  1. The fire crackled in a small fireplace in the Library, as Serena sat back and read up on Shadowspawn. The Blue wrapped her long, tight fitted, blue coat around her shoulders, as a slight chill seemed to waft through the tiny cracks in the walls of the White Tower. Reading up on the Dark One and his minions had become a past time of Serena's lately. She had taught classes on them, and seemed to be studying up on them as much as possible. Shrugging, she supposed one could never know enough about the enemy.

A slight commotion arose from behind her, as she turned over her shoulder to look, she found herself quite perplexed at the image of a Sister passed out at one of the tables. As the woman's back and chest rose with each breath, Serena was sure the woman had merely fallen asleep while reading. It was not unusual. Biting her lower lip, the Blue furrowed her brow and studied the Aes Sedai carefully. The long strawberry blonde hair tied back in a braid reminded her of someone she had known. Now, who did it remind her of?

Before she knew it, she was walking towards the slumbering Sister. Her soft leather boots hardly made a sound on the stone floor. As she approached the sleeping woman, Serena bent down to get a better look at the Aes Sedai's face. Light, it's Liara Casden! Serena had known the woman while Liara was a novice, then Accepted. The Brown Sister had been raised to the Shawl right after Elyssa Liet, Serena's Ajah Sister.

Shaking her head and smiling softly, Serena gently laid a hand on Liara's shoulder. As the other woman stirred, Serena greeted her. "Welcome home, Sister. Your trip has been long and trying, I'm sure. Do you need help to your rooms? Or should I send for tea?" The Blue's emerald eyes glistened as she welcomed Liara back to the Tower.

  2. Serena was sure that Zaire would want to go straight to her rooms, when the new novice began to say as much, she headed in that direction. To her surprise, the young woman wanted to take a little trip around the White Tower, despite her state of fatigue. With a silent nod, the Blue Sister turned down a seperate corridor and they were off towards the library.

"I will take you to the Library, first. After that you can make any request you like. There are, most likely, places you have never heard of that exist within the White Tower and just outside on the Grounds. All places are good and well for you to learn and memorize their location; however, I feel it necessary to take you where you will spend most of your time as a novice and Accepted." As she turned to speak to her Mentee, Serena was sure she caught a funny look in the girls' eyes. Was that glee? It was definately amusement. Perhaps, she will get used to learning from someone much shorter than her. If not, well...that will just make things a little bit more interesting.Serena loved a good challenge, in fact, she revelled in it.

The Blue Sister seemed to glide down the corridor, as she did so, she produced a small dagger from her coat sleeve and began to twirl it between her fingers as they walked. The silver blade flashed as it reflected the light from the standlamps, and the small sapphire set into the hilt seemed to glow. Recently, Serena had taken all of her blades, five in total, to have a few small roses engraved onto the blade. No one knew the significance of the additions, except Serena and a select few.

As they reached the library, the Aes Sedai lead Zaire through the novice entrance. "This is the door you will be using to enter and exit the Library, atleast until you are Accepted." The hinges screeched as she pushed open the door. Turning around to face them, Serena frowned at the rusted things and made a comment about them needing to be properly oiled.

The expanse of the Library, one of the Greatest in the world, lay before them. Brown Sisters hustled and bustled about, along with busy Accepted studying up on their Research. With a gesture, Serena outstretched her hand. "This is where you will be spending alot of time. If you need help looking for something, a specific subject, perhaps, you'll want to ask one of the Brown Sisters that work here. I do study quite a bit, but there are things that a Brown Sister will know that many of the rest of us wont. There are tomes here that will help you with almost anything and everything you ever wanted to know." Tilted emerald eyes fixed on Zaire's with a matter-of-fact look. "There are different floors here, and even some classrooms located on the second floor and above."

A novice holding what seemed like a tower of books practically ran into Serena and Zaire. As the girl noticed Serena, she came to a complete stop and dropped half the books with a squeal. Bending down to pick up one of the large books, the Blue smiled at the girl, then glared at her. "Be careful, Child. Try to watch where you're going because next time this happens I'll have you off to Joaquin Sedai with a note saying how you've been treating her books." The novice jumped again, curtsied, thanked Serena and was off on her way. Turning back to Zaire, the Blue asked, "Do you have any questions about the Library? If not, we'll head to the Kitchens. That will be the other place you will spend most of your time." As she waited for Zaire to answer, the Saldaean Sister's eyes shone with mischief.

