Valeri sat at her writing desk, the large ornate timber polished to a deep shine, reading a report sent to her by Aes Sedai on one of her more troublesome Novices. The child sat sullenly in the chair opposite. "Do not sulk child. If you choose to be rude to your teachers then you choose to accept the consequences of your actions."

Farina curled her lip and bit off a retort as she caught a glimpse of Valeri's expression. The child was talented but Light, she was a wild one. "Farina you will go to the kitchens and tell Mistress Laras that you have been rude to an Aes Sedai. You are to spend all of your free time for the next month scrubbing pots and the ovens. Is that understood?"

Farina glared down at her lap and said nothing. "Is that understood child." Valeri repeated.

"Yes Aes Sedai." the child said glumly.

There was a knock at the door and Valeri rose from her seat. She walked around to the door and as she pulled it open she spoke again, "Now Farina, off with you child, and see that you follow my directions and have a care to use some manners with your teachers."

Farina pushed out of the doorway and ran down the hallway, she had almost barrelled over a stocky lass who stood there waiting to see Valeri.

"Come in child, won't you have a seat?" Valeri indicated the seat left vacant by Farina. "My name is Valeri Kinaea, I am the Mistress of Novices here at the White Tower, you may call me Valeri Sedai."

Valeri sat in her own chair and poured them each a cup of tea. She lifted her cup and before she sipped she said, "Now child, what can i do for you?"

Valeri smiled at Sora then rose from her chair and went to the large antique cupboard that stood in the corner, from within it she took a pair of Novice dresses, several shifts, stockings, a belt, a belt pouch, and slippers - all in pristine Novice white.

She glided back to where Sora was seated and set the pile of garments on the desk beside her. As she made her way back to her own seat she said, "These garments are what Novices of the White Tower where. All of your own belongings will be stored away against the day you leave the Tower or are raised to Aes Sedai. When you get to your room you will find a trunk waiting, once you have packed your things away the porters will collect it."

Valeri wove a small thread of fire and warmed the tea pot before pouring each of them another cup of tea, "You may keep a few small trinkets or mementos, but they must stay in your room and may not be items of clothing."

Sora nodded her understanding as she sipped at her tea. "Now Sora. About your mother. I'm not sure you understand how unusual it is for an Aes Sedai to have a child. The Greens would usually arrange for such a child to be raised without the knowledge. You are something of a rarity i'm afraid. You must not speak of your mother to anyone until i give you leave to do so."

Valeri softened her tone, this next would probably prove painful to Sora, "And child, i need you to give me your mother's Great Serpent ring." Sora started to object but Valeri hushed her gently, "Sora, i cannot allow a Novice in the White Tower to be in possession of a Great Serpent ring, I will keep it safe against the day you are raised to Accepted. Then you can have your mother's ring as your own."

'r“I would like to learn Valeri Sedai. I would like to learn to be an Aes Sedai. And if I’m not wrong you knew my mother, or at least, of my mother. Would you please tell me about her?”

Valeri reached into the bottom drawer of her desk and lifted out the aged leather-bound Novice Book. The Keeping weave placed on the book ensured that it did not become damaged with time but Valeri still treated the document with a great deal of respect. "This Sora, is the Novice Book. Within it's pages are the records of every Novice the White Tower has ever held. I remember your mother." Valeri flipped through the pages until she found Anilinen's entry.

Valeri turned the book to show Sora her mother's Novice entry in the Novice Book. It was at the top of the page...

"We need to speak about your mother child,"Valeri said gently, "but now is not the time or place. I would ask you to keep the identities of your parents quiet. Do not tell anyone until i have had a chance to discuss the issues with the Green Ajah child. Do you understand Sora?"

Glumly Sora nodded. Valeri turned the pages of the Novcie Book to the most recent pages and said "Sora, can you tell me you full name, place of birth and current age please."

As Sora spoke Valeri wrote the details into the Novice Book. Once done she set her pen down and smiled at Sora. "Welcome to Tar Valon, Sora Mantolias. Welcome to the White Tower Novice Sora."

LOLz Rashi - we can fudge that a little as it's a retro - and it can be done in the Novices and Accepted Quarters

What OC is looking for here is purely character development.

Sora grew up knowing she was the daughter of a Green Aes Sedai and her Warder/husband, but no one at the WT knows they are dead or that they had a daughter.

So Valeri has just had this girl show up to become a Novice - wearing a Great Serpent ring on a necklace.

