Why did Masema go to Malden and lose most of his followers?

It makes no sense to me - why did Masema join with Perrin and Tylin, leading 20K of his followers to death? He's lost the majority of them now and what did he gain? What did he hope to gain? Aram failed to kill Perrin but Masema didn't have to join with Perrin for Aram to have a chance to kill him.....

I dunno - he was sane enough to realise that the safest place for him was near Perrin - he left the rest of his followers at a different location and look what happened to them - a rational decision on that front I would say.

The insane card is a bit too easy to use.....reading other threads there's talk he's being led or used by others, (forsaken, Aes Sedai etc)...even if this is the case I still don't see a reason for his going.

I go back to insanity because no other reason seems to make sense.  It might be that he's being used by another force (forsaken perhaps), but nothing in the text supports that.

Right now he's a complete enigma, at least in so far as what we know as a the reader.  Anyone else have any info about this Moorz or I are unaware of?

Could be a number of reasons.

Masemas old hatred for Aiel flaring up, so he wants to be in on the action.

Being close to Aram in case the hit on Perrin would have been successful. Aram would be quite dangerous to Masema if he had survived, since he could bring up Masemas role if he was questioned.

Lessee - he's been secretly meeting with Aes Sedai who may ( or may not ) be Black Ajah.  He is found to be in possession of a safe conduct/special gold star from Suroth who is Semi's puppet.  The very writ of authority that Perrin uses to command the release of the forkroot.

There's ample reason to suspect his actions ( whether knowingly or not ) served some deep plan of the Dark.

That's assuming it was him he was there to meet. Selame's people never saw them meet, just that Masuri and Annoura were in the camp.