  3. Thanking the novice and sending the child off on a new task, Serena turned the piece of parchment over in her hand. A letter from the Mistress of Novices could mean one of a hundred different things. However, Serena was sure she hadn't done anything to recieve a penance at this stage in the game. It wasn't highly unlikely that Sisters were given penances still. One might think that after recieving the shawl they would stop having to take orders from the Mistress of Novices. Quite the contrary, really, but hopefully the innitiate had learned her lessons as a youth and would not have to make those same mistakes now.

Wrapping her long, tight-fitted, blue coat around her and doing up the few buttons at her chest, Serena briefly channeled to tighten the Wards at the threshhold of her rooms. They would go off and indicate to her if they were broken by anyone. It was a sad state of affairs when a Sister could not even trust the women within her own Ajah. These days, you never really knew who might go rifling through your things.

The diminutive Saldaean Blue, crept quietly down the corridors towards the offices of Faerzyne Sedai. Her soft black leather boots hardly made a sound on the stone floors. Tilted emerald eyes set off by short pixie-like raven hair, Serena was not the typical looking Aes Sedai, but that was the point, wasn't it? A Blue Sister delved deeply into the Game of Houses, not that others didn't, they just did it more so than most. The fiery Saldaean woman had given up the regular dresses of the other Aes Sedai in the Tower, and had loved her breeches and blouse. At certain times, the Hall or her Ajah called for more formal dress, and Serena would don the proper garments with dignity.

Pushing the large wooden door open, Serena nodded to the Mistress of Novices and glanced at the fresh innitiate before her. At one time, Serena had been ashamed of her height, especially when going to pick up new Mentee's. The Blue Sister was only 5'2, and was dwarfed by many other women in the Tower, even the novices and Accepted. The new novice looked relieved to be in the offices of the Mistress of Novices.

"Greetings, Child. I am Serena Sedai of the Blue Ajah. I will be your Mentor." The two exchanged greetings and were sent on their way. As the door closed behind them, Serena turned to Zaire and asked, "Would you like a small tour of the White Tower first? Or would you rather get right to your rooms? I'm sure the Aes Sedai that brought you here was tremendously helpful, however if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me." Arriving at the tower was always an intrigueing and sometimes fearfull event. It would not be wrong for a girl to want to go straight to her rooms.

  4. Lav- my Mentee disappeared. Hopefully she will see this and come back. *waves furiously at nothing*

Zaire- I'm your Mentor, I sent you a PM and an email, and another PM I believe....please come back *cries* I didn't even get to take her through any classes and she's already running from me. Hehe. Just kidding.

If anyone has seen Zaire, please direct her back here and to her Mentor, it would be greatly appreciated.

  5. Tapping her pipe to remove the ash and resin left over, Serena put the dainty wood carved thing into a small box and closed it with the small latch. Putting the small mahogany box into a drawer in her desk, the Blue then turned around to stare out the window behind her. The sun was descending the western portion of the sky, indicating that later afternoon was upon the city of Tar Valon. Birds chirped outside the window, and nested against the rail of the small stone balcony. It seemed strange to the Aes Sedai that the birds would be nesting this late in the year, but she was not a Brown and hardly spent much time pondering the situation.

Stacking some papers together, and cleaning the surface of her desk, Serena thought about the class she had given earlier that day. Shadowspawn were never a subject taken lightly, especially for this Blue, but to any Aes Sedai. The innitiates had to be instructed on the different types and how to deal with them, they simply had to. How would an Aes Sedai deal with a Fade if she had never seen or heard anything about them? Most of the girls that came to the White Tower still believed that most of the Shadowspawn were just horror stories their parents would tell them. Unfortunately, maybe fortunately later in the young womans life, one Accepted had had previous interactions with the dark beings of the Dark One.

Elyith , an interesting girl from the borderlands, a girl that the Blue Ajah had been keeping an eye on for quite some time. Part of being a Sister of the White Tower was to help in directing the young innitiates towards the Ajah that would suit them the best. Atleast, towards the Ajah that the Aes Sedai thought would suit them the best. Now, most of the women that came from up north, Borderland area, would head directly towards the Green Ajah. It simply seemed to be the choice of most women raised in a family that battled the minions of the Blight. However, like Serena, Elyith seemed to have a certain flair about her. Something that had more to do with fighting than just plain steel against steel.

Picking up her quill and dipping it into the ink, she began to write out a summons.

