The sun was setting over the mountain. A shadow crept up the mountain. No, more than a shadow. A man. A youth in colors to make one’s eyes sore crawled up the mountain, his hands sore and his body covered in dirt. The occasional scrape was on his face and he knew he had bruises all over his body. It had been along trek from the wagons, and the terrain was unforgiving. The food he had taken with him had depleted a few days ago. Now he was left to scrounge for edible plants and roots. He was hungry, tired, beaten, and frustrated.

He hadn’t heard from the wolves since he left, but he could tell they were there. He had no idea how he could tell, but they were definitely there. The same ones as before. It almost felt like they were shepherding him.

A smooth rock nearby looked slightly comfortable, so Seth made his way over there. He tested it out, and he was right. The rock did fit his shape quite well. This would be his camp for the night. He put down his bag and set out to look for some dry wood to make a fire.

A hemlock had fallen and was rotting, but the branches were dry and perfect for starting fires. Seth collected them up and got up to take them back to his campsite. He stopped. Was that movement? He stood as still as a statue. There was movement. Up in the trees just above him. Golden eyes greeted him. Was this who the wolves sent him to see? He waited as he stared at the guest.

~ I did no such thing! ~ Lorelai exclaimed.

~ Did to ~

~ Did not! ~

Nightfall gave her a challenging look.

~ Fine fine. Yes, I ate the last piece of dried meat. But you're a wolf. You got the hunting thing going on, don't you? ~

Nightfall's eyes shone dangerously.

~ What? I was terribly hungry. If I didn't nourish myself I wouldn't have made it. Would you have wanted that on your conscious? Would you? ~

Lorelai started laughing. She never did learn what Nightfall had to say because they both realized that the person they were looking for was close by. And there he was. But a few feet away, staring right as them.

~ So much for a desecrate arrival, ey Nightfall? ~ Lorelai winked at Nightfall but she ignored her and stayed behind, as to not to startle the wanderer. Lorelai planted herself in front of the boy and eyed him for a moment. "Hello, my name is Lorelai. I will be your escort this evening. And may I say, that's quite an outfit."

"Hello, my name is Lorelai. I will be your escort this evening. And may I say, that's quite an outfit."

Seth blinked. Escort? Was this who the wolves wanted him to go see? He looked closer, and her eyes were golden like his had recently become. There were others like him? Did she talk to wolves, too?

“Umm, my name is Seth. Wolves told me to come here.” He was suddenly very conscious of his bright apparel and how it stood out. “Ah, yeah. I’m of the Tuathe’an. I’ll be right back.” He quickly dashed off to collect his few meager belongings and then retuned to the woman who was still there. He followed her, and was suddenly aware of a wolf, a close one. “Why can I tell there is a wolf here? What are you? Will I be turning into what you are? Where are we?” He was not one to ramble, but he had so many questions, that he couldn’t contain his inquisitive feelings.

"Why can I tell there is a wolf here? What are you? Will I be turning into what you are? Where are we?". Lorelai could do nothing but laugh at the wave of questions that Seth blabbered. Lorelai raised one finger at a time as she spoke. "One, you can tell there is a wolf here because there is one. Two, I am nothing but a woman with gorgeous eyes. Three, You are who you are. Golden eyes won't change that. Four, we are just people with special abilities. We're the Wolkin." The boy looked at her wide eyed, no doubt dumbstruck by her words. A certain sense of amusement engulfed her as she signaled him to follow her.

"We have a long journey back home, Seth. We might as well start at it. As for Nightfall, you have nothing to fear. She will probably appear later with food. She just loves to take credit for hunting.

~ I heard that ~

~ You know it to be true, Nightfall. Now off you go. I'd like a plump rabbit by nightfall ~

Lorelai grinned widely at Seth. "So, a tinker in our midst. Tell me, how did your family react to the color of your eyes?". For once, Lorelai was indeed intrigued. The Tinkers were known to be peaceful folk. Lorelai would have thought that they'd be more willing to accept someone different. But nothing was certain. And even the most understanding of all could err.

Wolfkin. Seth turned the word over and over in her head. Wolfkin. The kin of a wolf. Wolfbrother? Very curious. Lorelai looked amused. His eyes must be wide. She signaled, and he followed. She started talking about Nightfall, the wolf. Hunting? Was the wolf going to bring him food? For some reason, that seemed like the strangest, yet most exciting idea he had ever heard.

