Appearance: 4’9 feet (1m50), 125 pounds (57kg), cashew brown hair cut short to the shoulders and held back by a pin, dark brown eyes

Personality: a girly girl, Lenia is a dreamer, who thinks reality is far too dull for her taste. She’s also very gullible, very superstitious and easily manipulated.

Strengths/Weaknesses: she has a beautiful singing voice and is quite artistic with paints and needlework, but lacks the discipline to become great at any of her given talents. She’s rather lazy and easily bored.

Character History:

“He will come on his black stallion and sweep me off the ground and ride off with me to his palace where there will be a banquet in my honor with fifty da’covale serving only me.” Lenia’s voice had gotten the dreamy sound it always did when she was off on one of her ‘My Prince and Me’ stories. Her friends payed no attention to her and only her best friend hmmhmm’d from time to time to indicate she was still listening. Lenia wasn’t bothered by this lack of interest, in fact she didn’t even notice it. Lost as she was in her fantasy, imagining the day her head would be shaved as one of the Blood and her fingers lacquered in the color of her Prince’s House.

They were sitting on the green in front of her parent’s house, eating sweetcakes and drinking sugarwater when all of a sudden a group of seven horses approached. A Der’Sul’dam and two regular Sul’dam with four soldiers escorting them. The children got to their feet, but kept silent, showing proper respect to the Der’Sul’dam and her company. They couldn’t help but gawking at the two damane that were walking next to the Sul’dam’s horses though. You didn’t often see those around these parts. Lenia wrinkled her nose, watching the grey cladded women pass by. She quickly made a gesture to fence off evil. Her mother had explained to her the way of the damane, but she still couldn’t help feeling they’d all be better off if they just killed them. If one of those leashes broke… She shivered, just thinking about it and repeated the gesture.

Her parents were standing in front of the house as the party stopped before them and dismounted. They welcomed the Der’Sul’dam inside, while the soldiers tended to the horses and the Sul’dam took the damane off to sit on the benches on the patio. Lenia thought she had to make sure those benches were properly cleaned after they were gone. The children sat back down on the grass and resumed their eating and drinking, wildly speculating as to the purpose of the visit and whether or not the damane would burst in to flames right before their eyes. Lenia smiled at their ignorance. Everyone knew that damane don’t burst into flames during the daylight! Lantha had been very clear on that, and he could know, he lived in a city that had plenty of damane in it.

A few moments later, the Der’Sul’dam and her parents emerged from the house again and the Sul’dam and damane got to their feet. Lenia’s mother motioned her over and she felt her heart skip a beat. Did they come on the command of a handsome Lord who had seen her at the market place and fell madly in love with her? Of course a Lord wouldn’t come himself, but to send such a distinguished person as a Sul’dam is quite an honor. Her heart fluttering, she gathered her skirts and hastened over to her mother, working her lips to form a pretty looking smile while keeping her eyes modestly downcast.

“Lenia, this is Der’Suldam Menala. You will follow her instructions precisely, child.” Her mother said with a crisp voice that brooked no nonsense. Her mother didn’t really care much for her daughter, always with her head in the clowds. She was a practical person herself. Life was no place for dreams, she felt.

“Yes, mother.” Lenia answered softly.

The Der’Sul’dam didn’t say a word, but gestured to one of the Sul’dam who came forward with her damane. She handed a silvery collar to the Der’Sul’dam who put on the bracelet that was linked to it by a silvery leash. Lenia watched in silence, not quite understanding what was going on. Surely they would not test her again? Or maybe it was just a precaution, the last hurdle to take before they would take her to her Prince. After all, he couldn’t be too careful in who he picked for his wife. She helpfully raised her hair as the Der’Sul’dam reached forward to clasp the collar around her neck and then waited. Suddenly she gasped. An icecold trickle of water ran down the spine of her back! Her hand reached up behind her to find the water, but there was none.

“You are no longer Lenia from this household,” the Der’Sul’dam said, speaking to her for the first time. “You are now Lenia, the damane, in the service of the Empress, may She live forever.”

Lenia stood there, dumbfounded, not registering what had happened. Were they going to take her to her Prince collared? Is this his idea of a joke? Her eyes searched and found her mother, who recoiled from her as though she were a poisonous snake. Her parents both stepped back as far as they could, not looking at her again, clearly waiting eagerly for them to be off. ‘Well, if that’s how they want to be. See if I honor them once I am of the Blood!” Lenia thought, putting her nose up and turning her back to her parents. Menala had observed her newest damane’s reactions carefully and quickly realised what was going on in the girl’s mind.

‘Yes,’ She thought, ‘This one will need some work. May have to start by giving her a new name.’
