Talina stalked through the halls of the White Tower heading for the dining hall. She was still adjusting to this foolishness that Larindhra had thrust upon her. Mistress of Novices indeed! Oh yes, the call had come from the Hall and been ratified by the Ayrmlin Seat, but Talina knew that Larindhra and her scheming ways was behind it.

As Talina entered the dining hall she saw a smattering of other sisters clustered around other tables. Many of the Aes Sedai in the Tower preferred to take their meals within their rooms. Having Novices or serving women deliver their meals on trays, but Talina preferred her meals to be hot and fresh from the kitchen, so she more often than not, took her meals in the dining hall.

Spying Larindhra at the corner table that she favoured on her rare visits here, despite their constant griping at one another, Talina and Larindhra were both amongst the oldest living Aes Sedai and had know each other as Novices. This long association had led to a complex friendship over the years. Talina changed course and approached her fellow Red, without asking or invitation she sat. "Good Evening Larindhra, what brings you to the Dining Hall this night?"

Nyanna's eyes widened and for a moment she looked terrified, her voice came out in a tiny whisper, “I...I don’t ever want to hurt anyone again, Aes Sedai,ever. P-please help me control this...channelling.”

Valeri's face remained serene, and the child appeared to focus on her for a moment and then she began to visibly calm herself. After a few moments she spoke again, “I’m sorry, Valeri Sedai. My name is Nyanna al’Dyn. I’d like to stay, I really do - I want to learn to control my power. I don’t want to be a danger any more.”

*Light!* Valeri thought to herself, though her face maintained it's Aes Sedai calmness, *what has this child been through?*

Valeri wondered over what could have frightened the child so badly, to make her feel she was a danger, but she also sensed that that was a conversation for another day, another time. She would be overwhelmed enough this day already.

Nodding Valeri spoke, "Your place here is assured child. The Tower aims to teach control, as such there will be many rules you must follow. The most important however is that you must never channel Saidar without permission and supervision. Can you abide by that rule and the others we set for you Nyanna?"

Valeri reached down to the bottom drawer where the Novice Book was stored and opened it to the page containing the latest entries. "I will need you to tell me your full name, place of birth and current age."

As the child spoke Valeri recorded the details in the prescribed columns, sealing Nyanna's fate to the Tower. Valeri set down her pen and smiled warmly at the wild lass seated before her, "Welcome to Tar Valon, Nyanna al'Dyn. Welcome to the White Tower, Novice Nyanna."

Valeri took the ring the Sora had so carefully examined before passing it to her. "It will be fine Sora, i will care for it as if it were my own. I promise you."

Valeri set the ring onto a fresh piece of parchment and carefully folded into into a pouch, she sealed the pouch with wax, then took up her pen and with her neat hand she wrote Sora Mantolias upon the pouch. She then locked it in her draw. "And there it shall remain until you are raised Accepted."

Sora stood and bowed to Valeri. "I thank you child, but you will have to learn to curtsey once you are in Novice White. I will have one of the other girls show you." Valeri smiled and lifted the small brass bell from her desk. it rang quietly but within minutes there was a tap at the door. "Come in child." Valeri called.

The door pushed open to reveal a Novice. "Ah Sora, this is Travia. She will show you to your new room, and show you the areas of the Tower you need to know about."

Sora nodded and bowed again before lifting the bundle of Novice Whites to her chest. "And Travia, please show Sora how to curtsey. You may go now. Sora, just remember my door is always open to you, no matter what you need."

Travia closed the door behind them and Valeri sat back in her chair, closing her eyes and enjoying the summer breeze that came through the open window.

Dora's tale spun out, "Well, uhm, I am Dora Farlee, daughter of a tavernmaster. I worked for my father as a cook before Gania Sedai tested me. Its no long story Valeri Sedai. I am just a commoner like everyone else. And as for the journey, I got here by ship from Aringill, as Gania Sedai instructed. She made the test, the game with the gems? She said I could become a novice and an Aes Sedai, if I can. I want to be an Aes Sedai Valeri Sedai."

Daughter of a tavernmaster, well, that explained a lot. Valeri nodded. "Yes you have the ability to channel Dora, but there is a long road of learning to become an Aes Sedai. First you become a Novice, then an Accepted and then when you are judged ready an Aes Sedai. Many come without the determination required to see it through. If you have the determination then i have no doubt that you can become an Aes Sedai someday."

