I gotta stick with Hark The Herald.......

Not that any who know me would guess (being the devout Heathen I am) but I was raised a Wesleyan... A Methodist ... And John Wesleys' brother Charley (my own brother is a Charles) wrote a somber and solemn song back in 1739. A hundred years later a dude named Cummings adapted music by Mendelssohn to Chucks tune and that's how I heard and loved it as a kid in my little Methodist Church. What better words to hail the birth of a King.

Hark the herald angels sing

"Glory to the newborn King!

Peace on earth and mercy mild

God and sinners reconciled"

Joyful, all ye nations rise

Join the triumph of the skies

With the angelic host proclaim:

"Christ is born in Bethlehem"

Hark! The herald angels sing

"Glory to the newborn King!"

(plus its my favorite carol to satirize as Twinnie and Tay know too well along with Deck The Halls)

As for the third and fourth place ... O' Little Town of Bethlehem gets my vote .. Even though it was a hotbed of dissension against Herod and not most westerners image of a sleepy snow covered village in a quiet star lit valley, it's still a lovely song.

*nods*  Charles Wesley wrote some very good hymns.  :)

  • 2 weeks later...

And the final results are as follows:

Winning by 4 votes to 2 (and making me very, very upset), Hark the Herald Angels Sing beats O Come All Ye Faithful to win the inaugral "Christmas Carol - It's a Knockout).

And taking third place, it is O Little Town of Bethlehem, which beat Once in a Royal David's City by 5 votes to 1.

Thanks to everyone who voted and took part!

And the answer is 'yes'. I've sort of ignored the radio for 2008, but I will use the chart of the biggest selling singles for 2008 in the UK for this event. It will probably start tomorrow, and I am toying if it will be an one or two week competition at the moment. Also, expect similar weekly threads like this for individual artists as well.
