of course be delighted and maybe even up her grades a little.

    Deanne

    The Worlds Best Teacher

  12. Deanne was grateful that Esther had agreed to go with her, though she definitely did NOT like the sound of all that studying that Esther was promising the Mistress of Novices. Despite that though, Deanne found herself holding her breath whilst Larindhra contemplated their request. She let her breath out with a whoosh when Larindhra slowly consented. She mustered a weak smile and was just about to open her mouth to profess her gratitude, truly she was, when the beastly Mistress of Novices started to order them about, as per usual.

Deanne blushed furiously as Larindhra made several very pointed remarks at her, particularly about the letter. She never would be able to live that down, she still had nightmares about washing the soot off those bedsheets! If she felt that the Mistress of Novice's quarters was the last place she wanted to be in before, that was nothing to how she felt now, with those eyes boring into her. Even with her head bowed in a very real attempt at abashed meekness, Deanne could swear blind she could feel those eyes burning into the top of her skull.

Esther practically snatched the purse of coin - if snatching could be considered respectful, and practically herded Deanne back out of the door as they curtsied and said their "Yes, we understand, Larindhra Sedai". In short order Deanne found herself back in their quarters with Esther bustling about happy as a pig in mud, organising their belongings. Deanne couldn't bring herself to do anything other than shift out of the way as Esther bumbled about muttering lists of books and other bizarre items.

After watching Esther in a half-hearted way, Deanne realised that there was something terribly wrong with Esther's packing. At first, in her befuddled state, she couldn't put her finger on it, but then it dawned on her and eventually she roused herself enough to say something.

"Err...Esther? We are going to take some clothing I hope? I don't know about you but I'm not entirely happy with the thought of having to walk around Cairhien in the altogether!"

  13. Larindhra's sobering words got through to Deanne, cutting straight through the swathes of self pity she'd begun to wrap herself in.  She was being given a chance to save face, to become Aes Sedai but it meant that she would have to give up the child that she was now bearing.

She would never know her child, that was what Larindhra was telling her, and that her child would never know her. Her parents would never get to see the grandchild that they'd always hoped for. But on the other hand she'd be able to become Aes Sedai. Actually BE someone. Not just marry someone with influence, she could actually BE the influence.

Her thoughts strayed guiltily to the trainee in the Warders yard. He would never know his child either, but then if he got kicked out of the Tower too, he could never realise his dream of becoming a Warder like he had mentioned so proudly.

Her hands strayed to her stomach as she thought and then she looked Larindrha in the eye, lifting her chin proudly. "I choose the White Tower. I choose to be Aes Sedai. I will go wherever you send me and study whatever you wish. All that I ask, and I understand that I have no right to make demands right now, if ever, is that you find my baby a good home, a decent place where they will be loved." She paused and sighed then turned to Esther. "Could you come with me too, please?" she reached out and clasped Esther's hand before she realised that Larindhra had the right to send Deanne away on her own.