Valeri reached in the desk drawer and lifted out the aged leather-bound tome that was the Novice Book. "This is the Book of Novices Dora. Once your name is entered here you are sealed to the Tower, until we deem that you are ready to leave. A Novice must study hard, work diligently and follow directions without delay. There are many rules for a Novice's own safety. Are you prepared to follow those rules Dora? If you are, we can add your name to the Book and you can begin your new life today."

“She has picked on me since my first day in the tower aes sedai. Today was the first time she has pushed me that far. She smacked me in the bottom with a switch of air and when she did it startled the horse. Between the constant verbal and mental abuse this was just the last straw. I just knew that I wanted her to stop and this weave seemed right somehow. I was concerned for mine and the horses safety at that point so I just went with it. As soon as I threw the weave at her I knew what I had done and at the time I knew if I pulled it away she would do worse to me. That is where you came in. I know I am in trouble and I know I shouldn’t have done what I did. I just lost my temper. And I also know I could have hurt her and hurt myself but at that time to be honest I didn’t care I had just had enough.”

By the time the child had finished speaking she had tears rolling down her cheeks, which she scrubbed at with her fists. Amadine nodded thoughtfully. "Child, while i understand that you have been bullied, you must never ever use the One Power in such a way without supervision. What you did is called a Shield, and used incorrectly it can be exceptionally dangerous."

Amadine fished a handkerchief from within her basket and handed it to the Novice. "Now, you will have to see Valeri Sedai about this infraction, but it would not do for you to encounter those girls again on your own this afternoon. You will accompany me to stablehouses and then i will see you safely to the Mistress of Novices." Amadine ushered the girl out of the stable and down the main path beside the stable yard. She passed her basket to the child in white, "Carry this for me please child. And tell me your name, i cannot be addressing you as Child all afternoon."

They reached the home of the Gwendrey's and Amadine knocked upon the door. The door opened revealed Mistress Gwendry, clutching a feverish child. "Oh Amadine Sedai! She is so ill, please won't you do something for her."

"Of course Mistress Gwendry." Ama soothed. "Sora find me the packet in my basket marked Feverbane please, and go fetch a cup of water. In the basket there is a measuring scoop, mix one scoop of Feverbane into the water and bring it to me."

Amadine embraced Saidar and delved little Flora, the infection had taken hold within the circulation system this time. Poor little sickly mite Ama thought as she wove a basic Healing weave and laid it on the child. The child's body relaxed and she whimpered, "There there lass, you will feel better now." Taking the cup from Sora, Ama held the child's head and gave her a sip from it. Passing the cup to Mistress Gwendry she said "Now give her a sip every five to ten minutes until the cup is empty. Then let her sleep. When she wakes she will be hungry so be sure to have something ready for her."

Mistress Gwendry offered profuse thanks as Amadine and Sora made their way out to the path again. "Sora, do you have questions for me while we walk?"

The child who entered Valeri's study was... there was no other way to put it gently, a mess. Her hair was matted to the skull, with bits of twigs and leaves still caught in her damp hair. She was wearing a clean dress though, so someone had made a minor effort.

The child stuttered through accepting Valeri's offer of tea but managed to speak clearly, if very quietly, about her journey to Tar Valon, “Makandra Sedai, the Aes Sedai who brought me here…she tested me, and she confirmed, that I…I have the spark inborn, Valeri Sedai. She found me in a village, in the inn she was staying. Mistress Alkan, the cook, had been giving food to me. I lived in the forest before that, for some time…”

Valeri gently pushed a cup tea across the desk to the lass, making her movements slow and deliberate. This was not the first wild lass Valeri had had to contend with and it was best to treat them as one would a skittish animal. Valeri would have words with Makandra for leaving the lass with an inexperienced Accepted. She nodded in response to the child's words, "Would you tell me your name lass? And yes, child, you can channel, that much is certain. That's why you are here. We will teach you to channel safely. Those who begin channelling on their own are at risk of inadvertently hurting themselves or others."

As Amadine waited for an answer from the Novice, the Accepted whom had been the apparent victim in the situation began babbling, pointing a finger at the Novice, “Amadine Sedai, this Novice attacked me with no cause. As I came into the stables she immediately through weaves of air and then she shielded me and started babbling incoherently.”