    Elyith Ishel,

I request your presance in my quarters as soon as this parchment touches your fingertips. If there are classes you are concerned with, or other appointments you have made, I will speak with the necessary individuals to have you freed from any consequence should you miss your appointments. The behaviour you expressed in my Shadowspawn class earlier today interests me greatly; however, also deserves a penance. Please be rational in making your decision of whether you will appear in my rooms as soon as possible, or not.

    Thank you,

    In the Light,

Serena Sedai of the Blue Ajah

Sealing the parchment with her Great Serpent ring and some blue candlewax, Serena beckoned for a novice to carry the note straight to the Accepted, whose name was clearly written on the front of the paper. Stepping back into her rooms, Serena waited patiently for the Accepted to arrive.

  6. The ride to Cairhien was more than interesting for Serena. Keeping her eyes on Thera, as not to swirve them over to Lavinya Sedai, was quite a feat in itself. However, the link between her Ajah Sister, Estel Liones, Orion, her Warder, and Lavinya Sedai was entertainment enough. At times Serena was sure that their young group leader, Aramina, might be part of that love triangle as well. Whether or not the Green was involved, it made ones mind wander into possible schemes, plots and scenarios between each person involved with Estel.

Letting a small, mischievious smile approach her lips, the deminutive Blue cast a glance at her Gaidin and shook her head. Silently, she wondered if Thera had been paying attention to the looks and the electric-like energy passing between the others. Reaching into her coat pocket she produced a small pipe and tobacco. Packing the pipe as she sat upon River Mists saddle. Saldaean women were known for their horsemanship, and although Serena had never been taught to ride by a Saldaean, the ability must have past itself down through her blood, unlike some of the other traits of Saldaean women.

The traffic outside Cairhien began to pick up as they neared the city. Puffing away on her pipe, Serena pursed her lips as she stared into the sad and drawn faces of children and adults alike. Shaking her head, her tilted emerald eyes sparkled as if a fire had been lit behind them. The ravaging of the Cairhienins sparked anger and practically rage beneath her otherwise cool façade. Humans against humans, no matter what the background, was no fight that any of them should be in this close to Tarmon Gaidon.

Arriving at the Inn, Serena unpacked the necessary items in silence. Thera was in the room, the two would share it, but no words were passed between them. A rift had been caused between Aes Sedai and Gaidin. The Blue Sister loved her Warder with all of her heart, and not just on a friend to friend basis. However, the two had never spoken of their real care for each other. Serena was unsure that Thera felt the same way about her. Everytime her Gaidin saw a certain Tower Guard, the feelings that would flow through the bond into Serena’s mind, were none other than those of an emptyness, anger and slight jealousy. Certainly, if Thera still had feelings for the man, then she could not feel for Serena the way the Aes Sedai did for Thera.

Pushing thoughts into the back of her mind, Serena stood dusted off her pale blue floor length coat and wrapped it around her. The group that Sirayn had elected to be her secret Order of the Rose, had a certain chilly heir about them. “I think I will meet the others in the dining room. You may join if you wish, Thera. Although, I will fill you in on what I heard whether you join or not.†With that, the small Blue sister glided out of the room and headed for the others.

Upon arriving to the table, Serena pursed her lips as she noticed that she was not one of the first to arrive. Narrowing her tilted eyes to study each woman in the candlelight, she would be a fool not to notice the shadowy images flickering across the faces of the others. Light, this mission is going to be bloody interesting. At any other time, Serena would have found the love triangle, or square or whatever you wanted to call it, delightful and slightly amusing. Taking her seat, she nodded to Aramina Sedai, to Estel, grateful that her Ajah sister was a part of this plot, then quickly to Lavinya Sedai, merely to express that she had noticed the woman in the room. Her cheeks felt as if they would flush as she met eye to eye with the Gray. As if to hide her childish crush, and embarassment which she felt for having the crush, Serena flashed a sly smile at Lavinya, then reached into her coat pocket for her pipe.

Leaning back comfortably in her chair the Saldaean sister emanated relaxation and calm to the outside eye, inside, she was aware and alert. Holding up the lit pipe, she said. "You don't mind, I'm sure." Not a question for permission, merely a statement. Nodding before anyone could reply, she began to puff gently on the stem, and appear as if she were in deep thought.

  7. Serena turned from Sheena after she had smiled at the woman, her friend and Ajah Sister. Her thoughts had been swept away by when the two had first been raised to the Shawl, only months apart. Serena had first been angry with the other woman for her friendship with a rival of Serena's, and a Red Sister. Rayne Sedai had been involved in many a dispute with Serena, and when Serena had her first Mentee Carise Doraile, Rayne stole her away and hid her under the wing of the Red Ajah.

