TV Show Concept Art Revealed

  • New concept art from the Amazon Prime Wheel of Time television show was released today.

Today, @WoTonPrime—the official Twitter handle for the Amazon Prime’s Wheel of Time television show—shared a short video and snippets of concept art. The short video featured Rafe Judkins, the showrunner for the Wheel of Time show, emphasizing the themes in The Eye of the World: “of balance, of gender, and the emotional journey of these characters.” While Judkins talks, several images of concept art flash behind him. Let’s take a closer look!

So what can we glean from these images?  Fans are already speculating.  Here's my take.

The first image must be Rand and Mat.  Ginger hair on Rand.  Mat has a quarterstaff.  But which river are they looking at?  Thom's not there, and if Thom is not there it has to be after Whitebridge.  And if we're deviating from the novel entirely, perhaps this could be the place Rand and Mat glimpse the Tower of Ghenjei.

Image number two: Winternight in the Two Rivers.  Rafe Judkins already let us know we will get to see the Bel Tine celebration, so perhaps Rand and Tam don't return to their farm that night.

The third seems a tame version of the Tuatha'an camp.  It fits the description of the wagons, but the colors are all wrong!

My first thought on the fourth image was it featured the Two River's folks on the other side of the Taren River.  I seem to recall they hid in some dense trees that first night.  However, the number count is off.  Lan and Moiraine at the front.  Rand, Mat, Perrin.  Egwene.  One more rider makes Nynaeve a member of this group.  The only time they all rode together--in The Eye of the World, at least--was traveling to and from the Waygates stationed in Caemlyn and Fal Dara.  The forest could be on the Shienar side of the Waygate.

And finally, the one that actually gave me chills: Shadar Logoth.  The dark atmosphere, the looming buildings, the lurking fog.  This is amazing!

Sometimes it seems the new information isn't coming fast enough.  Other times, we see amazing glimpses into the making of this show and the anticipation it stirs inside will last for several days.  The more we see, the more real it becomes.

Wasn't Thom with the Two Rivers folk when they crossed the Taran? I didn't think of Shadar Logoth! I like it!

Yes, you are correct!  Thom was with them.  Looking at the picture, it doesn’t appear to be Thom, but concept art doesn’t need to be detailed exactly!  So this could be on their way to Baerlon.

Even if it isn't detailed, it's still really cool art. I imagined the Taran to be a lot bigger than that, but maybe I'm just crazy? Good interpretations!

Picture 4: First I thought the red-coat figure with long hair is Egwene. Then I realized the horse she/he's riding doesn't look like our dearest shaggy mare, Bela. But wait...why so "meticulous" with concept art ??? These pics are magnificient and that's all we need!

This is exciting. I read an article that said the LoTR show wasn't going to pick up production again until February -- so it would likely be end of 2021 or 2022 before it would be released. I hope WoT comes out this year! Does anybody have an educated guess on a month it might be released? Summer? June? I would get all my holed-up friends to watch!

Last picture has got to be Shadar Logoth, and it's perfect! Love it. Eerie.

Really like the Bel-Tine picture too. And I imagine the Tinkers camp being bigger, but I'm not going to nit-pick!

The second to last picture ... I see a lone Tower in the middle of the trees ... Tar Valon?? But that stone on the one side of the bridge makes me lean towards it being the world on the other side of a Way-Gate. I dunno.

What do you think @Elder_Haman ??

There is a tower!  How strange!  Doesn’t look grand enough for the White Tower, but concept art.

Maybe their on their way to the blight and those could be one of the guard posts that line the border?  The decay of the forest and trees wouldn’t be seen until past the border.

Or if we’re going to deviate enough, that could be one of the seven towers of Malkier!

Hmmm...

Let's start with the concept art. The concepts all look amazing. (Though, just fair warning, Rafe popped into The Dusty Wheel's livestream and said that these were early concept drawings and some have changed substantially.)

Emond's Field looks amazing - just like I pictured it. What we believe to be Shadar Logoth looks spectacularly creepy - though I always thought it would be a little more ruined than it appears in the drawing. [I'm also hesitant to say 100% that it is Shadar Logoth - it could be one of Rand's Ba'alzamon dreams - specifically the one where he heads to the White Tower].

I thought there would be more Tinkers too - but I also feel like they might have many different wagon circles that correspond to family units. So we may not be getting the entire picture.

I have a different take on the one with the group of riders. I think that's the Emond's fielders, Lan and Moiraine and that the tower is Shadar Logoth. I think the stone is not a portal stone, but just a common road marker.

As for a release - I'm sticking with my prediction for sometime between late April and early June. I think we will get a Super Bowl trailer. Everyone associated with the production keeps talking about how stunning WoT is visually. Rafe has mentioned how awesome the channeling looks. Multiple cast members have gushed over the visuals. If they really have something that's going to blow people away visually, they will want to showcase that on the biggest possible stage - not wait for San Diego ComiCon or some other smaller venue.

Amazon's typical pattern is to premier a series somewhere between a month and two months after the trailer is released.

For perspective:

"The Boys" -- first trailer: June 17, 2019. Season One release: July 26, 2019.

"Carnival Row" -- first trailer: August 6, 2019. Season One release: August 30, 2019.

"Bosch" -- first trailer: January 14, 2015. Season One release: February 13, 2015.

That type of schedule would fit with a Super Bowl trailer and the notion that they will shoot pickups for the last 2 episodes when filming resumes in April.

A Superbowl trailer would be awesome! I hope you're right. I know they had a lot of money in WoT but that's 5million+ for one ad...

True. But Prime did Super Bowl trailers for Hanna and Jack Ryan in the past. So it’s not unprecedented

I just have a hard time imagining that they would pass up the opportunity to show off their shiny new toy to as many people as possible.

I LOVE the concept art. It strikes the perfect balance between drab like GOT and technicolor. Gives me great hope on the art direction backed up also by the sword and guitar though the Whitecloak uninforms that were leaked just look lame.

I really don't like the artstyle they've gone with, why does everything always have to be so overcast, dark, and drab, since game of thrones, netflix did it with the witcher and it seems amazon is doing it with wheel of time, just because game of thrones did it, doesn't mean everyone has to do it, I do like shadar logoth though, thats the place you should have a dark atmosphere, though I kind of wish they went with gothic architecture, it is a really old city after all