Amadine raised an eyebrow and addressed the Accepted. "I did not ask you Accepted. You will be silent until i ask you to speak." Turning her focus to the Novice Amadine spoke gently, "Is that true child?"

The Novice spoke very quietly, “Not exactly Aes Sedai.” She then proceeded to explain that the older girls had been picking on her for some time and had followed her to the stable.

"Amadine Sedai! That's not..." the Accepted began.

"I said be silent Accepted." Amadine replied firmly. The girl stood with her eyes downcast and a sullen look on her face.

"So child," Ama continued, "This Accepted was taunting you and you embraced Saidar and threw a weave of Spirit at her, but you did not know what you had done?" The child nodded.

Turning Amadine spoke firmly to the Accepted and her two companions, "You will go directly to Valeri Sedai this instant, and explain that i found you harassing a Novice, taking advantage of your position and using channelling to taunt one who is not allowed to defend herself in the same way. I will be seeing Valeri Sedai in an hour and you had best have been there before me. Now go."

The Accepted picked up their skirts and ran from the stable. Amadine turned to the Novice. "Now child, i'd like the full story of what happened from the time you embraced Saidar, until when i entered the stables."

Standing in the mouth of the sewer with a section of "Guardsmen" Aldwyn looked around. The true Guardsmen were tied wearing only their small-clothes back within the sewer, they had been so intent on waiting for the signal from their Captain that they had not heard the company of thieves approach from within the bowels of the sewer. Silently they had taken out each of the nine Guardsmen one at a time. The poor fools had no even realised what was happening until it was too late. Donning their uniforms, Aldwyn and the others waited.

Aldwyn watched, as Eltar attacked the executioner and realised that it was Akairril. The pair of thieves fought side by side and just the came the call Aldwyn and his fellows were waiting on, "NOW!"

Aldwyn and the thieves dressed at Guardsmen barrelled out of the sewer and toward Eltar, surrounding him them fought off the other Guardsmen. Aldwyn took a long cut to the arm from a short sword as he had stabbed his knife into the neck of a Guardsman. The confusion caused by seeing members of the Guard apparently attacking their own created an opening which Eltar and Aldwyn took advantage of, escaping down an alley and to the twisting alleys of the city.

Later that day Aldwyn and Eltar were sitting in the back of a dingy tavern in the foregate when the news came that Akairril had been killed, along with several of the others. It was time for Eltar to go to ground for a few months. The Captain was not going to forget about his Guardsmen being impersonated anytime soon and with that thought in mind, Aldwyn and Eltar left Cairhein, and headed for Shienar. They spent two months in Fal Dara before beginning to make enquiries in regards to their status back in Cairhein.

Amadine catches some Novices and Accepted channelling unsupervised....

Amadine pulled her shawl closer about her shoulders, the breeze rushing through the gardens was cool today. She carried her basket of herbs in one hand, and she was heading for the stablehouses. She had received a note this morning in the infirmary that little Flora Gwendry, daughter of one of the Stablemasters, had taken ill and was too sick to be moved from her bed.

As she passed by the stable door Ama felt channelling. Frowning, she stepped to the door and was dismayed to find that within the stable was a Novice holding a shield on an Accepted.

Amadine formed her own shield and pressed it between the Novice and the Source, Ama was not strong in the Power, but the girl was untrained yet. The Novice wheeled around as she was cut off from the source and Amadine frowned at the group of girls as she said, "Now what in the Light is going on here?"

She pointed at the child in Novice White, "You. Explain yourself, this instant."

Once the pair reached the Tower, Valeri lead the way to her study. Dora was trailing along behind her. This was to be an interesting journey for this lass. The child was toting a bottle of brandy in her bag and had been smoking a pipe most of the way to the Tower.

"Come in Dora, you may sit there." Valeri indicated the chair positioned before her large ornate desk. Valeri went to the tea stand under the window and filled the teapot with fresh water from the pitcher, she added a large spoonful of her favourite Saldaean blend of tea, then channelled a small thread of fire to heat the teapot. Taking the teapot in one hand and scooping up a pair of teacups in the other Valeri went back to her desk and sat down in her own chair.

"Would you like tea Dora?" Without waiting for a response Valeri filled both cups and pushed one over in front of the lass. Lifting her own teacup she said, "Now Dora, why don't you tell me about yourself and how you came to journey to the White Tower?"