The part that made Serena's cheeks flush, was the fact that she had been a hypocrite. Getting angry with with Sheena do'Amoren for her relationship with a Red, when Serena later did the same thing. Secretly, she held onto her friendship with her Mentee. In secret, was the closest they could be for the rift between their two Ajah's. It had made it a bit simpler to communicate once Carise had left for Ebou Dar, the two of them seemed to speak more often in letters than they had since her old Mentee had been raised to the Shawl and still in the Tower.

Feeling Thera behind her, and inside her mind, made the Blue Sister slightly sad. She would not wear her emotions on her sleeve, so she refused to speak of them to anyone. Even Thera, which was probably not the best thing for a relationship of any kind. Serena loved Thera, with all of her being, however she could not let the woman know. The Blue had loved a Gaidin before, and when he had died she had never felt worse in her life. The misery, the depression, the constant yearning for death, it was not worth it. However, it was not her own selfish needs that made her not want to show her love for Thera, it was for Thera, she was convinced. Never, would Serena ever wish what she had gone through on somebody else. Especially, the woman she loved. Shaking her head in a fury of emotions, Serena silently yelled at herself before fuzzing the bond. I could never let that happen to her. Just because I want to be with her, and tell her how I feel, does not mean she should suffer for it in the end.

Concernedly, Serena glanced over at her beautiful and loyal Gaidin. Catching nothing from Thera, the Aes Sedai turned away quickly and resumed her cool features and watching the river bank.

Before long, the ship was docking and the deck was full of the hub-bub of sailors and deckands and passangers scrambling around to get their jobs done and be off the ship. Sheena and Serena made their way down below the deck to retrieve their things and returned in prime fashion. It would be good to be off the ship, even if the tension between so many of their party would most likely remain. Luckily, that Tower Guard Aran had stayed in his rooms with a woman he had most certainly met the first night they had been on board. However, Serena could not belittle him, she had done the same before in her lifetime.

As Serena and Sheena seemed to glide off of the ship, Rosheen jumped off the ledge onto the dock, it suddenly occured to Serena that something was amiss. She had thought it strange in the first place, the day they had all met to depart on this adventure, that their were too many of them there. Rosheen apparently had some business in Whitebridge, and Aran was their to protect Sheena. With a slight smirk, Serena wanted to laugh. The last woman in the world that needed protection, was Sheena do'Amoren. The boy, the Tower Guard that the Master at Arms had apprantly thought would suit this excursion, would be trouble. It did not take a genius to figure that out. Why Rosheen had even been allowed to go with them was beyond Serena. Business in an are they would be going through, was not enough reason to accompany Aes Sedai on THIS particular mission.

Unfuzzing the bond, the Saldaean Blue felt disconcerted and confused. Thera's feelings had been a range of depressed and sad, then suddenly disappeared. Turning over her shoulder to catch a glimpse of Rosheens hand reaching up and squeezing Thera on the shoulder, made Serena' blood boil. Tilting her head to the side, jealousy and rage being the downfall of most Saldaean women, Serena already had several scenarios going through her mind. Perhaps her Gaidin loved someone else, this mohawked woman could be a grand candidate for that. Just as Thera's emotions had disappeared, Serena thrust herself at fuzzing the bond again, and refused to let her feelings take her over. Practicing the novice excercise of opening the rosebud, and calming oneself, the Blue got hold of herself and turned away.

Within no time at all, the group had an unexpected run in with a woman that Serena knew better than most thought. In fact, the two had sworn themselves over to Sirayn Sedai and her secret Order of the Rose. Feeling her cheeks burn, as her eyes studied the form of Lavinya Sedai, the Gray Domani. Serena hoped against hope that none could see her face. The day Serena had met Lavinya Sedai in the dark, firelit rooms of Sirayns Quarters, the Blue Sister had had to direct her thoughts back to her love for Thera. Burn her if this light-forsaken domani-vixen would ruin her chances with Thera. However, it was not Lavinya that was making Serena's eyes wander.

In all shock and suprise, gritting her teeth as not to yell at the Tower Guards, Sheena and Serena were informed by the mischievious Aran that they were to have met the Gray all along, it had merely slipped his mind. When Rosheen herded Lavinya like a mule to get moving, Serena turned to Thera and arched a dark eyebrow. Silently, in her thoughts and by the look on her face, she summoned Thera to speak with her that night. She only hoped that her Gaidin understood her un-spoken message.

