Monday Night numbers...

All the big Monday night shows came on line last night, so it’s a good time to stare at those 18-49 ratings:

6.5 House

4.6 Big Bang Theory

4.4 Two and a Half Men

4.3 CSI Miami

4.1 Dancing With The Stars

3.5 How I Met Your Mother

3.2 Accidentally On Purpose

2.7 Heroes

2.3 Castle

1.8 The Jay Leno Show

1.2 One Tree Hill

1.1 Gossip Girl

* Fans have had it with “Heroes,” which took a non-heroic distant fourth place, falling another 46% from its season-three opener.

17 million viewers: “Heroes” second-season premiere

10 million viewers: “Heroes” third-season premiere

6 million viewers: “Heroes” fourth-season premiere

* Last week “The Jay Leno Show” was the highest-rated Monday show on the big four networks. This week it was the lowest.

* “Big Bang Theory” is, at least for the moment, now TV’s top sitcom, up last night 28% from its 2008 premiere

* “House,” up 14% from its 2008 premiere, gave Fox its first-ever opening-night-of-the-fall-season win, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

* Weevil Navarro > Chuck Bass. CW darling “Gossip Girl” pulled 2.1 million total viewers last night, while the final season of the CW’s “Veronica Mars” averaged 2.5 million viewers three seasons back.

* President Barack Obama's appearance on "Letterman" drew 7 million viewers, the biggest audience for "The Late Show" since Dave and Oprah patched things up on air four years ago.

Tuesday Numbers...

All the big Tuesday night shows came on line last night, so it’s a good time to stare at those 18-49 ratings:

4.8 NCIS

4.4 NCIS Los Angeles

3.5 Dancing With The Stars

3.2 Hell’s Kitchen

3.1 The Good Wife

3.1 The Biggest Loser

2.6 The Forgotten

2.5 The Jay Leno Show

1.0 90210

0.8 Melrose Place

* CBS had its most-watched premiere-week Tuesday since 1993, according to the Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd.

* For the second day in a row “The Jay Leno Show” was the lowest-rated primetime show among the big-four networks, though it was up from Monday (thanks probably to lead-in “Biggest Loser” pulling a better number than “Heroes”).

* Mac Mackenzie > Sydney Andrews. “90210” pulled 2 million total viewers last night. “Melrose Place” pulled in 1.4 million viewers, down 20% from its already-weak opening. The final season of the CW’s “Veronica Mars” averaged 2.5 million viewers three seasons back. (The CW just announced they’ve backed up the Brink’s truck to hire Heather Locklear to guest on an upcoming “Melrose.”)

The networks were all finally at full strength with fresh Wednesday episodes last night; the 18-49 scores:

4.3 Modern Family

4.3 Cougar Town

4.2 Criminal Minds

4.0 CSI: NY

3.2 Dancing With The Stars

3.0 Eastwick

3.0 Glee

2.5 Law & Order: SVU

2.5 So You Think You Can Dance

2.4 Gary Unmarried

2.3 Mercy

2.3 The New Adventures of Old Christine

2.0 The Jay Leno Show

1.3 America’s Next Top Model

0.5 The Beautiful Life

* ABC’s “Modern Family,” likely the best-reviewed new show of fall, came out on top for the night alongside slotmate “Cougar Town.” The pair took out a lot of tough competition at the 9 p.m. hour, including “Criminal Minds,” “Glee,” and “Law & Order: SVU,” which plummeted a terrifying 34% from its 10 p.m. 2008 premiere.

* In the sitcom realm, only Monday’s “Big Bang Theory” (4.6) and “Two and a Half Men” (4.4) have pulled higher numbers than “Modern” and “Cougar” this autumn.

* “SVU” has been the strongest of the “Law & Orders” for years now and was, if I remember correctly, NBC’s top-rated scripted show at the end of last season. Could this fourth-place finish finally signal the end of the 20-year-old franchise on broadcast television?

* “Mercy” debuted in the lower middle of the 8 p.m. pack, ahead of “Top Model” and “Old Christine” but behind “Gary Unmarried” and the two dance shows.

* “Leno’s” number, better than Monday but weaker than Tuesday, left him for the third night in a row the weakest of the big-four shows.

* “The Beautiful Life” drew an abyssmal 1.1 million viewers, compared to the 2.5 million “Veronica Mars” averaged during its final year three seasons ago.

It beat SYTYCD.  I think it is strong enough to make it through the season though.

I watched half of Cougar Town before deleting it.  It wasn't awful... it just felt like Monica had her own show and it bothered me.  But I am sure the ladies love this show and it will be strong.

