Breaking Dawn

I'm mainly putting this up for FDM since I know she loves Edward eeeeeeeeeee! (as Empy would put it)

Breaking Dawn", the final chapter in the "Twilight" franchise", will apparently be shot as two films back-to-back starting in mid-October reports Deadline Hollywood.

The splitting of the final book into two films (like with the "Harry Potter" franchise) has long been rumoured, but this is the first word on an actual date being targeted to begin production.

Summit Entertainment is apparently looking at 'high-end directors' presently to helm the feature which scribe Melissa Rosenberg is currently adapting.

No release dates have been mentioned though it's likely one of two scenarios. The first would be to have Part 1 in June 2011 and Part 2 in November 2011 to release it in the same calendar year, a move that would require post-production to be completed rather quickly.

The other scenario would be Part 1 in November 2011 and Part 2 in June 2012, following a year later in the same release slots as the final "Harry Potter" two-part film (its Nov. 2010 and June 2011).

Update: At present Summit is officially denying the claim, saying the decision is not yet made - "No decision has been made and as we have said all along we are continuing to work with Stephenie Meyer to bring 'Breaking Dawn' to the big screen" a studio rep told Coming Soon.

Too bad FDM isn't here anymore; I would totally make some comment about her being a huge fangirl.

Anyways, the director has just been announced.  It's Bill Condon.  If you're not jumping up and down at this news, it's probably because you've never heard of him.  Don't worry, you're not alone.  Only a select few movie buffs and Academy followers have heard of Condon despite his pretty decent resume.  However, he's mostly done older soul movies, so it will be interesting to see how he directs a movie targeted for teenage girls (and FDM).

A just issued official press release confirms Bill Condon will direct 'Breaking Dawn' but makes no mention of splitting the book into two films. Here's the release in full:

Summit Entertainment has confirmed that Academy Award® winner Bill Condon will direct "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn", based on the fourth novel in author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" is currently being written by Melissa Rosenberg, and will star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Wyck Godfrey, Karen Rosenfelt, and Stephenie Meyer will produce the project.

"Bringing Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn to the screen requires a graceful and intelligent hand and we believe Bill Condon is exactly the right steward, having shown equal and abundant talents of immense creativity and subtle sensitivity,” said Erik Feig, President of Production and Acquisitions, for Summit Entertainment.

Added author Stephenie Meyer, "I'm so thrilled that Bill wants to work with us. I think he's going to be a great fit, and I'm excited to see what he does with the material."

“I'm very excited to get the chance to bring the climax of this saga to life on-screen. As fans of the series know, this is a one-of-a-kind book - and we're hoping to create an equally unique cinematic experience," said Bill Condon.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" illuminates the secrets and mysteries of this spellbinding romantic epic that has entranced millions.

Condon is well known for writing and directing Dreamgirls, Kinsey, and Gods and Monsters, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1999. He was nominated for a second Oscar for his screenplay for the movie musical Chicago in 2003. Most recently the multi-hyphenate directed the pilot episode for the Showtime series “The Big C” and produced the 81st Annual Academy Awards telecast, hosted by Hugh Jackman.

The third film in the franchise, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" is due in theaters on June 30, 2010.

Bill Condon, the director, talks about Breaking Dawn

Filmmaker Bill Condon has posted a note on the official Facebook page for Summit's "The Twilight Saga" where he discusses his motivation behind taking the job and how he's already immersed himself in the books and films. Here's the note in full:

"Greetings Twihards, Twifans, Twilight Moms, Team Edward, Team Jacob and Team Switzerland,

I just want to say hello to all of you and let you know that I'm stoked to be getting underway on the adventure of making "Breaking Dawn". As you've probably heard, I've been given a very warm welcome by Stephenie and Team Summit - who are super-focused, as you know, on getting these movies right.

I'm pretty busy bringing myself up to speed on what you already know by heart: I've read "Breaking Dawn" twice, rewatched Catherine's and Chris's movies 2-3 times each, have all four CDs playing in my car, and have Catherine's notebook, Mark Cotta Vaz's companion books, and even Volume 1 of the graphic novel here on my desk - a corner of my office is starting to look like Hot Topic. I realize that this barely qualifies me for "newborn" status in the universe you've been living inside for a few years now, but a guy's gotta start somewhere.

