Selling the prologue early?

are people seriously arguing that this is not a ploy because they are ok with it and/or tor isn't LITERALLY trying to get every dollar? Neither of those reasons preclude it from being a ploy. in fact that line of reasoning only shows that the ploy is working. we all either fall for business/marketing ploys or choose them all the time, but that does not stop something from being a ploy

I actually work in Marketing for a major US apparel company(used to be at Virgin Megastores before they shuttered) so yes I am very aware it is a sales technique. What is being argued is that doesn't make it a "cheap business ploy" designed " to "suck the last few dollars out of the fandom". Again quite clearly if that was the case there would be little to no free content and far more paid releases. It's a business and they are offering an advanced product that people want. There is nothing cheap about it and again the statement would only be true if the prologue wasn't included in the final product. No one is forcing you to buy it and you are not missing anything if you don't.

one man's [cheap] ploy is anothers good business strategy

Ok let's try this. What is cheap about selling an early release from the book? Especially when additional content is already given away for free. Keep in mind you are missing nothing if you don't buy it. It's not as if the prologue isn't included in the regular book. Contrary to xxx's claim it adds no additional cost to AMoL and they are not squeezing every last dollar from the fandom. It would be cheap if it was similar to the video game example given above but that is most certainly not the case.

in my first post i didn't call it cheap, just a ploy. if you want me to argue how it is a cheap ploy i can do that as well. it os cheap in the same way a cheap shot is cheap. it has nothing to do with actual cost. they know it will work to increase their profit margin and that is the only reason for doing it. the most casual readers who want to finish the series probably will not hear about the early prologue release. it takes advantage of an over eager fan base who will pay for a sneak peak. whether (generic)you think it is worth it or not does not change anything.

I could probably use a gift card to buy it, but I'd have no idea how to read it. If I don't buy it, I'd have to stay out of the spoiler forum.

One or two board members have introduced me to 'Calibre', an ebook reader which runs on PC, Mac, and Linux. I've downloaded it and tried it with a couple of free ebooks, there are quite a few around. Works well. Roll on next Tuesday and the Orbit UK release!