Eastwick is something I plan to watch tonight.

Modern Family I hope is on demand.

Eastwick is just meh for me. I love Jaime Ray Newman from her stint on Eureka but she looks extremely odd in the nurse outfit. The reporter lady also reminds me of a nerdy Lana Lane(=hot (Though she should keep her hair tied back/up)).

Heroes, and ANTM's positions don't surprise me.  I am confused about Castle being as low as it is.  I figured it would rank near the highest.  What else was it against other than Jay Leno?  SYTYCD is only in auditions stage right now, so hopefully it will pick up steam, however, it's up against some heavy competition on both nights.  It will be interesting to see how it pans out ratings-wise once it gets going.

Just finally saw Eastwick.  It's Meh.  Will definately remain in my Hulu subscription because I'm interested in where it goes, but I ultimately see it going the way of Desperate Housewives to nothing more than a prime time soap.  I think the story is much more successful as a movie.

I have been avoiding Cougartown because I figured I would hate it.  I'm not a big fan of glorifying the Cougar.  But I pretty much just laughed my ass off.  Courtney Cox's character is a total neurotic silly mess and I Love it!  It'll stay on my Hulu subscriptions rather than switching to live view because it is opposite Glee.

And the first cancellation of the year is...

CW’s “The Beautiful Life: TBL”

Several fall series have yet to debut but the CW’s “The Beautiful Life: TBL” is already dead, victim of hideous ratings, after airing just two episodes.

Not even the last-minute addition of its title’s texting-friendly acronym appendage could save it. Now we’ll never learn if male model Chris will be able to fend off the creepy homosexual agents long enough to have sex with fellow model Raina!

The modeling-business drama, co-created by former model Ashton Kutcher, will be replaced by repeats of another poorly rated CW drama, “Melrose Place.”

Look! Press release!

    A “ MELROSE PLACE ” TIMESHARE:

ENCORE EPISODES WILL AIR WEDNESDAY NIGHTS ON THE CW

September 25, 2009 (Burbank, CA) ─ The CW Network will begin airing encore episodes of the new drama MELROSE PLACE in the 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET timeslot on Wednesday nights, beginning September 30.

Following is The CW’s revised schedule:

    8:00-9:00 p.m. “ONE TREE HILL”

    9:00-10:00 p.m. “GOSSIP GIRL”

    Tuesday

    8:00-9:00 p.m. “90210”

    9:00-10:00 p.m. “ MELROSE PLACE ”

Thursday Ratings...

The networks were all finally at full strength with fresh episodes Thursday night; the 18-49 scores (last week’s scores are in the parentheses):

6.6 (1.8) Grey’s Anatomy

4.1 (---) FlashForward

4.0 (2.0) CSI

3.8 (4.1) The Office

3.7 (3.6) Survivor

3.4 (1.9) The Mentalist

2.8 (3.8) Community

2.7 (3.2) Bones

2.2 (3.1) Fringe

1.8 (2.0) SNL Thursday

1.8 (2.1) Parks and Recreation

1.7 (2.7) The Jay Leno Show

1.7 (1.6) The Vampire Diaries

1.2 (1.2) Supernatural

* An episode of scripted television (like the “FlashForward” pilot) beating an original episode of “Survivor” at 8 p.m. Thursday is extremely rare. I think the “Ugly Betty” pilot may have marked the last time.

* “Survivor” and “Vampire Diaries” both increased their numbers slightly at 8 p.m. hour despite the arrival of “FastForward.”

* “CSI” was down a crazy 44% from its 2008 premiere. The newer “Grey’s Anatomy” was down only 11%.

* “Community” and “Fringe” both took big second-week dips, down 26% and 23%, respectively.

* “The Jay Leno Show” hit its series low Thursday to tie with the CW’s “Vampire Diaries.” Somebody predicted “Leno” could still make $300 million annually with a 1.5 rating, so I guess we’ll be seeing more of the same in primetime?

Friday Ratings....

Many premieres hit Friday; the 18-49 scores:

2.3 20/20

2.2 Ghost Whisperer

2.0 Medium

1.7 Numbers

1.5 Dateline

1.5 The Jay Leno Show

1.5 Modern Family ®

1.5 Cougar Town ®

1.4 FlashForward ®

1.3 Law & Order

1.0 Brothers

1.0 Dollhouse

1.0 Smallville

* Fridays = Kryptonite! All the premieres were down down down from their previous-season premieres, and the biggest dip came for “Smallville” at 45%.

* “Dollhouse” was down 41% from its premiere last February, but about even from its first-season finale in May.

