CBS had a huge night with huge debuts for “Hawaii Five-0” and “Mike & Molly” and very strong showings for the rest of its sitcoms. The “Five-0” premiere tied “CSI Miami’s” best score of last season (for the episode that crossed over into the other CSI shows).

 

* “The Event” did way, way, way better than “Trauma” (best score last season: 2.2) or “Law & Order” (2.0) did on Mondays last season. I just finished watching the second and third “Event” episodes (@HercSpoils has details on Twitter) and can tell you I’m all aboard for the fourth and fifth at minimum.

 

* “Chase” had a slightly better premiere score than “Trauma” did last season, but did far worse than the first Monday episode of “The Jay Leno Show” a year ago.

 

* “Chuck,” the lowest-rated Monday show on the Big Three, continues to struggle. Its third-season premiere hit a 2.9; Monday's fourth-season premiere only hit a 2.0.

 

* ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” had Monday’s best network rating and did much better than the 4.1 its premiere scored last September. It also kept “Castle” plenty healthy.

 

* Fox looks to be in trouble. “House” continues to lose steam and viewers fled Fox (for “The Event”?) the minute “House” ended. “LoneStar” does not look long for this world (and TNT should perhaps reconsider its “Dallas” sequel).

* Audiences may have steered clear of Ryan Murphy’s critically-panned big-screen drama “Eat Pray Love” but they continue to gobble up Murphy’s “Glee,” which easily won the night and matched its all-time high -- without benefit of “American Idol” as a lead-in. It was a huge help to the premiere of Fox’s “Raising Hope,” which held onto enough of the “Glee” audience to beat “The Biggest Loser.” (It was less help to “Running Wilde,” which did not.)

 

* “Dancing With The Stars” is on the rise also; its Tuesday premiere beat every “Dancing” episode broadcast last year.

 

* The 2010 premieres of the still-strong “NCIS” and “NCIS LA” were both significantly lower than their 2009 premieres.

 

* NBC ratings cornerstone “Biggest Loser” was down a bit from its September 2009 premiere, and way down from its winter 2010 premiere.

 

* “Parenthood” remains solid, beating the premiere of “Detroit 1-8-7” but losing to the special second hour of “NCIS LA.” CBS’ far weaker “Good Wife” returns to 10 p.m. next week.

 

* The launch of “Detroit” was weaker than the (2.6) premiere of ABC’s “The Forgotten” last fall.

 

* “Sons of Anarchy” remains one of cable’s highest-rated scripted series. In adults 18-49 it’s Tuesday’s second-biggest cable series (after MTV’s “Teen Mom”) and dwarfs the CW’s ratings in that demo.

 

* The CW’s “Life Unexpected” hit an all-time low, pushing it closer to “The Beautiful Life” territory.

CBS:

 

* 8 p.m. “Survivor” fans are having NO trouble finding the reality competition now that it’s moved from Thursdays. It’s actually way up from its first two airings last September. Its second episode is up from the second “all-star” episode aired this winter, even against substantially increased 8 p.m. competition this week. It’s certainly doing FAR better than “Old Christine” (best score last season: 2.3) and “Gary Unmarried” (best score last season: 2.5) were doing in that slot.

 

* 9 p.m. “Criminal Minds” remained strong, retaining all of “Survivor’s” 18-49 demo, but it was down from its 2009 premiere.

 

* 10 p.m. With its big CBS lead-ins, Jim Belushi’s “The Defenders” opened decently but well down from the 4.0 scored by the 2009 premiere of “CSI NY.” It lost to a superstrong supersized “SVU” but slaughtered ABC’s “The Whole Truth.”

 

ABC:

 

* 8 p.m. “The Middle,” now a half-hour earlier, beat its 2009 premiere and gave a solid start to laughtrack newcomer “Better With You.”

 

* 9 p.m. “Modern Family,” which peaked at 4.3 last season, hit a amazing 5.1 with its second season premiere, beating its 2009 premiere by a substantial margin. “Cougar Town,” with movie-star help from Jennifer Aniston, fell substantially from its 2009 premiere and continues to lose a major chunk of its lead-in’s audience.

 

* 10 p.m. “The Whole Truth,” Maura Tierney’s mew series, looks like a strong candidate for cancellation. The cancelled “Ugly Betty” hit a lot of 1.6s and ended its run with a 1.7 in that timeslot.

 

Fox:

 

* 8 p.m. With a 2.6, “Hell’s Kitchen’s” first hour tied with “The Middle” for second place in that slot, losing by a substantial margin to reality competition “Survivor.” Fox’s Wednesday edition “So You Think You Can Dance” premiered with a 2.5 last autumn.

 

* 9 p.m. “Kitchen” rose to a 3.1 after the conclusion of tribal council, but fell to third place behind “Modern Family” and “Criminal Minds.” Its two-hour average was about the same as its summer premiere score a few months ago.

 

NBC:

 

* 8 p.m. J.J. Abrams’ “Undercovers” went lower than the 2.3 the premiere of “Mercy” a year ago in that slot. People paid good money to see "Star Trek" last year!

