  1. Kyn had felt her creeping closer, but had kept to his cup and listened. He was almost startled when she spoke, his head shot up and he grinned, listening to her account of how things went and laughed at Thera's quip. "If anyone deserved those ants it was him, it wasn't my fault you were breaking the rules. Although, if you'd done it more often then you might have realized how not to get caught." He grinned.

"This is Loraine Sedai, my bond holder and she has indeed wielded her blade in our defense. Which is of course why I trained her well, she's been getting into trouble ever since the day I met her. I've no shame at having a Sister save my life, she is a Sister of the Battle Ajah and in the heat of battle comrades do for each other. If it was otherwise then the Shadow would have won by now... and that is something I would, and nearly have, given my life to prevent." He was standing and gesturing Loraine to his chair as he fetched her a cup before dragging a chair up near hers. He and taken note of the unease, "Light y'all, she a person just like anyone else, except that she can smite an army with her mind. You'd best be gettin' used to being around one for this is what lies in your future. Be respectful of Aes Sedai, but don't be cowed. You'll do your Sedai no good if you cannot say no."

  2. Kynwric was not on the yard when Sieve arrived, but came rolling in a few minutes later. "My apologies, I had business to attend to and it ran late. You are ready?" He asked when he picked up a lathe and shield. "Good." He replied absently, "first thing is it run through what you already know. Proceed." During this time he watched as Perivar worked through the forms he had already been taught. Once they were completed he began to instruct. First is a form that is not meant for combat, although it can be adapted for it. He showed the horizontal, pivoting slash while pivoting on one foot. "Heron Wading in the Rushes the reason I say it can be adapted for our use is because of the shield. By raising the point you can slash with the bottom edge of it just before the blade comes in to strike. Mainly I want you to practice it just for balance. But on occasion add in the shield slash." He then had the boy practice the balance enhancing form several times, correcting the flaws in his stance. When he was satisfied he moved on.

"Good, next is Hummingbird Kisses the Honeyrose, which is a face thrust, quick and hard. It will slow down anyone intent on running you down and can also be used as a feint to get you some space between yourself and an opponent." He demonstrated the form which was more of a flick at the eyes then a full on thrust, again having Perivar work through the kinks and flaws before moving on. "Following that is Parting the Silk which is used as a blocking and a striking form." Again Kyn demonstrated the form about which he was speaking, a mid level slash which could gut a man or parry any kind of slash or thrust into the midsection. "The nice thing about this, is by countering Parting the Silk with Parting the Silk leads you into the next form." He gestured for Perivar to perform Parting the Silk and when he did Kynwric also performed the same form, binding their blades and then giving the quick circular motion that is "The Grapevine Twines and is used to disarm an opponent." As he finished of the rotation with a flick and sent Perivar's sword tumbling to the ground. "Now, practice, practice, practice. Come find me in a week and we'll spar so I can see what it is you have learned."

OOC: Again practice, work through all the forms. Your next post should include the practice and conclude it with a spar with Kynwric.

  3. Kynwric took a moment to get a drink from the water bucket before heading over to speak to all three of the trainees. He had his lathe leaning back across his shoulder and was smiling. "That was well done, all of you. Stamina though, you all need stamina. My style of fighting is built around wearing the opponent down, letting them spend themselves on offense while waiting for the perfect moment to strike. In an even match between two of my Path there could be no blows thrown for... well, a long time. Right up until the point that one of felt he had an advantage and stuck, then it would be a brief flurry until someone was dead or we were back to even. Continue to practice the Forms, daily. They must be a part of you, you must be able to use them without thinking and just move to them as needed. You must also me able to adapt them without thinking. Again, well done and never fear there is still much more to learn... now off to clean up and supper. I am sure there are chores to be done as well." And he dismissed the trio with a wave of his hand.

OOC: And Mel, you too are done. Post it up in your Progress thread. Thank you all for being so prompt and writing well, I have enjoyed it. If you need help with something else I'd be happy to oblige.