Like many of you, I've always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series "Dark Shadows", which I followed avidly as a kid. But that alone hadn't been enough to get me interested in making a vampire movie, even though my early screenwriting and directing efforts grew out of a great love for horror movies and thrillers. Since making "Gods and Monsters" thirteen years ago, however, I've been yearning for a return to a story with Gothic overtones.

The wonderful world that Stephenie has created has obviously struck a chord with you, and I don't think it's difficult to see why. For me, her characters are simultaneously timeless, yet very modern. Rooted in a beautiful, real landscape with a great sense of place, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the Forks/La Push menagerie, experience emotions that are primal, and universal: desire, despair, jealousy - and it all comes to fruition in "Breaking Dawn". This is a final chapter in the best sense; not just wide in scope and scale, but emotionally charged and intense throughout.

I'm a huge admirer of the already-iconic Kristen, Robert, and Taylor, and wanted to be the one to work with them as they face the challenges of bringing your beloved characters to the end of their journeys. Really, what could be more fun than that?"

Already-iconic?  I think I just threw up in my mouth.

Though we've all known about it for a while, Summit Entertainment finally confirmed today that "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" will be released as two separate films.

In fact they even announced the release date for 'Part One' as November 18th 2011. No doubt Part Two will hit late June 2012 if the film series holds to the current patterns.

Bill Condon will direct both films and all the key cast will return including all the members of the Cullen family. Shooting on the project kicks off in the Fall.

Meanwhile star Robert Pattinson has joked with French magazine Premiere (via The Stuff about 'Dawn', saying "I would love it if Breaking Dawn became a totally hard core series for adults. I wonder how they'll bring that to the big screen."

As 'Dawn' features Edward and Bella having a honeymoon on a Brazillian island, complete with rough sex, many are wondering how the subject matter will be handled in a PG-13 way.

Pattinson laughingly adds "Can you imagine if they decided to go full out and Twilight suddenly became this totally hard core series for adults with nude scenes? Summit would suddenly become the most progressive studio in the world. It would be funny."

oh and i have an interesting question ... speaking of Honeymoons and the baby

Ed's a vamp right ...  which means his body is technically dead, complete with lack of bodily fluids and blood flow ...

so, wouldn't that mean it's impossible for him to get Bella preggo??  as well as to be able to function properly for parts of honeymoon??

*hides*

I wondered that myself.

PG-13 WARNING

I mean, I guess he can go forever, but does that mean he's just constantly.....you know.  If so, that would be weird.  Obviously, he has venom, because they use that to make other vampires; so there's some sort of bodily fluid in vampires.  I think Meyers didn't think that part through very well.  I thinks she just loved the idea of a perpetual orgasm and didn't think of other possible ramifications.

Lots of New Casting News!!!!!!

Summit Entertainment have announced a whole swath of the supporting cast for the upcoming "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" films - namely those playing the members of the various vampire covens and nomads from around the world. Joining the cast are:

The Amazon Coven

Tracey Heggins ("Medicine for Melancholy," "Things Fall Apart") as Senna and Judi Shekoni ("Garfield 2," "Private Moments") as Zafrina.

Among the oldest vampires in the world, Senna and Zafrina are descendants of an ancient Amazonian tribe. They have lived outside of civilization for centuries and therefore make no attempt to keep up a human facade. Though they drink human blood, the Amazons have long been allies of Carlisle.

The Egyptian Coven

Omar Metwally ("Rendition," "Munich") as Amun, Andrea Gabriel ("Lost," "House") as Kebi, Rami Malek ("24," "Night at the Museum") as Benjamin, and Angela Sarafyan ("Love Hurts," "The Good Guys") as Tia.

The Egyptian Coven consists of Amun, Kebi, Benjamin, and Tia, with Amun as the leader. It is stated that even though they are not a biological family, they could pass for one. Amun is extremely protective of his family and fearful of Aro.

The Irish Coven

Marlane Barnes ("The Tree of Life," "Artois the Goat ") as Maggie, Lisa Howard as Siobhan and Patrick Brennan as Liam.

The Irish Coven, a relatively young group, was founded by Siobhan and Liam, but Maggie's talent made her an important element of it. They are not vegetarian but they are civilized.