 

* 9 p.m. The first hour of “SVU” hit a 2.9 – still fourth place but much better than the 2009 “SVU” premiere.

 

* 10 p.m. The second hour of “SVU” timeslot took the show from fourth place to first as it surged to 3.5. (“SVU’s” best score last season was a 3.3!) Last fall the Wednesday edition of “The Jay Leno Show” premiered with a 3.5, but by this week last year “Leno” had fallen to a 2.0 (before going much lower still). Newcomer “Law & Order: Los Angeles” takes over the slot next Wednesday.

 

The CW:

 

* 8 p.m. “Top Model” is lagging its first three episodes from last fall.

 

* 9 p.m. “Hellcats” continues to deflate.

 

FX:

 

*10 p.m. “Terriers” started in the ratings basement and went down from there. Pity; I quite enjoyed the third episode, which starred the fabulous Britisher Olivia Williams.

8 p.m. “Bang” fans had little trouble finding their Monday show on Thursday. Its 2010 premiere was up from its 2009 premiere and easily won the timeslot traditionally won by “Survivor.”

 

8:30 p.m.The Shat’s “Shit” also won its coveted timeslot over “Bones,” “30 Rock” “My Generation” and “Vampire Diaries.” “Survivor’s” autumn 2009 premiere hit a 3.6. The reality show peaked at 4.5 last season.

 

9 p.m. “CSI” was way down from its 2009 premiere, losing again to “Grey’s” and “Office,” but still ahead of “Fringe” and “Nikita.”

 

10 p.m. “Mentalist” was down a bit from its 2009 premiere, but still won its timeslot against “Private Practice,” “The Apprentice” and “Jersey Shore.”

 

ABC:

 

8 p.m. “Generation” tied The CW’s “Vampire Diaries” for a disastrous fifth place. The now-cancelled “FlashForward” premiered with a 4.0 first-place win in the timeslot one year ago. I guess we know where “V” is headed?

 

9 p.m. “Anatomy” won the night but was way down from its 2009 premiere.

 

10 p.m. “Private” was way down from its 4.6 2009 premiere, losing to “The Mentalist” but beating “Jersey Shore” and “The Apprentice.”

 

NBC:

 

8 p.m. “Community” was way down from its 3.8 9:30 p.m. post-“Office” 2009 premiere, but up a bit from the 1.9 it scored in its 8 p.m. debut against “Survivor,” “Bones” “FlashForward,” and “Vampire Diaires” last fall.

 

8:30 Though “Rock” was predictably below its 3.0 2009 premiere in the post-“Office” slot, it still did surprisingly well with its move to 8:30; “Parks and Recreation” never got above a 2.3 in the 8:30 p.m. slot last season. I credit a sturdy “30 Rock” fan base but also the disappearance of “Survivor” and especially the arrival of “Shit.” I can see “Big Bang” fans flocking to “30 Rock” at 8:30 on a regular basis.

 

9 p.m. Driven perhaps by news of Steve Carell’s impending departure, “Office” made a huge comeback. It was up from its 2009 premiere, tied the huge Jim-Pam wedding episode and hit its best number since the hour-long March 4 Cecelia Halpert Birth episode.

 

9:30 The debut of “Outsourced” was down from the 3.8 “Community” premiere in the post-“Office” timeslot this time a year ago – this despite “The Office” providing a bigger lead-in this year. Blame the reviews.

 

10 p.m. The first non-celebrity “Apprentice” in more than three years is clearly a disaster even Donald Trump can’t make excuses for, way down from last spring’s Sunday celebrity edition. This despite the Sunday edition having to contend with new episodes of blockbusters like “Undercover Boss,” “Desperate Housewives” and “Family Guy.” A year ago the first two Thursday episodes of “The Jay Leno Show” hit a 2.7 then a 1.7 in the slot. Last March “The Marriage Ref” launched with a 3.4. “Ref” never fell below a 1.6.

 

MTV:

 

10 p.m. “Jersey Shore” slipped a bit against all the premieres but still almost doubled the key demo watching “The Apprentice” at that hour! It also didn’t lose to “The Mentalist” or “Private Practice” by a very steep margin.

 

Fox:

 

8 p.m. “Bones” was down from its 2009 pre-season launch, but easily beat the NBC sitcoms, ABC’s “My Generation” and The CW “Vampire Diaries to take second-place in its slot.

 

9 p.m. “Fringe” was way way down from its 2009 pre-season launch. Only four prior “Fringe” episodes scored lower than its third-season premiere. (It also tied with Wednesday launch of Bad Robot’s “Undercovers” over on NBC.) But it’s premiere week in a brutal timeslot; one assumes “Fringe” will do better counterprogramming repeats later in the season.

 

The CW:

 

8 p.m. “Vampire” matched its first and third episodes of last September, but its second episode hurt its season-to-season average.

 

9 p.m. “Nikita’s” premiere bested the 1.2 fifth-season launch of “Supernatural,” but the espionage drama quickly fell to typical “Supernatural” levels with subsequent episodes.

 

FX:

 

10 p.m. “Sunny” matched its 2009 premiere.

 

10:30 p.m. “League” hit a series best with its second-season premiere but quickly plummeted back to its typically tiny audience.

