  1. Just rewatched The Force Awakens.

    I had apparently convinced myself that it wasn't that bad.  But now I remember that it is.  It's awful.  Truly awful.  I hate this movie and everything it stands for.  Abrams did a sh** job as did Disney.

    I've heard netflix is going to be partnering with Nickelodeon. Which means my 90s cartoon nostaligia is torn between the two services. ?

  3. @Quibby now that you've had a few more days, any further thoughts on the game?

    I finally finished Witcher 3 and I've been playing Outer Worlds.  It's pretty fun; far more tight in narrative and ordered in scope.  There's not much reward for exploring the world beyond finding ammo or bits and while it's pretty it's not revolutionary graphics-wise.  It has a few new gameplay quirks that are cool like flaws, and I like the dialogue options and skill tree.  I do enjoy that it doesn't make me feel like I'm missing out by not exploring and there aren't a cosmic shit ton of sidequests to explore.

  4. I almost failed out of grad school due to Settlers of Catan.

    These days I've branched out a lot more.  Here are some recent ones:

    Splendor: a card and bidding based game that sees you as a jewel merchant trying to beat out rivals.

    Complexity: ++

    Setup: ++

    Replayability: +++

    Colt Express: this game sees you as a character in a train robbery.  The novel aspect of this game is the narrative structure and how the game story plays out.  Hijinks and shenanigans abound.  No game ever plays the same.  Really fun.

    Complexity: +/++

    Setup: +

    Replayability: ++

    Sabateur: simple card game about dwarven miners trying to find gold...and the sabateur attempting to stop them.  How good is your poker face?

    Compexity: +

    Setup: +

    Replayability: +++

    Ticket to Ride: I never ever win this game that styles players as train barons attempting to cover the US or Europe in railroads.

    Complexity: ++

    Setup: +

    Replayability: +++

  5. " They are sequels in name but they are remakes in spirit, and everything in them is officially sanctioned because it can’t really be any other way. That’s the nature of modern film franchises: market-researched, audience-tested, vetted, modified, revetted and remodified until they’re ready for consumption.

    ...

    For anyone who dreams of making movies or who is just starting out, the situation at this moment is brutal and inhospitable to art. And the act of simply writing those words fills me with terrible sadness. "

    I tend to side with Scorsese here.  I'm not a big friend to "superhero" films and I find myself resisting their pull even as I see most of them and casually enjoy them at some level.

  6. I'm gonna throw a random movie called The Four Feathers into the mix.

    It stars Heath Ledger and Kate Hudson and while it's a solid movie with a good story and good actors, the real reason I would consider it one of the greatest adaptations is because the movie is fun but the book is boring as hell.  I tried reading the book and gave up it was so boring - something I very rarely do.

    Check it out.  It's an entertaining film.  Heath Ledger is castigated for cowardice and spends the rest of the film traveling to...Egypt(?) in an effort to save his friends and regain his honor.

  7. Hopped on that AMC A-List membership.

    3 movies per week for $23 a month.

    BLAMMO

    Now for reviews:

    Went and saw the new Terminator: Dark Fate and found it to be a decent fun-to-watch action flick.  All power to the lady crew.

    Went back yesterday and saw The Lighthouse.  Heavy on Greek mythology and weird as f***; Willem Dafoe and Edward Cullen do a stellar job in this slow-burn-mindf*** of a movie.  Beautifully shot in some sort of gray filter, the Eggers make a solid follow-up to their standout horror film, The Witch.

  8. I got into the Horror genre through Cabin in the Woods, but the Babadook kept me there.

    I recently watched The Witch and It Follows and both were pretty great.

    Also Us and Get Out.  Us was definitely more jumpy but creepy and solid.  Get Out was just rad.

    Any time I want that spinal hair raising creepy feeling I just watch that episode of Dr. Who with the Angels.  Don't Blink?

  9. Damn that's a lot of youtube lol.  Never explored it too much - especially not to Imlad's degree.  I mostly just watch sport highlights from the games the day before that I missed or occasionally a lecture of some sort.  I'll have to check some of those out - I kind of always assumed youtube was mostly full of popculture bull****, makeup tips, or children posting shoddy song covers.

    I do love Joe Rogan amd like @SinisterDeath said, he is insanely prolific.  I've listened to some fascinating interviews with Jordan Peterson, Forrest Galante, and many more.

    These days I'm pretty much only consuming Fantasy Footballers podcasts though.
