Well no one really knows, but the implications are that she may have died because she was a Forsaken and anything connected to the DO causes weird things to happen, or she may have not set a price and been killed, or Moriaine may have killed her, or any number of things.

 

As to why Moriaine didn't die, this again isn't really known, but she may have wished to remain with the Finns, alive, or may have set a price of remaining as their prisoner, or not wished to leave so the Finns just kept her, or RJ knows what. BUT we know she lived, and Lanfear died. That's about it at this point, except Lanfear lost her strength in the Power as well.

Well, we know that Lanfear was held for a time, so if she did die (that is not 100% confirmed, even though pretty much everything indicates that she did), it doesn't seem to have been just because she was a forsaken, in that case she should have been killed right away.

 

Most likely IMO is that she got killed in a failed attempt to escape.

 

A bit less likely possibility is that she saw death as the only way out, and counted on the DO to bring her back. But there are too many uncertanities there, for example how could she know about the DO recycling dead forsaken?

I personally think she was executed because she was responsible for destroying the ter'angreal doorway. Moiraine is only held prisoner because she had a lesser role in its destruction. But that is pure speculation.

 

Lanfear would have been held for a time before her execution so that the *finns could "sniff" their way through her "sensations". But then .... off with her head! And such a pretty head at that <sigh>.