We were thinking it would be good to have a Green be involved in a thread that delves into Sora's mother's history and notifies the Green's of the loss to the Ajah.

I'm ready when you are to get started. Have a read through some of the other Intro RP threads in the Novice and Accepted Quarters if you want some ideas on what other have done, or just go ahead and write up an RP.

Sora sipped her tea from the seafolk porcelain cup, the pale blue setting she used today had been a gift from one of the first Sisters she had seen raised through from Novice to Aes Sedai. The child held the cup in her hands, appearing to take comfort from the warmth exuding from it, “I was raised by my uncle in Arad Doman on his estates. He is a horse trader and breeder.”

Valeri leaned forward, straining to hear the soft spoken lass' words, "Please speak up child." she said gently with a smile.

Sora sipped her tea again and cleared her throat, “My aunt died when I was five so it was just me and my cousins. I read a lot and learned to play stones with my uncle. I used to lose all the time until I got older and then I managed to win two out of three games," Sora smiled, and Valeri could see that she had a great deal of love and respect for her Uncle, “He taught me how to ride and about his trade. I guess he assumed I would stay and continue to live out my life there. When I was old enough I decided that I wanted to come to the White Tower and become Aes Sedai.”

Sora went on to explain the significance of her locket and the rings, the first two were the wedding rings of her parents, but it was the Great Serpent ring that Valeri was interested in. "My mother Anilinen Mantolias was of the Green Ajah."

Valeri blinked in surprise, "You’re not going to take it away are you?" the girl said in a slightly panicked voice.

"Your mother, was Anilinen Mantolias?" the lass nodded, "And she was killed by darkfriends while returning to the Tower to give birth?" again Sora nodded.

Valeri sat back in her chair. No one had seen Anilinen in a long time, and it was common knowledge that she had married her Warder, but a baby?! It was possible Valeri supposed, as rare as it was, occasionally Sisters did have children. The child knew the names, and Valeri knew that Anilinen had had kin in Arad Doman. A baby? Valeri looked closer at the child, and memories of the child's mother as a Novice and Accepted flooded her mind. The girl did have her features...

Valeri composed herself. "We shall talk more of your parents later child but for now we must see if you have the ability to learn to channel."

Valeri opened the top drawer in mer desk and from it withdrew and polished blue gem. Valeri rose from her chair and moved around and knelt by Sora's side. "Look into the gem girl," she murmured, "focus all your thoughts and energy on the gem, think of nothing else."

In a remarkably short amount of time the gem flashed, just for a second and went dull again. Valeri closed her fingers around the gem and stood. Patting Sora's shoulder gently Valeri then returned to her seat. "Congratulations Sora, you can learn to channel."

The child took a few hesitant steps into the study. The blonde lass drew herself up and bowed - she bowed! And said "I am Sora Mantolias, Valeri Sedai it is a pleasure to meet you."

Valeri motioned for Sora to sit in the chair opposite her desk, it was a straight backed ornate chair with a cushion placed on it for comfort - though it could be removed if necessary. Sora sat and still wide eyed, she plucked nervously at her dress, the bow had proved to Valeri that the child was not used to wearing dresses. Shyly Sora tried to meet Valeri's eyes and succeeded in only blushing furiously. "I'm unsure where to begin or what to say Valeri Sedai. The only thing right now I know for certain is that I travelled all this way to become Aes Sedai."

"Well child," Valeri began, "we will see to testing you shortly. To start though why don't you tell me about yourself, and where you got that most unusual necklace from. Would you like some tea?"

Valeri pushed the fine porcelain teacup across the desk to Sora and then lifted her own cup to her lips and waited.

In addition to Elgee's post above - ALL Novice and Accepted posts now take place in the newly created Novice and Accepted Quarters board with the White Tower RP board. This is so we can keep Main Timeline threads from getting lost amongst the retro threads :)

Valeri had just entered her study and made tea when there came a knock at the door. This would be the latest in a string of girls coming to be tested, Sora. Valeri had replied by messenger to the polite note the child had sent the previous evening. "Come in." she said as she poured two cups of tea, the heady Saldaean blend made her smile as she thought of her homeland.

The door was pushed open and a slight girl stepped through the door. The child was tiny! Clad in a white dress with green embroidery, her blonde hair was neatly braided and tied with a ribbon. The child's eyes widened as she looked around the room and took in Valeri herself. Valeri walked back to her large ornate timber desk and set the fine seafolk porcelain cups on the desk top.

