You got me I am the king of making excuses for the adaption I am famous for it on here. LOL I did not say they did it well or that it was impossible i took affront to you saying that the internal dialogue in the EOTW was largely useless and almost entirely consisted of a single thing which was blatantly untrue. There are very few people on this board who are more critical than me of the way the "adaption" was handled.

I don't really think you did it for comedic effect and if so it was a total failure. It is still an absolutely insane overexaggeration. Rand and Perrin IMO were the 2 characters that benefited most from internal dialogue in EOTW. Rand with his father issues and Perrin with the wolves and violence. Would it be impossible to do that work in another way absolutely not. Establishing both these narratives is absolutely core to their characters. Could it be done with just a few lines I highly doubt it as this would leave it feeling incredibly shallow. The almost complete removal of Tam from Rands storyline is a terrible disservice to the original story. Does RJ repeatedly have the boys thinking their friends are more accomplished at talking to women yes, however it is usually a single line only and then moved past.

Not sure about that Emonds Field was basically a dank hovel in the show absolutely nothing like the image I had from the books.

Some parts where not perfect the villagers taking out the Dam defenders never felt right unless they had a massive numerical advantage (fairly sure that they had added some soldiers to just the basic villagers). It is possible that Demandred thought he had sufficient numbers there. No need to keep the channeler Mat left behind in the dark about the plan though. Lan definitely said that Demandred was the better swordsman it was caveated by saying it might have been different if he was not as tired as he was but both fighters definitely stated that Demandred was the superior at that moment. Olver was not made into a hero. I think he might have been a young Gaidal Cain but it is not confirmed to the best of my knowledge. Felt that was a long build up the constant talking about how ugly he was and how Birgette was attracted to ugly men.

I don't think Mats skills were useless, the battle was a close run thing and could have fallen either way no matter Demandreds eventual fate excluding his channeling but that was negated as he did not want to tire himself and expose himself to a counterattack from Rand who he believed was present. The lights forces were the underdog and Mat had to keep the battle going till he hoped he got a chance to tilt it in his favour. The duels while foolish were a symptom of Demandreds arrogance and pathological need to best Rand/LTT to prove he was the better man. Also in his defence he established in each of the duels pretty early that he was the better swordsman. I would have had Lan die from his wound if it was up to me.

Things you find funny in the books (spoilers)

Mats letter to Elayne was great as well. -
I actually laughed when it happened. Only actor worse than Napier in the series.

California might have something slightly more important going on atm. -
Thinking rafe could adequately finish the series in 16 more episodes is hopelessly optimistic. Even if he actually had the skills to tell a good story in the first place reducing the rest of the series to 16 episodes would be basically impossible for the very best screenwriters in history. It truly is time that writers rooms got cut back massively far too many cooks are spoiling far too much.

What would you have started the show with?
Mailman replied to Blackbyrd's topic in Wheel of Time TV Show
I am not saying time limitations are not a major issue but 10 minutes for set up is hardly excessive. It must also be remembered that the release was 3 episodes in one go so that is close to 3 hours, hiding a bit of extra groundwork in that timeframe is not as noticeable as the standalone releases. -

Prologue 100% Sets everything up wonderfully. The Dragon, Ishy, Shai'tan, the taint and the madness, the idea of rebirth, epic timeline. -

And I was simply explaining why I did not think it was confusing.

I don't really see what there is to be confused about. Initial mentions of titles relating to positions of authority are always unknown till they are fleshed out however those titles in themselves obviously denote significant positions of power even if they are never mentioned again that is obvious. LTT being insane is clear as he is walking and talking calmly amid the bodies and destruction. After he is healed he recognises and is then convinced it is himself that caused the carnage. Betrayer of Hope a clear declaration about how LTT views Ishy. Clear description of LTT and company striking against the dark one and that because of this strike it has caused the madness and destruction that is taking place. The fervour of Ishy talking about their battle shows he is a true believer. Ishy standing at Dragonmount stating it is not over shows us that the following story is connected to what we have just witnessed. All of this feels very obvious to me the hang up appears to be about names and titles which I find confusing as even if they were never mentioned again the fact that they are titles gives them their own gravitas. If I make up a title Lord Zehyr, Master of the Winds, Lord of the three realms, Champion of the Highlands. You don't need to know what those actually refer to know that they are a person of importance and significance in this world.

Did the series give you a deeper understanding of the books?
Mailman replied to expat's topic in Wheel of Time TV Show
The Harem storyline is such a minor part of the books. Rand only sleeps with Elayne and Aviendha from memory one time and two times respectively, Min is the only he sleeps with on a regular basis. Personally I think that the idea that a couple is the best relationship dynamic for every person on Earth is shortsighted and has to a large extent been forced upon us as traditional by religions that are far too interested in our sexual activities. As long as the relationship is safe, sane and consensual I don't really see why any number can't make up a healthy relationship. I was okay with the show giving a more physical relationship between any of the Avi, Min or Elayne, but for Avi and Elayne it would require some changes especially in regards to the rebirthing ceremony. -
How do channelers discover they are bad at healing?
Mailman replied to king of nowhere's topic in Wheel of Time Books
Also if we are talking about Rand era Aes Sedai healers almost all of them healed with a simple mix of air water and spirit and it tried to heal everything at once there was no finesse to it. Only Cadsuanes friend to my knowledge had more refined control outside Nynaeve and post her teachings. So if you struggled to heal a simple disease or injury then you knew that your talents lay elsewhere. Otherwise it was basically your talent times your power level equalled your total healing output and that could not be applied to a specific injury target only a whole body spread. -
One way to link it would be 3000 years ago. Prologue into the creation of Dragonmount with the shadow touching the Island of Tar Valon then either a straight time jump or if it could be done well a fast forward of destruction sweeping the lands and then the building of Tar Valon. 2980 years later. The Mountain still casting it shadow on the shining Walls. Then doing the Gitara prophecy scene and introducing Moiraine and Siuan. Then 20 years later. Show Moiraine arriving in the Two Rivers or focus on Rand. The only drawback to this start is that it could be 15 to 20 minutes before we get to the Two Rivers. You can even have a sweeping visual of the Aiel battle outside the walls as you move into Tar Valon to focus on Gitara.

It establishes The taint and the madness, Shaitan, the Dragon and Ishy. It sets the timeline and the stakes for the series how you could dismiss this as not meaningful is a mystery to me. Why would it be the future and if the that was a concern you could simply have the standard book opening and a 3000 years later. The shows start must have been a tremendous disappointment to you if you thought the prologue lacked development and meaning.
-
They also could not initiate combat as that oath was also still in place. It's mentioned that one of the captured was only good for making the sky lights I think. That 4th oath would work if applied however I would reword it to making you unable to embrace the source while leashed. It would however obviously not apply to any non tower affiliated channelers that where swept up by the Seachan and that testing was rigorous.
-
The prologue should have been the start of the show. It allows you to set the stakes of the entire series. It sets the epic nature and timeline of the series. It gives you an epic set piece start that allows you to set the violence level of the series. You showcase your channeling CGI. You establish that male power users are doomed to insanity. It should have been the most detailed and expensive piece per minute in the entire first season to set the hook for non book viewers. Unbelievable mistake to replace it with Liandrin hunting a Rando male channeler.

The forsaken could not enter till Mats dagger was inside. It was clearly explained that the dagger was the thing that they had followed. Ishy clearly knew about the Eye as he had discussed it at length throughout the book. I agree with all your other points that the eye got numerous mentions during the book.