The Romanian Coven

Noel Fisher ("The Pacific," "Final Destination 2") as Vladimir and Guri Weinberg ("You Don't Mess with the Zohan," "Cane") as Stefan.

The Romanian Coven is one of the oldest covens in the world and they were the ruling vampire family until they were unseated by the Volturi. For that reason they harbor a centuries old resentment of the Italian coven.

The American Nomads

Lee Pace ("Pushing Daisies," "Infamous") as Garrett, Toni Trucks ("Music and Lyrics," "All of Us") as Mary, Bill Tangradi ("Amigo," "Castle") as Randall, Erik Odom ("Transposition," "To Hell and Back") as Peter, Valorie Curry ("Veronica Mars") as Charlotte.

Turned during the Revolutionary War, Garrett has chosen to live a nomadic existence, wandering the world on his own. Garrett has never lost the rebellious spirit of his human life, and loves a good fight, always rooting for the underdog. Though not a vegetarian, Garrett is among Carlisle's closest and oldest friends.

Peter and Charlotte are nomadic vampires and mates. They were created during the aftermath of the Southern Vampire Wars, in which Jasper was a key player. They have remained friends with Jasper ever since.

Mary and Randall are American nomadic vampires.

The European Nomads

Joe Anderson ("The Crazies," "Across the Universe") as Alistair

A nomadic vampire from England, Alistair has a misanthropic, brooding personality and a deep mistrust of all authority. Although he counts Carlisle as his closest acquaintance, he doesn’t visit more than once a century.

So while I'm not a twi-tard, I did enjoy the books. They aren't the best thing ever written, but to me they are entertaining (they remind me sort of like the Eragon books in that fashion). I liked them way before they were "popular." I had to wait awhile for the third one to come out. I even suggested them to my friends, who would not read them becuase it sounded dumb to them, but those same friends now love them. Talk about bandwagon jumping. Anywho, enough of my ranting.

Honestly I think the movies are crap though. I can't stand watching them. I've seen the first one twice, the second one once, and I haven't seen the third one yet. I hate K Stew as Bella. I hate her as an actress period, but especially as Bella. She just can't act. And R Pats as Edward? He isn't even cute to me. He has a flat face. And he can't act either. Taylor is an okay Jacob. I think if they had cast better actors, maybe I would've liked it more, but really I don't think they care at all about the quality of the films.

IMO, the first film was way closer to the book than the second one. Though there are major parts in both movies that are nothing like the books, and totally ruin the movies.

Anyway I'm glad they are(might?)be splitting the 4th book in half, it was my second favorite book of the series, though I really don't have high hopes for the movies in general. Nothing can save them with the main cast they have. I will be seeing the movies eventually, however I don't think I will see it in theatres, as I haven't seen any of the others in theatres.

I agree with you here. The writing is simplistic and un-endearing, but semi-entertaining. I enjoyed the First and Last books the best. The 2nd and 3rd sucked because I can't stand that whole "teenage angst" theme. My sister got me into the books before they were hugely popular, so I know what you mean about bandwagon jumping...but since I don't really give a shit about Twilight, I don't care about bandwagoning.

The movies are complete crap. The first one was simply mediocre: the acting was terrible, but the movie itself didn't suffer technically as much. The second film suffered from bad acting AND terrible directing. I haven't seen the 3rd one yet, but I probably won't any time soon. K Stew is attractive, but a terrible Bella. I loved her in Adventureland, though. I consider myself a good judge of male beauty, but I can't for the life of me figure out why girls swoon over R Pat. He's even worse as an actor than K Stew. Taylor was ok in the first, but I liked him less in the second.

i lol'ed at this thread.

Unfortunately my Ex made me read the whole series, it's the worst thing i EVER did. But aren't the things we do for love daft? anyhoo thats old, and horrible news.

The twilight books are poorly written shams of litriture.

It shames me to think that the author is mormon...and just when i thought our celeb publicity couldn't get any worse with Donny Ozmond.

The films are even worse than the books, if thats possible...awww, everytime i think about edward i just wanna curl up and puke my insides out.

I even dressed up as him as a joke for last years halloween, turned out i was allergic to the glitter/cream stuff i put all over my body...i had red raw skin for the rest of the week, serves me right i suppose

EDIT: Lol'ed so hard at kraks PG-13 post...hahahah