If the Master at Arms had supplied Sheena and herself with a group of immature Tower Guards, guards that would not be there to protect them when they most needed it....Balling her hands into fists, Serena squeezed them so tight her fingernails dug into the palms of her hands. The Sisters WOULD have control back.

  8. Smiling, Serena flicked her wrist and her dagger disappeared up her sleeve. "Well, Child. Do you have much to pack? If not, it just so happens that I am finished with my business here and will be heading back to Tar Valon as soon as possible." Tilted emerals eyes danced with the light of finding a new innitiate. Hopefully the Mistress of Novices would assign Arya to her as a Mentee.

"Gather your things. I will buy a horse for you and we can be on our way by day-break. During our travels I will discuss some matters and basic Tower ettiquette with you so you will know what to expect once we reach the city." Studying Arya, she asked. "Are you ready?"

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Swirling the wine around in her goblet, Serena peered over the edge of the cup. Her tilted emerald eyes would pierce any that crossed her gaze. Pipe smoke filled the room, the swirls of gray obstructed the vision. Always a decent place to look for a scheming worm, the tavern. However, he could not be found. Not willing to give up this one, the Blue Sister took a sip and went back to watching the common room of the Inn. A couple stole kisses in a booth in the corner, thinking they were unseen. Shaking her head, Serena smirked and let out a light laugh. One is always a fool when they are in love, she thought silently to herself.

Reaching into her coat pocket she produced a pipe and some good Two Rivers tobacco. While packing the pipe with her thumb she went back to convincing herself that this trip to Ebou Dar was NOT a complete failure. She had stopped to speak with several Eyes and Ears of hers, and some nobles needed her advice on certain things, which was always useful to know that you were needed by the people in your world. Duels had been fought around her and riots had needed to be broken up, however, she still could not find this slimy creature of a man that surely had the Dark One in his blood. If he was not a Darkfriend himself, than he was being manipulated by someone that was. Which made for an even more interesting scenario.

Leaning back, the raven haired Aes Sedai puffed on her pipe as she thought, pretending not to pay attention to the room around her. Perhaps he would show eventually. Not long after she began smoking her pipe, a slumped figure appeared through the door. With a sly smile, the Blue Sister stood up nonchalantly and seemed to glide over to where he was. As quiet as her soft black leather boots were, with the added noise of the gleeman playing his flute, Serena hardly made a sound. Before he knew it, she whispered in his ear. "I think it best you come with me. You have some...explaining to do." Gripping his elbow with her forefinger and thumb, he yelped and allowed himself to be led out the door.

Once Serena had pulled him into the alley behind the Inn, where there was no one around, she let go of his arm. Her garb would have fooled any bum or wanderer. She lacked the formal dress her sisters seemed to love, and had donned her black breeches, white blouse and floor lenght tight fitted royal blue coat. The only difference in this coat, was that it lacked the embroidered flame of Tar Valon and the blue stitching around it. However, this man was no ordinary homeless man, he recognized her ageless features right away and turned to run, his left hand sliding into his coat pocket. Most likely to retrive a knife.

Embracing the True Source before the man could even get the knife out, Serena wove thick threads of Air around his arms and legs and pushed him up against the wall of a building. She would have stuffed a knot of Air into his mouth, too, if she didn't need to speak with him. Stocking up to him, and lifting her chin so she could look down her nose at him, the Blue Sister began to question him. He tried to squirm and wiggle out of the grasp of her threads, but he could not. When she was about ready to let him go, she sensed something she had not expected to feel. Arching a dark eyebrow in question and curiosity, she turned around to see where the source of such a feeling was coming from. A channeler was near by, the One Power was not strong, so it must have been a young girl that had not even learned how to Embrace the Source, yet.

Furrowing her brow, she let go of her weaves of Air and shooed the man away. He left without a second thought. Turning to where she had felt the presance of a channeler, she crept quietly around the corner. There...staring her right in the face was a girl, maybe an inch shorter than she was. Her chin length dark hair hung straight and her eyes seemed as black as coal. Tilting her head to the side, Serena smiled. Letting the smile touch her eyes. It was always a wonderful thing to find a new girl that would be able to channel.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arya gingerly removed the dressings that covered the almost-healed gash on the right side of her face. The wounds she had received from the recent duel had forced her to rest in bed while her flesh knitted itself back together. She pulled herself up from the pallet and began to dress herself. Alina, the innkeeper's wife slipped quietly into the room.

