I think Mat is going to trade the foxhead medallion for the knife and use it in the tower of Genji as it is iron unlike many of the other weapons/knives in the book or that Mat carries which are steel. Verin's letter will have a play in Mat's decision to leave and go to the tower. He'll give the medallion to Elayne as it is the only thing he knows that can hurt the bloody thing. However Elayne will think he is vulnerable since he is also a target of the shadow and of the gholm so she'll give him the knife to hide him on his small secret mission into Mordor umm... the tower. >.<

 

Perrin's wolfdream of Mat 'naked and bound' (tSR53) suggests that he will have the medallion with him at the ToG.

Mat stood naked and bound, snarling; an odd spear with a black shaft had been thrust across his back behind his elbows, and a silver medallion, a foxhead, hung on his chest.

 

I had originally thought this applied to when he first received the fox head and ashanderai. He was 'taken' out of Finnland and hung. However looking at it he was fully clothed and only 'naked' of his weapons. I believe he even stated he felt naked. I had taken this metaphorically not literally. However since you've pointed it out I will acknowledge that it probably wasn't full filled then.

 

However he was bound naked more than once with Tylin when he was first meeting Tuon. I believe she left the medallion on him and as for the ashanderai... *Shrugs*. It may apply to the ToG since there is enough foreshadowing and thematic elements that RJ used leading to an event, however I'm not willing to say unequivocally that it will apply to the ToG.

 

Which I will ask you in return, what will the price of an eye gain one with the finns compared to ones skin? A gambling cheater might be able to distract and bargain with the finns long enough for a master of daes dae'mar to pull a stone from the fire...

Let's look at the sequence of events.

 

Rand emerges from the columns of Rhuidean to find Mat hanging from the tree, takes him down and resuscitates him, in TSR26. We next see Rand and Mat in TSR34 as they return to Chaendar.

 

Chapters 27-33 deal with Perrin in TR. So these timelines are interleaved.

The dream of Egwene seems to relate to her being raised to Amyrlin; the dream of Rand seems to be about his travels between nearly balefiring Tam and VoG. The Mat dream is likely also to be about the future.

Guessing.. To the finns, skin seems to be decorative; the eye may be functional. Mat thinks they may be seeing through it, though if they are, they surely won't want it back! Maybe he's buying his freedom from them with it?

Has Brandon confirmed whether this is the first chapter of the book?

There isn't the Wind paragraph of introduction opening the first chapter. And the preview tend to be the very first chapters. Either the wind passage is lacking to have more of a partial first chapter/because we know of it or it isn't the first chapter, probably the second.

This won't be the first chapter or at least not the first paragraph of the first chapter if the wind scene isn't included. BS gave us the first paragraph a while back, with the 3 new words.

I think it is the second chapter. I found a google doc with almost the whole text decrypted, and there are elipses that shouldn't. There are sentences and words here and there lacking, but we hear of the new Queen. So Elayne is already crowned. So we missed the Crowning. Which indicates, even if it is Elayne, that there is somethng before lacking.

 

But that could be intentional...
