Avatar was on course to cross $1bn through Fox International at the overseas box office last night [January 14] as it bears down on Titanic’s high-water mark.

James Cameron’s sci-fi adventure stood at $979m by the close of Wednesday and based on current weekday averages of roughly $20m a day it will certainly push past $1bn by Friday.

Avatar is the second highest grossing overseas release in history and looks odds-on to overhaul Titanic’s $1.24bn final tally to become the biggest international release of all time.

Titanic finished on $1.842bn globally while Avatar is running at $1.42bn. Last weekend it gained more than 5% on the previous weekend and should have little trouble retaining its crown with a big anticipated second weekend in China as well as other mighty holds.

Heading into the seventh weekend Avatar stands at $1.17bn and looks odds-on to overhaul Titanic’s $1.242bn 12-year international box office record over the next few days in what is certain to be another mighty hold.

Then Fox International’s sci-fi adventure will surge on toward the ultimate prize – the $1.842bn worldwide tally. Avatar has amassed $1.685bn globally and will become the biggest release of all time possibly this weekend or more likely sometime early next week.

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Tuesday for the final figures based on actual box office.

For the sixth week straight, the box office is all about James Cameron's Avatar, as it added another $36 million this weekend to set a new record for a movie's sixth weekend gross. More importantly, it has now grossed $552.8 million domestically, making it the second-highest grossing movie domestically, passing The Dark Knight's $533.3 million over the weekend and putting it in sight to cross Titanic's long-standing record of $600.8 million sometime next month. Internationally, Avatar earned $107 million this weekend to push its overseas total to a massive $1.28 billion, surpassing Titanic's previous international record of $1.24 billion. Worldwide, the film has collected $1.836 billion and is about to surpass Titanic's global record of $1.843 billion.

Avatar takes #1 internationally

James Cameron's galactic blue cats have officially overtaken James Cameron's doomed passenger ship as late Monday night "Avatar" passed the $1.843 billion dollar global haul of "Titanic" to become the highest grossing film of all-time worldwide.

Much of the coin has come from outside the US with "Avatar" racking up $1.29 billion in foreign receipts in 111 markets so far, making it the top international grossing film ever.

Domestically it stands at $551 million, still behind "Titanic" with $600.8 million, but at present rate it's expected to become the highest grossing film in the US sometime next week.

The big question of course is attendance. With the 3D screening charging a higher price for tickets, many are wondering the key figure of how many actual tickets have been sold. That number is being kept secret for now.

Adjusted for inflation, the film currently sits as the 26th highest domestic grosser of all time - sandwiched between 1978 musical "Grease" and 1965 James Bond film "Thunderball".

Avatar has done it!

It's official. Through Tuesday, James Cameron's "Avatar" has scored a total domestic box-office take of $601.142 million reports Box Office Mojo. That number pushes the sci-fi epic up to being the #1 highest grossing domestic film of all time, edging past Cameron's own 1997 feature "Titanic" with $600.8 million.

The record fell in seven weeks, "Avatar" taking in that time what "Titanic" took essentially a year to achieve. Admittedly "Avatar" was helped by higher ticket prices and additional costs for 3D viewing.

The film currently sits at $2.07 billion worldwide. In gross totals, it tops almost every chart. One notable exception though are domestic grosses adjusted for inflation. On that list, "Avatar" presently sits at #21 between "Fantasia" ($632m) and "The Godfather" ($600.6m). "Gone with the Wind" sits unchallenged on the top of that list with $1.53 billion.

HAHA!

Many expected it would be the return of Mel Gibson or the 'Wolfman' remake that would do it, but in an interesting twist it was the young romantic drama "Dear John" which pushed James Cameron's sci-fi epic "Avatar" from the top spot at the weekend box-office after seven weeks of unchallenged supremacy.

'John' scored a much stronger than expected $32.4 million weekend opening in North America, outdoing the eighth weekend of "Avatar" which came in second with $23.6 million. Cameron's film is currently sitting on a $2.2 billion global haul, $630 million of which from the US.

Meanwhile at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, James Cameron was asked by Coming Soon about how the sequel's story is progressing. Cameron says "I definitely have a story arc in mind for the second film and even on a very vague base for a third film. That doesn't mean we'll do a third film - it doesn't mean we'll stop at a third film. We'll just have to see where it goes."

The other big question of course, will it be his next project? "That hasn't been decided yet."

Some information on the Avatar Sequel(s)

James Cameron has briefly hinted at where he plans to take the "Avatar" franchise next in an interview with The Los Angeles Times.

As previously hinted at, we can expect to see more of the other planets in the system where Pandora resides. However that may not be as soon as expected.

Cameron says "We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That's not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film."

So what will the second film focus on? "I've already announced this, so I might as well say it: Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I'm going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won't be a rain forest. I'm not saying we won't see what we've already seen; we'll see more of that as well."

Cameron is presently working on incorporating an additional six minutes to be inserted back into the film for the re-release in August. While the bare-bones 2D version hits DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, the feature rich four-disc Blu-ray/DVD set is scheduled to hit stores in November.

Well it obviously wouldn't have passed that record without the higher ticket prices and everything...

I watched it on DVD the other day on a 50 inch television with surround sound...it was alright. :P