As the child turned to face her a glint of gold at the child's neck caught Valeri's eye, a gold chain supported a large locket and three rings were hanging beneath it. Valeri moved to sit, but something about those rings drew her eyes back - one of them was a Great Serpent ring, now where under the light had the child got that from?

"Come in child, I am Valeri Kinaea, the Mistress of Novices, you may call me Valeri Sedai."

...you had to explain to friends and family why getting an Aes Sedai shawl for your birthday was THE best gift ever!!

The most annoying thing for me is the change of pronunciation of names between volumes in the series. One that springs to mind is Tanchico, another is Manetheren

Some have you will have noticed the new board within the existing White RP IC board. The Novice and Accepted Quarters will be used for all retro threads made by Novices and Accepted.

This means, that because N&As RP in retro so that they are raised and aged in the Main timeline, ALL threads made by Novice and Accepted characters must be made in the Novice and Accepted Quarters.

Over the next few days i will begin moving threads over to that board - please be sure to check your req links still work and update them if necessary after the threads have been moved.

The classes for Novices and Accepted will continue to be held in the White Tower Classroom.

It is understood that retro threads are sometimes done by Aes Sedai characters for varying reasons. These posts remain on the main White Tower board- but we would ask that you put [RETRO] somewhere in the title or topic description. This will allow more clarification for visiting members of other guilds, as most do not RP in retro as we often do, and it can be confusing for those looking for Main Timeline threads.

If you are not sure about anything here, or where a thread should go please don't hesitate to ask.

Amadine's in the market for a Warder - not that she would tell you that, she thinks she will never one, but i created her and i have other ideas LOL

Ama's a Yellow, so the emotionally damaged thing would appeal to her yellow nature. Plus she's a bit damaged herself, during her testing for Accepted she abandoned her dying Warder in order to return through the Archway - it scarred her for life - she still has nightmares about it some 70+ years later. The scene was relived again during her testing for the shawl and she swore she'd never take a Warder. She's not very strong in the OP but she is very skilled in Healing.

Valeri smiled as she watched Mylane's varied emotions play out across her face. It was one of the things she enjoyed most about working with the Novices.

"A Sister's name followed by Sedai is the correct form of address. If you should ever see the Amyrlin Seat you should address her as Mother."

“What will I be allowed to study? Or read? Does it matter that I’m not that good with my numbers?”

"It's lovely to see you are keen to learn Mylane. Once you have settled in your skills will be assessed and your education will begin. Some girls come to the Tower unable to read and write, others have had a noble education. We are used to have Novices of every skill level and so your current levels are not important, your lessons will be tailored to your needs." Valeri explained.

Mylane was gazing around the room, she appeared to be taking in every minute detail. Her eyes fell on the pile of Novice Whites beside the Novice Book, “Are those for me?”

Valeri nodded and pushed the pile of white garments across the desk, "Yes child. All Novices wear only white, it symbolises that they are beginning their journey. You will be given everything you need. When you get to your room will find a trunk there, pack into it your old belongings and the porters will take it to be stored against the day when you need them again. You may keep a few things if you wish, like keepsakes or hairbrushes, but the only clothing you may wear will be Novice White."

Valeri fished a small wooden token engraved with her own name from a jar on her desk and passed it to Mylane. "If you take this token to the Tower seamstresses they will measure you and make a set of garments to fit you. These here will serve you for now, but are unlikely to fit you well."

Valeri lifted the small brass bell on her desk and rang it, it was a soft chime which would not have been heard outside of the study except that Valeri had warded it to ring in the ear of the closest Novice or Accepted to her study, and they all knew that it meant that the Mistress of Novices required them to attend her immediately.

"Someone will be along shortly to escort you to your room and show you around the Tower, do you have any more questions before she arrives?"

Valeri could see Mylane's anxiety levels risings, admirably she tried to control it, but the banks burst and all the while holding Valeri's gaze, the words bubbled forth, "Will I be trained or was Alina Sedai wrong about me being able to learn to channel? What if I mess up? I can learn fast and I know how to read and write. I'll work for my keep if I have to.... Please, don't make me go! I want to stay and learn. I'm not to old and I know I can be of some use! Please let me stay... Please, Valeri Sedai, I don't want to go."

"Shhh now Mylane," Valeri said gently, "No one is going to send you away. If Alina Sedai tested you and says you can learn to channel, then learn to channel you can. The White Tower will not turn you away."