"Arya, you must rest. You are not ready to be up and about. You must continue to rest until your body has mended itself completely."

Arya sighed. "I can't allow you to do this for me. You have already done so much for my father. He would be gone by now if not for you. And we have no way of repaying you. I can only bear to let you assist my father because he is all I have left, and I have no other choice."

The other woman's eyes fell to the floor and she reached for Arya's arm.

She couldn't bear to ask the question. "He's gone?"

The innkeeper's wife nodded sadly. "I'm so sorry. It was two nights ago. It happened as he slept."

Arya nodded sadly. The news was not entirely unexpected, but it surprised her that she did not break down completely. She was the only one left. First her mother and the baby, then her beloved brother Sam, and now her father. "Mistress Alina, please, let me do something to repay you. Anything."

"Please, child. You know very well that we want nothing in return."

Arya suspected that her mother had done something very important for Alina before she was born, but Alina would never speak of it. "I thank you for everything," Arya murmured as she continued dressing. Her dress had once been a pale yellow wool, but too much wear had turned it a muddy brown. It was her only dress, and it hung limply from her shoulders. The rest of her clothing and her cheap jewelry had been sold long ago, but she still had her long, curved knife, and she put it on her plain belt. She was leaving Ebou Dar. This place was no longer her home.

"I will be forever grateful to you." Arya said and hugged Alina tightly. She pulled her cloak about her shoulders and left without looking back.

She knew that she should wait. She was wearing all that she owned. It would be all but impossible for her to get more than a few days from Ebou Dar without joining the rest of her family, but she didn't mind. She left the inn and went north, weaving through alleyways, paying little attention to the people she passed. As she turned a corner, she stopped in her tracks. Farther down the alley, she saw a dark haired woman in a long blue coat. The woman was standing over a man who had his back against the wall of one of the buildings. Strangely, the man seemed to be unable to move, though he looked like he wanted nothing more. What Arya was seeing was obviously none of her business and she had no interest in dueling anyone today. She quickly went back the way she came, intending to take a different path. But she had barely taken three steps around the corner before she stopped. There was something about the woman she had just seen. Every instinct she had told her to keep going, but she didn't. She was still for a moment, and when she turned, she saw the woman from the alley turn the corner and stop. She tilted her head and smiled. Her vibrant green eyes seemed to see through Arya's skin, deep down inside.

"I'm sorry, my Lady," Arya stuttered. "I didn't mean to.. I didn't see.. I had not intention..."

She obviously wasn't going to find the words she was looking for, so she curtsied so quickly and clumsily that she almost toppled over.

Shaking her head as the child attempted a curtsy and practically tripped over her own feet, Serena's smile broadened. "Nonsense, Child. What you saw can do no harm to me, to you or to that horrible man." As she said the last, she wrinkled her nose and thrust her thumb back in the direction of where she had come. "I almost wish it would harm him, but I could wish in one hand and..." No, that cliche was too harsh for a childs ear. Casting aside her thoughts, she directed the conversation elsewhere. "Now, you interest me, and you look as if you haven't eaten in a week. Maybe longer. Would you wish to accompany me to the Inn I am staying at?"

Without waiting for an answer, the Aes Sedai led the girl into the Inn and took her previous seat. Waving for a serving girl, Serena ordered wine for the both of them, after carefully studying whether the girl should really have some or not. As the plump serving girl swayed away from the table, the Blue Sister cast her eyes about the room once more. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, and the din was loud enough for her to engage in such a conversation that might be too much for prying ears to hear.

Folding her small hands on the table before her, she fixed her eyes on the girl. "I suppose I should have introduced myself before inviting you, however, as I said...there is something about you that is of much interest to me." Her tilted emerald eyes sparkled. "I am Serena Morrigan, Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah." She gestured slightly with her right hand and dipped her left into an inside pocket, slipping her great serpent ring onto her index finger. "Please, tell me about yourself, Child. Afterwards, I will tell you what you wish of me that is within reason."

Tilting her head to the side again, Serena waited expectantly.

Arya had not choice but to follow the woman into the inn.

They sat down, and the woman ordered wine for them both and introduced herself.

