  1. The sounds of rustling leaves mixed with that of creaking leather and clinking metal. That combined with the numerous conversations and laughter brought Grisham back to his days as a merchant's guard. It was good to be traveling again, good to be out of the city. The air in cities became stale in his opinion.

Despite being involved in several conversations along the way Grisham was ever vigilant. His eyes scanned the forest on either side of the path they followed. One never knew when a group of bandits or the like would decide it was worth the risk of attacking a well armed group. Well armed groups usually had something worth stealing. One might think that the uniforms of Tower Guards or the color shifting cloaks of warders would be enough of a deterrent but some were foolish enough to oppose the White Tower.

A few hours after leaving the riverbank they were called to a halt and told to make camp. The area looked well used by travellers. It was a sizable clearing in the forest of oaks with a stream a few spans wide nearby. Suitable locations for campsites were not always easy to find, another thing he learned as a merchant's guard. Fortunately for their group Jasen appeared to know the area well.

Grisham tended to his mount then headed out to gather wood for their fires. He wanted to eat and rest a bit before it was his turn on watch, he had the second shift tonight. Maybe there would be time for a few games of dice as well.

  2. Grisham did not recognize the Aes Sedai that spoke for him. Then again he only knew a handful of Aes Sedai enough for them to speak on his behalf, none of which could attend the ceremony. Aside from that he recognized only a dozen other Aes Sedai just from their frequent visits to the yards either watching their warders train or seeking one to bond. Had he not been so nervous he might have thought on the irony of this part of the ceremony.

Another question was asked and he heard Jaks voice in reply though the words were lost on him.

"Who would witness your oath whose word is beyond question?" This time he heard Commander Mia's words clearly then waited to see who would respond.

Apparently it was the Aes Sedai's turn to speak for him again. She nodded, her dark blue eyes piercing his. "I will” Her firm voice replied gripping him like a vise. He felt as if she were looking deep into his soul gauging his worth. Light, were all Aes Sedai taught that look? He could do nothing but continue to meet her eyes until she she was finished with her assessment or until the Commander spoke again giving him reason to break contact.

It felt like an eternity before the Commander's voice rang out again.

Commander Mia spoke clearly seeming to emphasize each word "Do you understand that once pledged you are forever bound to a rule of defense? Defense of all Aes Sedai, the defence of the White Tower?"

"Do you understand that once pledged you are forever bound to a rule of obedience? Obedience to your officers, obedience to all Aes Sedai?"

"Do you understand that once pledged you are forever bound to a rule of commitment? Commitment to serving faithfully, commitment despite any adversity?"

Grisham replied yes after each of the Commander's questions feeling the weight of the immense duty he was agreeing to.

Commander Mia gave the order "Then give your oath now."

Grisham spoke loud and firm, his deep gruff voice filling the glade "I swear by the light and my hope of salvation and rebirth, as a Tower Guard to defend the White Tower and all who call it home."

"I swear by the light and my hope of salvation and rebirth, as a Tower Guard to serve faithfully for as long as the White Tower requires me."

"I swear by the light and my hope of salvation and rebirth, as a Tower Guard to fight the shadow and uphold the light until my dying day." Grisham made certain all his words were clear and precise.

Commander Mia nodded then spoke aloud "We welcome you to the Tower Guard, you that were known once as Grisham Elmaren of Far Madding." The blue-eyed Aes Sedai glided forward with a regal bearing the likes of which he had never seen before. She had the crimson cloak of the Tower Guard in hand. She placed it on Grisham, fixing the clasp. Grisham nodded respectfully to the Aes Sedai who still seemed to be unsure of his character. Unsure whether or not he was worthy of serving the White Tower and her sisters.

"We welcome you as Grisham Elmaren of the Tower Guard, our brother in arms. Rise and stand as one among many." The Commander spoke. Grisham rose as Jaks stepped forward presenting Grisham with a long beautifully crafted dagger.

"You came to us unarmed, and as our mark of trust we place this steel in your hand. May you keep it as a symbol of the trust that has been placed in you, and may it serve you well." Grisham nodded to Jaks and his friend flashed a smile.

The Commander walked around the stone slab to the right and approached Grisham placing her left hand on his left shoulder before speaking. "Spare a moment for those who have come before you and to who you have become, as shall those who follow you." After speaking the words that concluded the ceremony, Commander Mia led the others from the glade leaving Grisham to his thoughts...