Standing Valeri went to the large ornate wardrobe in the corner of her office and took from it the shifts, dresses and other requirements that Mylane would need for her years as a Novice, including several pristine white handkerchiefs. Valeri set the bundle on the corner of her desk and passed a handkerchief to Mylane, "Here child, now dry your eyes and we will see about entering your name in the Novice Book."

Valeri opened the Novice book to the most recent pages and took up her pen, "Now child, can you please give me your full name, place of birth and your current age."

As Mylane spoke Valeri carefully penned the details into the Novice Book, she finished the entry with her own signature and the date. Setting the pen back down she looked up at Mylane, smiled, then spoke the words that would bind her to the Tower forever, "Welcome to Tar Valon Mylane Dadric. Welcome to the White Tower Novice Mylane."

Valeri listened as Mylane spun out her journey to the White Tower. She refilled Mylane's teacup as the lass spoke of Alina Sedai and her warders pushing Mylane hard during the ride to Tar Valon.

When she finished speaking Mylane looked down at her teacup, but Valeri could see the inquisitive eyes of the child studying her from beneath dark lashes. She looked up again and spoke softly, "Valeri Sedai, may I ask a question?"

Valeri smiled, "Of course child, i will answer any questions you might have that i am able to."

As she waiting for Mylane to ask, Valeri reached down to lift the Novice Book from the lowest drawer of her desk. She set it in front of her and folder her hands over the large book as Mylane began to speak.

Aldwyn spent the night creeping about the town, speaking to those he knew and listening to the conversations of those he did not. He learned that Eltar had been taken, Akairril had escaped and Saezar had been killed.

Aldwyn found Akairril passed out drunk in a tavern run by a trusted friend of Eltar's - which meant that he was dishonest as the day was long. Truly Saezar and Akairril had been friends for many years and Aldwyn did not begrudge the man time to mourn, but they needed to work up a plan to free Eltar. Aldwyn left instructions with the tavern keeper to wake Akairril - with a bucket of water if necessary - no later than an hour after dawn and send him to the Scarlet Fan Inn. It was not where Aldwyn would be of course, the tavern keeper could not be trusted not to sell Aldwyn out, but Akairril would have to pass by Mistress Allaren's on his way and Aldwyn would be watching for him.

Ellery's recovery under the ministrations of Mistress Allaren was nothing short of miraculous, but what would Aldwyn know of that? All he knew what that when he returned to the kitchen after dawn the following morning Ellery was sitting at the Healer's table eating a hearty breakfast. Mistress Allaren set out another plate and Aldwyn grinned at the small thief, then sat down to eat his own meal.

"They caught Eltar, Ellery" Aldwyn said when they finished their meal. "That big Captain of the Guard dragged him off i think, i didn't see what happened, but there's talk of Eltar being in the cells under the main Guard's gate and that he'll be hanged."

Ellery looked up sharply before Aldwyn continued, "Akairril should be along soon and we can decide what we want to do. Come on Ellery, we'll wait in the the stable, Mistress Allaren will have customers coming along soon and she'll not like to be seen with the likes of us." Aldwyn grinned at Mistress Allaren and she rolled her eyes then smiled fondly at him.

Once the the stable Aldwyn found a place in the wall facing the street with a gap large enough to keep watch for Akairril, while Ellery sat on an upturned bucket her face thoughtful.

Amadine sighed with frustration, she'd been in the stable long enough for her horse to be saddled and bought out for her and still none of the other sisters had arrived. Infuriating. Several minutes later Seheria strode into the stables. Seheria may have been Amadine's Ajah sister, but there was no love lost between them.

Ama knew she was weak in the One Power, yet she was skilled in Healing, more so than some others, and some others despised that fact. Amadine did not know if Seheria was within that group, but she knew Seheria was quick assert herself in situations where she was clearly the stronger sister, and truly, Amadine did not blame her, it was the way of the Tower. Ama just hoped that Seheria would respect the position Camigwen had appointed her to.

Seheria smiled awkardly at Ama as she ordered her horse saddled, soon after Carys arrived and then the others trickled in. Once the five sisters were saddled, some comfortably, some not so much, Amadine mounted Cuebiyar and led the small procession from the stable and towards the Eastern Gate. Glancing behind her Ama saw Carys approach as if to ride alongside, but was cut off by Seheria. It was going to be a long ride.

Throughout the day Amadine monitored the condition of the sister's who were know not to ride often. She would not push them hard today, if she pushed slowly, those sister's would improve each day with their skills and stamina in the saddle enabling them to move further each day. When they made camp Ama ensured that those who needed it were offered Healing discreetly, and they turned in with the sun.