Arya only knew a little about Aes Sedai. She knew that the Queen had an Aes Sedai advisor, and that the Children of the Light called them witches. The rest she knew from stories, and there was no telling how much of that was true. She had definitely never seen one this close, much less talked to one. The woman said that there was something about Arya that interested her, though she couldn't begin to guess what that could be. It made no sense that this woman should even bother talking to her, but here they sat.

"My father died two nights ago," Arya whispered quietly, "and now I'm the only one left... they're all gone."

The serving girl returned with their wine, and Arya took a sip. The wetness on her tongue was wonderful. She hadn't realized how parched she was. She put her glass back onto the table and before she knew it, she had told the Aes Sedai all about her mother, and Sam. "So now, I'm all alone. This is not my home anymore, and if I have to die trying, I'm leaving this place."

Serena listened intently as Arya spoke. Her small hand touched Arya's arm when she mentioned the death of her father. The Blue Sister had experience with deaths in the family, especially her own. Serena had been the last one left of the Morrigans, as far as she knew, she too had left the city she had lived in. "May the Creator shelter him and honour him always." Serena offered the prayer from the Borderlands, from Saldaea, her home.

"I understand, Arya. Do not think that I do not. My family had all been cradled in the hands of the Creator before I went to Tar Valon. I was young, just after my fifteenth summer, I believe." Light, that was a long time ago. "I might be able to help you with your plans on leaving the city. In fact, my Gaidin and I are planning to head back north to Tar Valon. I would wish to have you accompany us. It will be safer for you." Tilted emerald eyes sparkled with mischeif and her lips quirked in a smile. "But, by the scar on your face, I see that you can take care of yourself quite well."

Tapping her fingers on the table, Serena wished to test Arya right away. What could she use? Pursing her lips the Aes Sedai decided to use the sapphire on the hilt of her dagger. It had worked once before with a Mentee during and Introduction to Saidar class, perhaps it would work with the Test. Nodding, she flicked her wrist and produced a dagger from her sleeve. Turning the hilt towards Arya so she could see the large gem on the base of the hilt, she asked. "Would you please do me a favour, Child? Try and calm yourself, close your eyes if you must for a moment. Listen only to the sound of my voice." She watched as Arya closed her eyes. Speaking in a monotone voice, "Just relax, feel your thoughts drift away from you. Calm yourself..." She went on for a moment. "Now, open your eyes and concentrate on this sapphire on the hilt of my dagger. Clear your thoughts, try not to think of anything." Serena waited for Arya to do so.

The Sapphire flashed once, then twice. Both quickly. With a smile, Serena nodded and placed a hand on the girls arm again. "Just as I thought, girl. You can channel."

At first it was difficult to clear her mind, but finally she managed, and she stared intently at the Sapphire.

Arya gasped. She didn't know what to think. She stared dumbly at the Sapphire.

Finally she realized that this meant she would be going to Tar Valon. From the little she knew, she was sure that the Aes Sedai would train her, at least for a while. She pondered this. Arya wasn't sure whether she wanted to be Aes Sedai, but she did know that this was a way out of Altara. She knew that her destiny lay elsewhere, and this was a path to elsewhere.

While she considered all of it, the Aes Sedai patiently sipped her wine. Finally, Arya sighed, "All right. I'm ready for whatever is to come. What is it that I need to do?"

  10. Soft leather boots tied up to the knee, hardly made a sound on the cool stone tiles of the Green Ajah's Quarters. The swishing of skirts would have been too loud for Serena's liking, breeches and blouse were much easier to move in. The Blue Sisters long tight fitted coat held the only sign of her ajah; This coat, black, unlike any of her others had the flame of Tar Valon surrounded by blue stitching embroidered over her left breast only. Light, if her Sisters caught her in the Green's Quarters they would have her hide. Fortunately, for her sake and now Sirayn's, Serena was more skilled in sneaking about like a cat than most would think. Perhaps it was her small build, or the fact that she had been trained by Raisa Gaidin, she wasn't sure. Why ask questions when you have been given a great gift from the Creator? Wanting to smile, the Saldaean blue let her lips curl in a sly smile. Tilted emerald eyes shone with the spark of mischief.

Upon entering Sirayns quarters, Serena nodded to each woman that had already arrived. The Green Ajah seemed to have quite an interest in serving one of their own, which seemed to make sense. Even IF the Amyrlin was Raised from their own Ajah, as well. The lithe Gray domani caught Serena's eye, she would have blushed had she not been so romanticly involved with Thera, her own Gaidin. Light, those Domani could distract an ant from a mountain of sugar! Perhaps the reason the woman had chosen Gray.