  3. Grisham had just finished cinching the girth on the chestnut gelding as a herd of trainees bustled into the stable kicking up clouds of dust. He put his arm across his face to keep from breathing in the dust to no avail. He began a coughing fit that seemed to last an eternity. As the fit subsided he grabbed the reins of his mount, Ned, who must have been nearly seventeen hands.

The stable hands had chosen his mount well as Grisham was on the larger side than most here. He had grown heavier since coming to the yards much to the amazement of his instructors. With the polished Tower Guard’s armor he was even heavier. He almost felt bad for Ned, though he almost as big as a draft horse. Grisham led the chestnut outside where the air was much clearer. It was still filled with all the scents of a bustling city but at least it was free of dust clouds.

Grisham laughed to himself as he made his way outside. A few weeks ago he was one of those wild-eyed trainees eager to escape the day to day routine. He would have agreed to travel to Shayul Ghul just to do escape the doldrums of training. Even as a Tower Guard with only a few weeks on the walls, he still felt the urge to be away from the city. There was so much of the world he still planned on seeing and this was a perfect opportunity to do so. Only once as a merchant guard had he traveled near Tar Valon, and that was when he decided to stay and train in the yards.

Grisham climbed into the saddle then joined those that were waiting on the trainees. The other Tower Guards and Warders eyed the trainees, some clearly disapproved of their haphazard behavior and others looked on the verge of laughter. Aside from the dust induced coughing fit, Grisham was amongst the latter.

A voice nearby broke the relative silence. "Any idea which direction we'll be going? North or South? East side or West side of the river? Or by which bridge we'll be leaving?" Grisham turned his bulk to find the source of the voice. It was a dark haired trainee who unlike the other trainees appeared ready to ride. He nodded approvingly at the trainee as his low deep voice uttered “I’ve heard we are heading South along the Erinin. Which side or by which bridge I know not.” He shrugged, a bit embarassed that he did not know the answer.

A new voice shouted above the din. “Today, we ride out on a long patrol down the River Erinin. This is may be just a training exercise, but I expect every one of you trainees to hold yourselves as if this were an enemy marching towards Tar Valon. Stick close to those of us who have ridden out before, and learn what you must do to survive. We expect you to maintain the utmost vigilance while we are out on patrol, and we shall not tolerate foolishness. Now ride out!”

Grisham smiled at the trainee then spoke “Looks like the rest of your questions are about to be answered.” He eased on the reins and booted Ned falling in with the others as they made their way from the city.

  4. The walk to the glade was short yet it seemed eternal as he continued to reflect on his childhood and adolescence. He had come far in a relatively short time. His days as a trainee had taught him much though he knew he still had a lot to learn. His journey was about to take a new path, one that would bring him closer to his destiny. He stood straighter with his head held high as he entered the glade.

The Glade of Remembrance was small, surrounded by large oaks and cone-shaped conifers that blocked much of the light. Despite its modest size, it was an auspicious place. This hallowed ground had been used time and again for ceremonial purposes as well as personal reflection. Grisham spotted the small crowd gathered around the stone slab. A divine light seemed to fill the area where the stone sat like an island amidst a vast sea.

A wave of nervousness struck him causing Grisham to seek the void. No he chastised himself, it would not be right he thought to use the void, to dull his emotions. He wanted to experience this moment, feel the raw emotions of the occasion. He let the void slip away instead he focused his attention on the ominous stone slab and what he was required to say.

"I come here unarmed, offering to give myself to the defense of those who serve all." He uttered the words in a strong deep voice that belied what he felt inside.

The Commander's voice pierced the air "Who would speak for you?"

Jaks, his friend raised to Tower Guard just six months prior replied. "I would speak for him, he is fit."

The Commander continued the ceremony asking "Who would trust you?"

Grisham glanced quickly to the left of the Commander as he had no affiliations with any Aes Sedai therefore he had no idea as to who would speak on his behalf.

    Grisham Elmaren

    Soon to be Tower Guard

  5. Grisham had started the day in his usual way since coming to the yards. Morning exercises to build endurance then extensive practice of the sword forms he had been taught. He would work the forms 'til his arms felt like they would fall off. He took his customary meal but today would be different for Grisham for this day he would be raised to a Tower Guard. It was to be a momentous day, the anticipation of this day's events had made for a restless night. Even so Grisham felt awake and full of vigor.

