Wolverine 2 is set to begin shooting in January 2011 and definitely will take place in Japan. As reported by Roger Friedman’s Show Biz 411 (who, in an bizarre twist, is just reporting on a Wolverine movie instead of happily bootlegging it) , the second Wolverine appears to be an adaptation of Chris Claremont and Frank Miller’s classic 1982 comic book arc. Hit the jump to learn more about Logan’s exploits in Japan.

In Marvel comic’s continuity, Wolverine has always longed for Japan. In Claremont and Miller’s hallmark Wolverine tale, Logan embarks to Japan and falls in love with Mariko Yashida. Since nothing is easy, Mariko is the heiress to the Oyabun family, a powerful and lethal Yakuza crime family. Chaos ensues, many ninjas wind up dead, and Wolverine seemingly overcomes his vicious feral nature. As of now, Wolverine 2’s script is being hammered out by Christopher McQuarrie (X-Men, Valkyrie) with no director currently attached to the project.  Putting the debacle that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine aside, this movie could be fun. The storyline is a perfect examination of the burly berserker. Hopefully, this film will keep the raging Canuck as the focus rather than surrounding him with endless mutant cameos.  Wolverine is the best there is at what he does, so let him do it.

With Darren Aronofsky's departure and the Japan disaster, many have been left wondering if "The Wolverine" film will ever get off the ground.

Now, Hugh Jackman spoke with Coming Soon yesterday at CinemaCon and said the film is still going ahead, but no dates are yet locked.

“We need to find another director and once we’ve found that, we’ll be able to know. It’s too early to call on Japan, I’m not sure where they’re at, so now we’re finding another director, but Fox is very anxious to make the movie and we’re moving ahead full steam to find another director” says Jackman.

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner said a similar sentiment the other day, though with Jackman's schedule it does seem likely a shoot will not take place until the end of the year at the earliest.

Out doing the "Real Steel" truck event at the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday, Hugh Jackman revealed which character would be the villain in the upcoming "The Wolverine" at 20th Century Fox.

Jackman says "I'll fight the Silver Samurai in it so that should be exciting". He also confirmed that shooting will begin in October with most of it taking place in Japan.

In the comics, the Silver Samurai is a Japanese mutant with the power to charge almost anything with a tachyon field. This enables his katana blade to slice through any known substance, with the exception of adamantium (which covers Wolvie's skeleton and claws).

"Chris McQuarrie has written a fantastic script and it should turn out really good" says Jackman. James Mangold is currently slated to direct.

Just saw this today.

thought it was pretty good compared to the crap I've seen in theatres this year so far.

Oh, and if you watch it, wait about 3 minutes after the credits roll.

Scene that plays out is.. epic.

Wasn't THAT psyched when the trailer came out. I thought it was going to be just another movie made to further squeeze cash out of the money making X Men franchise.

I've heard only good things from my friends so far though, so I'll trust their opinion and go watch it soon. Glad to hear you thought it was good.