Valeri sat at her desk, penning reports on the progress of her charges for the Amrylin Seat. Her teacup sat steaming on her desk and Valeri smiled as she inhaled the fragrant scent of her favourite Saldaean blend of tea. As she set down her pen and lifted the fine Seafolk porcelain teacup to her lips there was a knock at the door.

"Come in."

The door pushed open into her study. Standing on the threshold was Talaye and another girl. A young girl. Valeri smiled at the pair, "Thank you Talaye, you may go." Talaye bobbed a curtsey and inclined her head, "Thank you Valeri Sedai." and with that the girl disappear down the corridor.

"Come in child," Valeri said gently to the lass still standing in the doorway, "You may sit there" Valeri indicated the chair opposite her own.

The girl made her way to the chair and sat, Valeri embraced Saidar and using Air pushed the door gently closed. "Would you like some tea? My name is Valeri Kinaea, I am the Mistress of Novices here at the White Tower. You may call me Valeri Sedai. Would you like to tell me what brings you to the Tower?"

Must just be similar to another name i've seen Elgs - i can't find anything either.

Has she still got her bio? I'll say that the name seems vaguely familiar?? I will have a look about and see why that is...

Valeri stood at the docks, pulling her shawl closer about her shoulders to hold back the breeze. It wasn't so much as cold as it was a bit fresh. With some restraint Valeri waited, without tapping her foot, while the deck crew of The Red Mahogany readied the ship for disembarkation.

Several other passengers appeared and made their way up the gangway and headed off into the city. Frowning Valeri began to think about asking the shipmaster where her newest charge was. Farila had been quite adament in her letter that Valeri meet the child as she got off the ship. A "bit of a free spirit and scattered" had been Farila's exact wording.

Just as Valeri lifted her hand to beckon the shipmaster she spied a young girl in her middle teenage years heading towards the gangway, her eyes lowered, one hand clutching a bottle, the other holding a lit pipe and a travel bag. She reached the gangway and stopped, looking up at Valeri the child dropped her bag at her feet. Was that, no it couldn't be, but yes, it was. A bottle brandy in that child's hand! .

"Dora Farlee?" Valeri asked, though the question was not necessary, Farila had been quite specific in her letters.

The child appeared to be quite transfixed, studying Valeri with narrowed eyes, "Dora?" Valeri said a bit louder.

"Come again?" the child replied. Instantly Valeri raised an eyebrow as she took in the would-be-Novice. This one had some lessons in speaking to Aes Sedai to learn apparently.

Dora straightened under Valeri's cool gaze, and she lifted her chin and looked at Valeri, quite self composed.

"Welcome to Tar Valon Dora. I am Valeri Kinaea, the Mistress of Novices. I have come to escort you to the White Tower, won't you come this way please."

Valeri waited for Dora to lift her bag and began walking back towards the city along the docks as the child trailed after her.

The child moved passed Valeri and took the indicated seat before Valeri's desk. Valeri closed the door and moved to sit in her own chair. The girl seated before her was fiddling with an envelope, passing it back and for between her hands.

"Malinta Sedai said I was to bring this to you, Valeri Sedai, She tested me, ma'am, several years ago. When... When she came to gentle my brother."

Valeri's expression softened and she poured them each a cup of her favourite Saldaean blend of tea. She pushed one of the fine Seafolk porcelain teacups across the desktop to the lass seated before her. "That must have been a difficult time for you child. Is that perhaps a letter for me that you have there?"

Once Akairril arrived the trio set out. As they approached the main guard gate the three of them ducked into a side alley. Aldwyn could see that there was only 4 guards on duty, but there were sure to be more inside the building.

"Wait here." Aldwyn told Ellery and Akairril then he walked out into the square. Aldwyn strolled across the square, he stopped to look at the market stands several times, so as to appear to be casually shopping. The guards stood at the gate casually joking and laughing with each other, they didn't appear to be very observant. That meant the Captain of the Guard was elsewhere at the moment, a good sign. Aldwyn made his way around the square and then ducked into the alley beside the main guardhouse. Along the edge of the building there were barred openings in the brickwork. The cells.

Keeping his voice to a low whisper Aldwyn said, "Eltar! Where are you?" All he could do was hope that Eltar was in one of the cells on this side of the building, the other side would be more difficult being that it was a busy street.