* “Medium,” which jumped to Fridays from whole other network, fell 33%

* Good news and bad news for “Leno”: it hit its lowest score to date but finally beat some big-four shows.

* The only NBC show “Leno” beat this week was “Law & Order,” which launched its milestone 20th season at 8 p.m. last night. It was down 41% from its launch last November and couldn't even top ABC's "FlashForward" repeat. Looks like it may not beat “Gunsmoke” after all!

Posted

Even though Dollhouse's rating her horrid on Friday nights, it had one of the best rated DVR and Hulu watches...I think it's just because its on Friday night at 9 that it does so poorly in ratings.

I don't think FlashForward is going to keep that spot--I watched it and didn't love it. I think that it will drop next week.

I really liked Flash Forward though it defintely needs some work. I'm a Hulu Dollhouse watcher as well, in fact I watch most of my shows on Hulu. Hard to watch my shows here otherwise. Didn't like Eastwick much at all, not sure why I really like the actress who plays the reporter but it was a big fat MEH. Not wasting my time on it.

Anybody watch The Forgotten? I liked it but I want to see more to verify.

Posted

I caught The Forgotten.  And I'm prepared to like it enough to keep tuning in.  There's nothing else in that time slot other than Flipping Out, which is funny, but is admittedly the kind of guilty pleasure I would Much rather replace with something else.  It's kind of middle of the road for me, but I sure do love Christian Slater, so that kind of settles it.

Lots of season premieres Sunday! The 18-49 numbers:

5.6 Colts at Cardinals

5.2 Family Guy

4.9 The Cleveland Show

4.5 Desperate Housewives

4.2 The Simpsons

3.6 American Dad

3.3 60 Minutes

3.2 The Amazing Race

3.1 Extreme Makeover (8pm)

3.0 Brothers & Sisters

2.1 Extreme Makeover (7pm)

1.9 Cold Case

* The debut of “Family Guy” spin-off “The Cleveland Show” brought in 1.2 million more viewers than the Seth Rogen-penned 21st season premiere of “The Simpsons.”

* “Desperate Housewives” and “Brothers & Sisters” fell 37% and 35%, respectively, from their 2008 premieres.

* “Cold Case” hid in the night's ratings cellar, down 33% from its 2008 premiere.

* “Family Guy” and “American Dad” were up 16% and 13%, respectively, from their 2008 premieres.

Only two premieres, of “Trauma” and “Lie To Me,” last night. The 18-49 rankings (last week in parentheses):

5.7 (6.5) House

5.1 (4.6) Big Bang Theory

4.7 (4.4) Two and a Half Men

4.1 (4.3) CSI: New York

3.6 (4.1) Dancing With The Stars

3.6 (3.5) How I Met Your Mother

3.1 (3.2) Accidentally On Purpose

2.9 (----) Lie To Me

2.3 (2.3) Castle

2.3 (----) Trauma

2.3 (2.7) Heroes

1.8 (1.8) The Jay Leno Show

1.2 (1.2) One Tree Hill

1.2 (1.1) Gossip Girl

* “Big Bang Theory” hit its best number yet.

* “Heroes” looks like it’ll soon be grounded.

* “Lie To Me” lost almost half the audience of “House,” its Fox lead-in. It was down 44% from its January premiere. Fox pays Tim Roth a weekly fortune for this series.

* “Trauma,” with its helicopter crashes and freeway mayhem, opened weak but still pulled better numbers than NBC’s other Monday-night shows, “Heroes” and “Jay Leno.”

“So You Think You Can Dance” and “Shark Tank” returned to Tuesday on a rare late-September weeknight without any real premieres. The 18-49 rankings (last week in parentheses):

4.6 (4.8) NCIS

4.1 (4.4) NCIS Los Angeles

3.6 (3.1) The Biggest Loser

3.1 (3.1) The Good Wife

3.1 (3.2) Hell’s Kitchen

2.6 (3.5) Dancing With The Stars

2.4 (----) So You Think You Can Dance

2.3 (2.5) The Jay Leno Show

2.0 (2.6) The Forgotten

1.5 (----) Shark Tank

1.2 (1.0) 90210

0.8 (0.8) Melrose Place

* CBS now owns Tuesday night with “The Good Wife” and its two JAGverse shows putting it at #1 in all timeslots.

* “Jay Leno” beat the second episode of “Forgotten,” suggesting the Christian Slater procedural will soon join “Justice,” “Just Legal,” “E-Ring,” “Modern Men,” “Skin,” “Close To Home” and “Soldier of Fortune Inc.” as one of the shorter-lived Jerry Bruckheimer TV productions. (With the cancellation of “Without A Trace” and “Eleventh Hour” and big ratings declines for “CSI,” “CSI: Miami” and “Cold Case,” Bruckheimer is having a tough year.)