  4. This came up IC in the Night of Rememberance thread. I'd be happy to run it, although it does not fit any of the requirements. It would be basically a table discussion of what the bond is, what it means for the Warder and the Aes Sedai and what you can and can't do with it.

    Anyone interested?

  5. OOC: Melenis is basically right. Ok, Kyn is all about teaching here, so he isn't going to just go all out and try to kill you immediately. He is going to use the same forms you use, offensively he is going to fight at your speed. He is going to defend to the best of his ability. Kyn's WS is 12, he's been fighting for at least half your lives, most of it against real, live, trying to kill him opponents. This is part of the lesson, I throught the bit in earlier about the forms he was practicing to give some relation from where he is to where you are, use it. In all likelyhood he could defeat you without a weapon at this point.

Basically, when you screw up you will get hit. When you do things right you won't.

  6. "How would you feel if she decided she wanted to take on another warder?"

"Melenis, good to see you here.  Come to join us in our story-telling and boozing? Speaking of which, can I get you a drink?"

Kynwric nodded to Melenis as she entered and then looked to Thera as Jasine greeted the girl. "Perhaps we need a class on what the bond is and what to expect?" Then he returned to the question at hand. "To be truthful, I have not thought on it as Loraine Sedai has never brought up the idea of another Warder. It is not something I would entertain lightly however, as I am rather... protective... of Loraine." He thought for a moment and continued on. "While I can see the benefits of having a second sword and second pair of eyes, I am not sure how the bond would work with having more than Loraine and myself involved. We have been a pair for so long that I am not sure that it would be a good idea to introduce someone new to that dynamic. However, in the end it is not my decision to make."

  7. "Master Kynwric?  Your Sedai.  How did you know you wanted to be bonded to her?  Did she approach you to ask of it?"

"I was told when I first arrived here, by another trainee, that it was the Aes Sedai who choose whom they will bond and if.  Is there a point where the Tower Guards have a chance to meet and get to know the Aes Sedai, or do they just come down to the yards and pick one out they like the look of, like one might do when choosing horse stock?"

"And what happens when a Green Sister bonds more than one warder?  What if her warders don't get on well?"

"Oh, you have chosen a good story to tell, and I'll get to it in a moment. As for the other questions think of it thusly. If you were Aes Sedai would you bond a man, or woman, who wanted nothing to do with you? Or one who did not get along with the others you kept?" He looked hard at Jasine, waiting for an answer. When he got the pensive 'No.' he was waiting on he continued "Then why would you think Aes Sedai to be any different? They are women, yes and they have a woman's strengths and foibles as well. But they are the most well educated women anywhere and as such they generally make wise decisions. Most Aes Sedai take quite a while to figure out whom they will bond, it is much like a marriage in many respects. It helps grandly if the two of you like, respect and can generally get along with one another. Even more so when you add others to the mix. So, in general, it is more important to the Aes Sedai to know you as a man as it is for you to know her." He then stood from his chair and began to walk to the keg to refill his cup again. "Basically, fear not young man. All will be well." Once he hda filled his cup and regained his seat and took a good long swig of the mead therein Kynwric began to talk again. "Many years ago, when I was just raised to the Tower Guard I caught a pair of Accepted playing with lathes, one of which was dangerously broken. I intervened and took the broken lathe away from one of them. Which, as you can imagine, caught me great deal of flak from said Accepted. Seeing as I was 17 or 18 and she had to by that time be old enough to be my mother." He chuckled and thought for a moment as he took another drink. "I learned their names, both of them and thought about reporting them to the MoNster. In the end I didn't. Well, a few weeks later I was sitting out under that tree in the yard, a certain accepted brought me a book, a book laced with some of the most vicious biting ants you will ever see. They were mad ants too... well, after much killing of ants and a lot of cursing, muttering and threatening later I was free of ants and pretty well bitten. Skip ahead a little bit now, there is a fresh young Green Sister who wants to learn the Sword, as you know all Green Sisters do. They seem to think that learning how to use a sword makes them less dependent on their Warders..." he grinned broadly at this. "... we all know that is hardly the case." Then he took another long drink, tipping the mug all the way up. "Well, that Green Sister was given to me to be trained. Guess who it was? The very same Accepted whom I had taken a lathe away from, and the very same Accepted who had doused me in ants. She had apparently asked for me to..." Another grin plastered across his face. "Well, I trained her, Basic Fitness, Sword Forms, Survival... all of that stuff that is required. But in the training I was learning too, and she and I were learning each other. We found out we worked well together, we also found out that we liked each others company. Not too long after her training was complete she asked me to accompany her and a Blue Sister and a few others on a trip to the Borderlands. I agreed, and it was on that trip that she bonded me and I have been the Warder to Loraine Sedai of the Green Ajah ever since. She is still as stubborn, willful and hot-headed as the day she took me and while not all days are good days. I would not trade what I have for any other life in all the world." He noticed the wistfulness that had crept into his voice, he knew Thera would notice it if she was paying attention and he shook his head and shrugged. "There you go Jasine, that is that story."