"So, a tinker in our midst. Tell me, how did your family react to the color of your eyes?".

"Well, they don't really know. They noticed heightened senses, so they started drugging me. The night my eyes started glowing, the night two wolves told me to come here, only one person saw me. I told him it was a side effect of something. Then I ran."

"So did you name the wolf? It's a very nice name."

Lorelai smiled. "Oh, no. If I were to name Nightfall, I believe some other names would have came up. She'd be called Droopy. or Cranky. Or PuffyTail. Or something clever. Like... Duck." Nightfall appeared from behind a bush and dropped two plump bunnies briskly on the ground.

~ I heard that ~

Lorelai examined Nightfall's findings. "Impressive. Well, we might as well make camp for the day. We'll continue on tomorrow. We've made some way at least. And I suppose that's something. Go fetch some wood, Seth. I'll make us a good meal. And afterwards we can have some tea. Yes. Don't listen to what they say. Tea isn't girly. It's gooooooood. And you can ask whatever's on your mind. Maybe it'll ease you a bit to know the life you're going to lead."

Lorelai drew out a knife and started skinning the bunnies. Looking to the side, she realized Seth was still standing there. "Go on Seth, chop chop."

Seth laughed. Lorelai was funny. Imagine! Naming a wolf "Duck"! He just laughed. But now, firewood was needed. He turned to go, then Lorelai made a comment about how tea wasn't girly. Since when was tea girly? Who said that? Tea isn't girly. Loelai looked at him from whatever she was doing to the rabbits the wolf brought. They were eating food caught by a wolf? Now that was something to write home about. "Go on Seth, chop chop." He snapped back to the world and scurried away to find wood. It shouldn't be hard in a forest.

He came back with a big armful of nice dry wood. "Here you are. Would you like me to light the fire?"

"Well, it's not going to start itself now, is it?". Lorelai winked and continued with her work. She put both bunnies on a spit, while Seth started the fire. When he was done, she managed to place the spit a reasonable distance away from the fire, using some stones.

"Well, now comes the sad part of us waiting for the food to cook. But in the meanwhile, why don't you tell me a bit about yourself. About your life as a tinker. I've always found them to be very intriguing. Unless it pains you to speak of it. I understand if it does." Lorelai gave Seth a warm smile, while awaiting a response.

The fire was going quite well and Lorelai had set the rabbits up on a spit. He wasn't sure how he would like a meal of only meat. Whenever he had meat before, it was always with a good helping of fresh veggies or a bowl of fruit. But it did smell good.

"Life as a Tinker? There isn't really a lot to it. We wander the world looking for the song. No one had found it yet, though. I'm starting to wonder if the song still exists. I've thought it was the song the Ogier sing to trees, but the elders said it's not. If that's not it, I don't think it exists." He paused to put another stick on the fire. "Other than that, we do little else. We like to sing and dance and play instruments. I particularily like to dance. And I'm sure you know that we abstain from violence and we mend pots. That's about it for me." He paused and thought a bit. "In my dream, the wolves called me Leaf Dancer. What does Nightfall know about me?" he said motioning to the great beast.

"In my dream, the wolves called me Leaf Dancer. What does Nightfall know about me?" he said motioning to the great beast. Lorelai laughed. "Who knows, wolves gossip until the end of the world and back. But, Mostly we received information of your existence and whereabouts."

Lorelai stroked Nightfall's back gently and grinned at Seth. "She's very spoiled, this one. If I don't give her enough attention, she grows cranky. And you can imagine how tiring a cranky wolf can be, not to mention how deadly." Seth's eyes grew as wide as tea cups. Lorelai chuckled. "Wolves are very gentle creatures. They just have terrible public relations."

~ You're talking about me, aren't you? ~

~ Of course not, Nightfall. I resent that implication ~

~ You're smiling too much, black cub ~

~ You're being paranoid ~  Lorelai gave Nightfall a rough pat on her back.

"Are you two...talking right now?", Seth asked, curiosity evident in his scent. "Well, I am. She's just yammering. Sometimes I wonder where her off button is. I tell you, constant chatter!". Nightfall grunted, as if hearing her, which only made Lorelai's smile grow wider. Sometimes she was shocked on how well Nightfall knew her.

"Well, after we eat, it's straight to bed, young man! We'll set out first thing in the morning and we'll be back home in no time."