* “The Simpsons” was down from its 4.3 2009 season premiere. The Cleveland Show” was way down from its 4.9 2009 series premiere, finishing 3rd place at 8:30 p.m.

 

* “Desperate Housewives” continues to deflate, scoring lower than its 2009 season premiere and taking third place at 8 p.m. “Brothers & Sisters” was down slightly from its 3.0 2009 season premiere.

 

* “Undercover Boss,” airing later than usual (at least out here on the West Coast), hit a personal low but still easily bested “Brothers & sisters” at 10 p.m.

 

* “The Amazing Race,” with its melon-assualt episode, was on fire, finishing well ahead of its 2009 3.4 autumn premiere and its 2.8 2010 winter premiere. Incredibly, it was still in fourth place at the 9 p.m. hour (but in second place at 8:30).

 

* “Boardwalk Empire” slipped predictably from its huge launch, but still finished as Sunday’s top pay-cable show and second-biggest cable show (after “The Kardashians”). With all the competition at 9 p.m. I imagine a lot of viewers will be catching up via repeats, DVR or On Demand.

 

* “Eastbound and Down,” was up a whopping 150% over its first-season premiere. “Bored To Death” was up 2% from its first-season premiere. Which is less.

 

* If that 0.8 for “Dexter’s” season premiere sounds a little puny, know that it was up 16% from its 2009 premiere and Showtime’s biggest telecast of 2010.

* FOX. “Glee” hit another new all-time high (even without the help of “American Idol”!). It’s prior personal best was a 5.6. “Glee” is now indisputably the highest rated scripted series in primetime. “Raising Hope” didn’t rise with it and “Running Wilde” lost ground, hitting the lowest score of any Tuesday series on the Big Four. “Running Wilde’s” 1.9 is cancellation-worthy, but Fox has kept sitcoms (“Til Death,” “Brothers”) on with a lot less.

* ABC. The “No Ordinary Family” premiere was third in its timeslot with a 3.2, a little soft for an ABC sci-fi launch. ABC’s “V” premiere won that timeslot with a 5.0 last autumn. ABC’s “FlashForward” premiere won its 8 p.m. Thursday timeslot last fall with a 4.0. ABC’s final season premiere of “Lost” won its timeslot early this year with a 5.5. A newly Hoff-free “Dancing With The Stars” was down from the 4.4 it scored in the 9 p.m. slot last Tuesday but it was up if one averages both its hours from last Tuesday. “Detroit 187” slipped to an anemic 2.1 but it still (barely) beat the lowest-rated “Parenthood” ever.

 

* NBC. “Biggest Loser,” which dominated Tuesdays all last season, just hit its lowest score since I started keeping track last September. “Parenthood,” which won its slot all last spring, hit its worst number ever. It spent its first 90 minutes in fourth place, rising to third at 9:30 p.m. by overtaking “Running Wilde.” Its prior nadir was a 2.3.

 

* MTV. “Teen Mom” beat both NBC’s “Parenthood” and ABC’s “Detroit 187” at 10 p.m. and came dang close to beating first-place “The Good Wife” at that hour. I’m assuming this is an all-time high for the documentary series. Blame the promos on MTV’s Thursday megahit “Jersey Shore.”

 

* FX. “Sons of Anarchy” hit its lowest score since I started keeping track last September.

 

* THE CW. “One Tree Hill” rose a bit. “Life Unexpected” can probably expect an unexpectedly short life.

 

* SYFY. “Stargate Universe” returned with a 0.5, way down from the 0.9 it scored with its series premiere last fall. Syfy’s Tuesday-night predecessor, “Warehouse 13,” never got below a 0.7 during its just-concluded run.

* “Jersey Shore” hit another new peak, beating “The Mentalist,” “Private Practice,” “The Apprentice” and everything else at 10 p.m.

 

* To no one's surprise, ABC just announced it has cancelled "My Generation." No word on what will replace it at 8 p.m. Thursdays, but one hears there's a third Shonda Rhimes lady-doctor series ready to go. Here’s how it compares to other ABC shows:

 

* All broadcast shows fell except “30 Rock” and “Nikita,” both unchanged in the demo from last week.

 

* ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” already way down from its 2009 premiere, and “Outsourced” fell farthest from last week. “Shit My Dad Says” and “The Office” fell hard also.

 

* It’s hard to imagine NBC pulling “The Apprentice” mid-season, but you know they’ve got to be thinking about it. My advice is to leave it on but bring in “Parks and Recreation” to replace “Outsourced,” which is like viewer kryptonite.

* “The Simpsons” was up sharply, due no doubt to football.

 

* “Family Guy,” which bowed at 5.2 last season, fell sharply this week for no clear reason.

 

* “American Dad” was down from last year, when its 2009 premiere hit a 3.6.

 

* “Amazing Race” dropped this week, but is still running well ahead of its last two races.

 

* New-to-Sunday “CSI Miami” was way down from the 4.3 it scored with its Monday premiere a year ago, but still handily beat “Brothers & Sisters” at 10 p.m. It’s also doing a lot better than “Cold Case,” which never got above a 2.6 last season.