  8. Kynwric was pleased with how the trainees had progressed, far better than he had when he had learned these forms many years ago. He answered the questions as best he could, partivularly Gaidan's about how to effectively disarm a two-handed sword. "The trick is, when you are performing Grapevine to step in and use the hilt of your free hand to punch or bash or hack at your opponent. But I would only do this when you are sure of success, it is not always a bad thing to get back to even footing. Remember, live first, kill second."

Th highlight of the afternoon was the brief spar with Melenis, particularly where she countered his Arc of the Moon deftly and knelt performing Parting the Silk aimed at his knees. He was sure she was expecting him to parry it in some way, and with his shield he would have. Without it though he lept, letting the blade pass under him and coming back down to tap her on the head with his lathe. He smiled as he backed out and gave a nod to her. Very good, nicely improvised." He then turned to the others. "Well done, all of you. I am pleased. You assignment is to practice these forms for at least the next 3 days. After those three days come and find me when you are ready and we will spar with lathes."

OOC: A little practice time and the a full contact Spar with lathes against me. Have fun with the spar, but perform all the forms save for Heron Wading in the Rushes. Kyn fights Sword and Shield, so he will have his shield on his arm.

  9. Kynwric finally went and got a shield from the racks, settling it on his arm so he could better show Perivar how things worked. "The shield simply is there when you are doing all of those forms save for Lion on the Hill, which is when it needs to be in its ready position. So far so good though, it could of been much worse Next up is Arc of the Moon, which is a slash like so." Deomstrating the quick throat level slash meant to behead. "Remember to work you attacks around your shield, and to cover what is left open by the attack with the shield." He demonstrated the form again and then let Perivar practice it.

"Next," Kynwric began "...is The Courtier Taps his Fan. Which instead of beheading, cleaves straight down.  Again, mind you shield and realize that even when someone tried to parry this blow, they may simply redirect it into their arms or shoulders." The short hard chop was something most knew from simple child's play and again he had Perivar practice it over and over and over.

"And now it is time for The Kingfisher takes a Silverback. This one I use the top of my shield as a guide, moving out and over it and then pivoting the thrust down." He performed the thrust. "Notice how your natural inclination is to drive the sword up in riposte makes the form even more dangerous, I like to follow this with Courtier Taps his Fan." Perivar seemed to be picking these up quickly and he again let the boy practice a bit before the last form for the day.

"Alright, the last form for today is the The Falcon Stoops It is identical to The Kingfisher takes a Silverback except instead of the looping of [i}Kingfisher[/i] this one is hard and fast and does not drop so much, again demonstrating what he meant. "Very well, that is all for today. Practice these today and tomorrow and we'll reconvene the day after to see where you are at and move on."

OOC: Perform and practice and meet Kyn here again to do the next set.
