I'm thinking of putting them in the sticky but want to know what people think first:

 

Deadlines and Game Lengths:

 

These are to some extent left to the mods.

 

However, in the interest of keeping activity up, we need reasonably fast games. At the same time, in the interest of a good game where people don't just resort to random voting, we should have reasonable deadlines. I propose the following rules:

 

 

Standard and Newbie games: First day, 96 hours; all other days 72 hours. 48 hour nights.

 

Theme games: First days at least 96 hours but no longer than a week; all other days at least 72 hours but no longer than a week. Nights between 72 and 48 hours; shorter at the mod's discretion. I propose longer deadlines here because these games tend to have more players.

This variation of Mafia is played with any selection of the following roles only:

Cop

Doctor

One kill only Vig

Symp

You can have any story theme you want, and you don’t have to have all those roles, those are the ones you can have though.

 

Mafia play has moved on, and people have come to see more roles as standard. In particular, there are less Symps, and more Godfathers. There are less Vigs, and more Serial Killers. There are also roles that are interesting and pretty standard that don't appear in this list - like the trackers, watchers, lovers, and cults. Also, nobody wants to mod standard games, since there's no creativity involved in the setup.

 

Proposed Replacement List of Roles:

 

- Cop

- Doc

- Vig

- Symp

- Lovers (win together regardless of alignment, but die if the other dies)

- Serial Killer (solo win, can nightkill)

- Cult recruiter (nb. cult cannot nightkill)

- Godfather (mafia; immune to nightkills and/or cop investigations)

- Tracker

- Watcher

 

Note that there should not be too many killing roles. If there is an SK, there should not be a Vig as well. Also, cop is pretty much the most standard role there is; surely it can be left out in a few games? Vig is an interesting replacement for it - as are trackers and watchers. Cop + tracker is an interesting combinaion, as well, but note that there should not be too many investigative roles in a small game. Cop + tracker needs at least 12 players.

 

Are there any suggestions for roles I've left out here, or disagreements with roles in the list?

 

Also, is there any interest in the idea of a few standard setups for the mod to choose from, in addition to this list? These might be useful for first-time mods.

 


 

Game types:

 

Do we really need to maintain fast and newbie mafia queues? Hardly any of these games are used, and there's no need for newbie mafia on this board that I've seen; newbies tend to jump straight into other games, or play a game in one of the orgs - eg. the WT first.

 

Also, is there any interest in other types of games? I could try modding a few trials of other games.

That seems to be a good list of standard roles as long as people are careful when putting Cults in smaller games.

 

Cutting newbie games is okay by me too.