As Grisham ate he reflected on his childhood and the path that led him to the White Tower. At times it struck him as odd that he was training here though he felt as if he belonged. He had a renewed purpose for life. He would not be an insigificant drunkard like his father. He would be a man, a man that commanded respect. He would be a warder. Grisham had seen several Aes Sedai visiting the yards watching prospective warders train. Hopefully he had managed to catch the eye of a few. If not then there was still time do so. There were still more lessons which he needed before he wold be deemed ready.

Mechanically he wiped the bowl with a piece of bread then frowned when he realized the bowl had been wiped clean. He felt as if he could eat another bowl of the fruit filled porridge though he refrained. He needed to fit into his best tunic. All the training had done nothing to make his body leaner. He was definately stronger, more muscular though he was just as stocky if not more so since coming to the yards. Grisham grabbed an apple which he ate as he made his way to his Barracks.

As he approached the barracks he saw a Sergeant of the Tower Guard standing by the doorway. The tall uniformed man shielded his eyes from the sun as one of the trainees pointed at Grisham. As Grisham approached the Sergeant bellowed "Better hurry lad, don't want to keep the Commander waiting." He was late! He stared blankly at the Sergeant. "Hurry along now!" The Sergeant's voice grew louder. Grisham uttered an oath as he threw the apple core on the ground. He ran into the barracks yelling over his shoulder telling the Sergeant informing him that he would be ready in a moment.

Grisham was in such a hurry that he almost strapped on his sword belt. You must go unarmed you fool he chided himself as he tossed the sword belt down. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead as he continued dressing. With the last button done, he wiped his brow then made his way for the door. He half fell through the door into the courtyard for which he received a glare from the Sergeant. "Easy lad!" the Sergeant spoke "clam yourself, try to carry yourself as a Tower Guard!" "Yes Sergeant!" Grisham responded then tugged on his tunic to make sure it was straight before following the Sergeant toward the Glade of Remembrance.

  6. Thanks for the replies! I posted a thread on the Warder Div forums indicating the need for warders so hopefully we can accomodate everyone here that is in need of one.

I also have a Dedicated in BT that is going to bond an AS once he reaches Asha'man. Just need to finish his reqs.

@U4ea, yeah we'll have to think of some mischief for the 2 of them to get into. Kennar needs to get on with his bad self!

  7. hey Sieve,

Yes, we're tracking all nobles from the PSW and we've kind of started off afresh. We will be putting a limit to the amount of major nobles (high seats and the likes) per country in order to insure a continuity and unity throughout the PSW (it makes us all look rather amateuristic if in one RP there is talk of Family X holding the throne, and in another family Y holding the same throne, to give one example).

Minor nobility are less of a problem, so we're not being too fussy about those but we still record them to be thorough.

Returning nobles owners can be reviewed and (if there's room) added on the list. For the vast majority this will make no differene, since the vast majority are not nobles in line for thrones or anything like that.

Since it would be undoable for us to track back all past nobles, we've decided to start new. Which means we've been going by the bio submissions. All Groups Bio Checkers know to ask for a FL CC in case of a noble's mention in a bio and we take it from there. Returning members usually need to re-submit their character but that doesn't need CC'ing. We may have to change this for bio's holding nobility, because we would obviously miss those.

If you can post a link to your noble's bio here, we'll see to adding them.

All nobles can be checked up on on this google sheet: PSW Nobles table

Hope this answers your question.

    Yes it does, thanks!

We are only talking minor nobility. I will post a link as well as break down the info so it can easily be added to the spreadsheet.

  8. Myst,

Didn't want to derail Em's Congrats thread so I'll ask here. Are you tracking all Nobles including those approved prior to you taking over the Freelanders? If so what info do you need and where do you want it sent?

    Thanks!

  9. I recently posted a thread over at the White Tower RP forums to see how many AS are looking for warders. Well long story short, there are several Aes Sedai in need of warders, so much so that there was talk of making NPC ones to fill the need due to the lack of PC warder characters. So if you were looking for a reason to dust off your WY character or create a new one then there you have it.

  10. Sounds good.

I just have one question: I have WS 2 so what can I do, not do, and how best to reflect it in my RP? I looked around and didn't really find what I was looking for. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Might get back if any suggestions pop into my fuzzy noggin. But it seems good to me.

Here is the Weapon Score system

    http://drpsw.wikia.com/wiki/Weapon_Score_System

Unfortunately there is no description for WS 2 but by reading the others I'm sure you can get an idea.
