The Alviarin/Shaidar Haran connection

I have some questions about the relationship between Shaidar Haran and Alviarin...

#1 why did Shaidar Haran, the hand of the DO, mark her for protection when he allowed Liandrin, Moghedien, and Cyndane to be used/abused by other forsaken, and he himself punished Mesaana?

#2 Since there are other dark sisters, as well as at least one forsaken, still in the tower why does Shaidar Haran fixate so upon Alviarin. She should be just a tool to be used; but apparantly she is special somehow ?

#3 Despite her many failures Alviarin has not been punished by the DO or the forsaken in any significant manner, other than the standard threats and enforced groveling. She should have been dealt with the minute her failure rendered her ueless. Why is she so useful to the Shadow that the Hand of the DO took personal interest in her protection ???

i have no preconceived notions here... just looking for some thoughts and opinions... :)

I wouldnt really say she failed. Her task was to plant suspicion and harm the WT from the inside. I would say she did really well there. The Ajahs dont cooperate and are on the brink of comming to blows. Her only major failure is to loose the influence she had over Elaida.

SH flat out states why Alviarin gets to live, as she gets the task of rooting out those who are tasked with rooting out the BA. And the mark was necessary to keep Mesaana from having her killed as soon as SH left the building.

i know this. but he didnt need her and yet has gone out of his way to protect her. from the DO point of view she is a useless tool and should be discarded. any of the other BA sisters and/or mesaana could have performed the task.

Alviarin already knows much of what goes on in the Tower. From the Great Lords PoV she is far from useless; manipulating the Amyrlin Seat is no easy feat, and someone capable of doing so on such a level of success as Alviarin did without being found out definitely has their uses. Of course, any female Chosen/Black Ajah would be good for the job, bu why should any other Black Ajah get the chance at something like this, when Alviarin has already proved herself?

Useless? Except for getting fired as Keeper, she has done quite a good job. Mesaana admits that Alviarin has been useful, and that it will be a shame to kill her (Keep in mind that Mesaana wants to kill Alviarin for having seen er real face, not because she got fired), and SH says that Alviarin can still be useful, by having her protect the BA.

Also, keep in mind that the DO have quite limited resources when it comes to channelers. After all, he even recycled Lanfear, whose loyalty was highly questionable, to put it mildly. Killing channelers for no real reason is not in the DOs best interest.
