Dark One?

So you're hanging out in your house just kicking back.

Some guy comes in, kicks your ass and throws you in a bedroom then locks the door. He then proceeds to set up this spinning thing in your living room that starts spawning all these bugs and molds and other assorted crap.

The vermin are running rampant through your house, and all you want is to get out and clean the place up.

On top of that dead bugs keep getting dumped in the corner of your room. I sure hope you were left something better than THAT to eat.

That's the situation I think the dark one in the story is dealing with. No wonder he's so pissed off!

If I could squeeze the door open an inch and get my hands on some raid, by golly there'd be some blight going down!

Better yet, if I could get a few bugs on the outside to actually help me I'd be willing to set them up in a terrarium on a windowsill somewhere. Heck they might even be fun to watch on those days when I have time to get the magnifying glass out.

I mean Nablis is as good a pet name as Fido or Spot, right?

I get something a little more like this. Imagine that the Creator is a huge glowing ball of white light, and the Dark One is a huge shadowy ball of darkness, both floating about in the endless nothingness of space.

Creator: Yeah yeah the two halves of my power are so awesome, so perfect, that they are in fact totally perfectly awesome.

Shai'tan: HI WHAT YA DOIN?

Creator: Nothing, I am doing nothing. Go away and leave me to my doing-nothingness.

Shai'tan: WAIT A MINUTE, YOU MUST BE HIDING SOMETHING. I DONT KNOW WHY, BUT YOU JUST MUST BE. SO HAND IT OVER.

Creator: Hey listen pal I think you and me are guna have a disagreement if you dont scarper sharpish.

Shai'tan: AH WHATEVER MAN, IM GUNA SHOW YOU WHAT A JACKASS YOU REA-

The Creator doesnt dignify Shai'tan with any more words. Instead he brought his Power of Creation to bear, making an epic shield, called a Pattern, that not only consists of living threads, but is also governed by a sentient construct that would predict the shiftings of Shai'tan inside and guide the threads of the Pattern, so that whenever Shai'tan flexes his muscles and pushes the Pattern, the threads are always arrayed just right so he cant get out. The only way is for him to infect individual threads with his will, and then have them destroy it from the inside, the inside looking like an entire world as we see in the books. Shai'tan cant get into the physical world without channelers, and the "metaphysical" threads never leave an opening wide enough.

I love the Creator you depict! :)

And for the second part of your post, I really really really agree. I like to see raw ideas I have that I dismiss as irrelevant being put on a well-written post, an idea dressed in the most suitable words it can bear.

Yeah, you know, I think the envoy group the salidar faction sent to Camlyn went about things all wrong too.

Instead of trying that veil of mirrors gag I think they should have said "Hey, sorry about Alanna violating your trust in Aes Sedai and all, she's kind of impetuous. We'd like a chance to gain your trust back, but of course that will take something dramatic. So how about we go out on a limb here and offer you some trust. We're not going to channel or anything. We're just going to walk 'clothed in the light' over to you and give you a great big group hug."

I bet He would have hung out to hear what they had to say after that.

Geezer : an Aes Sedai speaking sympatheticly? Rand would have fled to the moon if they adressed him that way! :)

True. They beat that right out of them in training don't they. 'Character' I think they call it.

On reflection I think one can see Moradin's point. If the light and the dark keep fighting, either the dark is really stupid to fight something that they KNOW will win, or the dark has a chance of winning. Given an infinite number of chances (we're talking long term here) it will win a round. In that case the wheel gets trashed and all life as we know it gets tossed out the window.

What then?

Will everything just vaporize into nothingness? I don't think so. The dark one is an intelligence. It thinks. So it will introduce its own order. Its own constructs. Its own world - and it might not look like anything we would recognize as a world, but there would be some form of existence. At that point now the dark one is the creator.

Is the light gone? Are the forces and entities that are the light simply snuffed out?

Of course not. The story might be over for the people we're reading about but the forces of 'light' existed before the wheel. The Light is just the name we gave them. In the Dark One's world the forces we call the light would themselves be viewed as a corruption. They might have to operate behind the scenes for awhile, but the dark / evil can't exist in any recognizable form without light / good. The light would start to creep in around the edges. In time, the 'light' would seek to destroy the Dark One's creations.

Even if there truly was nothingness, isn't that what existed when the Creator came along? The Creator imprisoned the Dark One before. What's stopping him from doing it again? Things could be more cyclic than even the workings of the wheel suggest.

Creator: "Aww, you broke the Wheel? That's ok. The next one will be even better."

DO: "Again? I can't even count how many of those pesky things I've broken"

Creator: "Yeah but I can't just leave these things laying around, I'm running out of space on my shelves!"

In the end if one side wins perhaps all we need to do is switch sides and play again?
