I need some help - anyone good at history here?

Recommended Posts

Ok guys, I'm really sorry to bug you, but I'm helping my bro with some history work on the first universities in England to receive the Royal Charter. A few universities claim they were the first ones: can anyone find a document or link that strongly supports one of the older universities' claims?

Thanks in advance  :D

I think Cambridge was first to get a charter..but with mediveal times being as it was what we see as a royal charter now was a bit different back when colleges where springing forth in about the 12th century. So hope this helps...Oh and yes Cambridge and Oxford were schools before the 2nd centruy or so but they were more basic learning...not a univeristy as it was seen by the 12th century and beyond.

Okay, seeing as how this thread is properly titled for my question... I am trying to help my sister write an essay for some class (as if I care enough to check which one LOL) and it is on the Romans occupying the land where England, Wales, and Scotland now are. Now, we found that they were in England as a major force and when, but we can't find ANYTHING on Scotland and Wales, and if they ever even a presence there! I was wondering if any of our wonderful Brits might know or be able to find it easier than I seem to be able to..?

*smiles sweetly* I would sure owe you one!

Hey Adella the Romans didn't occupy Scotland past Hadrian s wall and the Antoine Wall. Lemme see if I can get you anything on the Wall and why it was built...I could just tell you but that wouldn't be helpful. *laughs*

Here's something on Hadrian's wall

And heres you go about the Romans in Wales. :)

If he can't use Wikipedia sites a small cheat is to scroll to the bottom of the page and find a list of sites where they got the information and use one of those. :) I hope it helps some.

Hey Adella for your question.  Rome never conquered the area now known as scottland due to how wild it was and the barbarians that were their.  So they bult Hadens wall named after General of XX or XXIst romen legion i think. As for Whale well that was all conqured under rome and was seen as different from rest of Britain at the time.  Hope that little bit helps.

Yea Lord what are looking for specifically? Cause woman had general roles of maintaing the home, sewing, raising kids, etc during colonial times.

what happened to going to the library and look it up in books, often its the best starting point for school papers even today, just cause we have the www today dont mean it always is the best source for finding answers all the time

history books i am sure would give answers, it just means you cant sit down and do the paper the night before you have to deliver it (when the library is closed), but actually have to start earlier (like when you get it, so you have time)

so yes i know this dont help if your paper is due tomorrow or monday morning bright, but if not, then my advice is serious, go to the library and get the books on that area for the time period, its much easier then starting to wade through the nett to find good sources

Also for everyone...Library of Congress (yes THE library) has a lot of its info on the web for people all over the country to use. Very good website for finding info.

As has been mentioned, what is considered Scotland today was never conquered. Hadrian's Wall is actually in England. There is also Antonine Wall. which was also built by the Romans, and that is in Scotland. Your best source for information on the war in the North is Tacitus' Agricola, which recounts his father-in-law's campaign in the North.
