Was Corien Disspointed or Was She Not?

Okay, I come here some, mostly read posts, don’t post much myself since I am only book six.  But the reason I am still only on book six is that I find myself continually bogged down with this series, having quit it at least five times in the last three years only to find myself wanting to find out how things turn out and jumping back in.  I am curious to know, what is the overall impression of Robert Jordan’s writing style?  Despite the fact that I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction and even enjoy some of the more cryptic hard SciFi stuff, I struggle with Jordan.  The best way I can describe it, he seems to overwrite at times, going on for pages about the kinds of dresses that Aes Sedai happens to have on in one particular scene, the colors and patterns of the rugs, books on shelves, etc.  Yes it creates a rather vivid image in the mind’s eye but it also drags the plot down terribly and often, by the time I’ve read all of Jordan’s intricate descriptions, I’ve completely forgotten the context of the scene and find myself rereading.

So I’m in chapter 27, reading along, and I read this line near the end of the chapter: “It might not have been a sister – three Aiel women seemed to turn up when she went into the royal library, and two could channel – but she wanted to see their reactions.  She was not disappointed; or rather she was.”

Was Corien disappointed or was she not?  And why write it like that?  Why say your character was something and then, mid sentence decide, you know, maybe she wasn’t and write it that way?  Yes this is nit picking but this is merely one example of why his writing perplexes me at times.  I love the characters, I am intrigued by the primary story and plot lines, and am committed to finishing this series but wow, it can be frustrating at times.

Am I the only one who experiences this?

There are two ways in which the word disppointed can be used. One way, is meaning that you are unhappy with something. The other way, meaning something is not as you expected it to be. So in this context, it means she wasn't surprised, but she was saddened by it, I believe.

This. Pretty straight forward.