* “Dancing With The Stars” fell a mammoth 26% from last week while its timeslot competition, “The Biggest Loser,” rose 16%.

Wed's ratings (let me know if you guys like this thread... I personally eat this stuff up)

The 18-49 ratings; last week’s in parentheses:

3.7 (4.3) Modern Family

3.6 (4.2) Criminal Minds

3.6 (4.3) Cougar Town

3.2 (4.0) CSI: NY

3.2 (3.0) Glee

2.7 (2.5) So You Think You Can Dance

2.5 (----) The Middle

2.4 (2.5) Law & Order: SVU

2.4 (3.0) Eastwick

2.3 (2.4) Gary Unmarried

2.2 (----) Hank

2.1 (2.3) Mercy

2.0 (2.3) Old Christine

1.9 (2.0) The Jay Leno Show

1.5 (1.3) America’s Next Top Model

0.5 (----) Melrose Place ®

* Debuts for ABC’s “The Middle” and “Hank” were much less impressive than those for “Modern Family” and “Cougar Town” last week, though both beat the CBS sitcoms in their timeslots.

* Though “Modern Family” was again Wednesday’s most-watched show among those aged 18-49, “Criminal Minds” again won the night in terms of (13.6 million) total viewers.

* “CSI: NY” suffered a 20% drop from the prior Wednesday, but still managed to trounce lame competition in “Eastwick” and “The Jay Leno Show.”

* “Eastwick” tied “CSI” for worst second-week Wednesday drop at 20%. (Everything fell at the 10 p.m. hour.) “Cougar Town” and “Criminal Minds” both fell 18%.

* “Glee” finally reversed its downward trend. Its lead in, “So You Think You Can Dance,” was up as well.

18-49 sitcom rankings currently (most recent airings):

5.2 Family Guy

5.1 Big Bang Theory

4.9 The Cleveland Show

4.7 Two and a Half Men

4.2 The Simpsons

3.8 The Office

3.7 Modern Family

3.6 American Dad

3.6 Cougar Town

3.6 How I Met Your Mother

3.1 Accidentally on Purpose

2.8 Community

2.5 The Middle

2.3 Gary Unmarried

2.2 Hank

2.0 Old Christine

1.8 Parks and Recreation

1.0 Brothers

I also enjoy reading these. I'm glad that Glee rose in viewers--though I think that they did really well in their teaser previews and song choices.

I'm a die hard Biggest Loser fan, and this year there is some mayja drama going down with a batsh!t crazy lady on there. So I'm glad their ratings continue to be steady.

I don't watch all those criminal shows. Are they really that good? Yikes, it just seems like there is total overkill with those shows. I still have to check out Modern Family, and Cougar Town.

No more premieres! Thursday 18-49 scores (previous weeks in parentheses):

6.0 (6.6) (1.8) Grey’s Anatomy

4.5 (----) (----) Private Practice

4.0 (4.0) (2.0) CSI

3.7 (3.4) (1.9) The Mentalist

3.7 (3.7) (3.6) Survivor

3.7 (4.1) (----) FlashForward

3.7 (3.8) (4.1) The Office

2.9 (2.8) (3.8) Community

2.6 (2.7) (3.2) Bones

2.3 (2.2) (3.1) Fringe

1.9 (1.8) (2.1) Parks and Recreation

1.8 (1.8) (2.0) SNL Thursday

1.6 (1.7) (2.7) The Jay Leno Show

1.6 (1.7) (1.6) The Vampire Diaries

1.2 (1.2) (1.2) Supernatural

Figures in grey are for repeats.

* While “Fringe” finally stopped a precipitous slide (it was the only 9 p.m. show that gained this week), “Mentalist” suffered a surprisingly decisive loss in its first bout with “Private Practice.” “Mentalist” and “Fringe” were last season’s top new shows, but they are struggling since their moves to super-competitive Thursday.

* No show in memory has beaten a new Thursday “Survivor” two weeks in a row, and ABC’s terrible “FlashForward” didn’t either; it fell 8% to tie the CBS reality show in 18-49 for first place. (“Survivor” won in total viewers.)

* “Parks and Recreation” was the only series to show an increase in last night’s first primetime hour.

* Even though it didn’t have to take on “Grey’s” this week, “Leno” hit its lowest Thursday number yet. For the second Thursday in a row it came perilously close to falling behind The CW’s “Vampire Diaries” among 18-49 viewers.
