when C17H35COOH enters the "betaoxidation-process" it looses 2 carbon atoms every "lap".

So 18/2 = 9 laps. BUT, for some reason you minus 9 by 1 and get 8 laps

So when counting how many ATP (AdenosinTriPhosphate) you end up with:

8 NADH + 8H
8 FADH2
9 Acetyl- Coa

If you have 17 carbon atoms, you would only need 8 laps to cut it up. Because on the last one, when you cut, you'd get 2 acetyl CoA (or whatever it is you get from 1 carbon atom)