Taking a seat, only after Sirayn gestured towards an array of chairs displayed before the hearth, Serena locked her eyes on the leader of their cunning group and listened attentively.

Out of the corner of her eyes she could watch the others round her. Nods and slight gestures were always expected, what they meant was a different story altogether. Had Sirayn not chosen these women so she could trust them, as she had asked Serena? Biting the inside of her cheek, Serena suddenly understood. Granted, the women could all be trusted by Sirayn. They would be sworn to her as she had been, however, they had not sworn to be rigerously honest with eachother. Oh, the tangled webs we weave, the Blue thought as she listened and watched.

"I imagine everyone will know that the city of Cairhien,” The Saldaean Blue watched as Sirayns gaze moved quickly over towards the two Cairhienin, wondering if the Green would honestly, outwardly show more affection towards those of her homeland. “is currently held by Aiel and other madmen purporting to be pawns of the Dragon Reborn." The fire in the grate seemed to spit at the sound of the Dragon. Serena was sure that she would one day place herself close enough to smell that boy-child's every move. However, their mission was to solve things politcally, mostly, and had nothing to do with him.

The thought of Cairhien being filled with the Shadow, filled with refugees and homeless children, pulled at Serena. Her Causes would be fulfilled through her work under the Order of the Rose. There had never been any doubt about that. Each 'official' reason for the Order to be there, just reaked of an 'alternative' mission. A mission that would only be dealt with behind the front of the official reason. Each woman in the room had her place in this task. Negotiating, Battle, Scheming...there was a job for each woman.

Glancing around the room again, Serena saw the other Aes Sedai, her Sisters in secrecy, in a whole new light. Yes, Sirayn had chosen well. Young or Old, Stern or Manipulative, Beautiful or Plain...The Order of the Rose was made up of some of the most powerful and influential women in the White Tower. They would fight by eachothers side in whatever means they could, they would die together for Sirayn if she ordered it.

“You will also be visiting a holding in the area. If my information is correct, there is a woman at the Rashad Ranch who is skilled in certain helpful substances … drugs, herbs and poisons, if I may be so blunt, in the supply and use of which I am greatly interested. Willing her eyes not to widen in disbelief, Serena was sure that what Sirayn spoke of could only be one thing. Probably the most dangrous herb for any channeller...no, surely not. Biting her tongue, the Blue refused to ask any further questions on that particular subject. She wished to know why, but that was not her job.

“The party will be led by Aramina Sedai.” Again, Sirayns cold steel eyes glanced briefly towards the young Sister. Was it because she was Cairhienin? Was it because she was a Green? Would the other women not in the Green Ajah feel slightly preturbed, as Serena did? Was she over-reacting?

Studying the young Green, their leader into Cairhien, with flashing emerald eyes. The Blue merely pushed her questions to the back of her mind to sort through later, and nodded to Aramina. Serena let a smile touch only her lips. Aramina Sedai would have to prove her leadership capablities to Serena before the blue would give her a full smile that touched her eyes, as well. Surely, the young Cairhienin Sister would play the Great Game with her.

On the other hand, Sirayn would not entrust her Order to someone that the others shouldn't be able to follow...surely not.

“Are there any questions?” Sitting back in her chair, mimicing an image of relaxation that was firmly implanted in her brain, Serena waited for the others to speak first and listened to each answer as if Sirayn were telling them the secret of life.

Can someone give me some input?

  13. Swiping at the dust on her long blue coat, Serena bit her lip as to not say anything more. Out of the corner of her eye, the Saldaean Blue could see the form of Halvie Faury. The Green Sister that might as well have had her on a leash. For months now Serena had been relaying important Blue Ajah matters to this bloody woman. The two had made an 'agreement', and Serena constantly felt like she had gotten the low end of the deal. Never had she been cheated out of a deal, like she had with Halvie.

Pursing her lips, Serena looked up at the sky. Twilight was becoming the dark of night. Stars glittered in the ominous blackness. The moon, it's great round and luminescant orb, was practically at it's fullest, which meant the casting of shadows was heavy this night.

The two had entered Altara not more than a few hours, and Serena was already on the prowl for the Shadow. It seemed the Dark One was infiltrating anything and everything. There was not a stone unturned that the Shadow had not already cast it's wickedness about. Atleast, that's how it felt at times. Fortune would have it, that Serena's Cause was needed now more than ever. Nodding to herself, and glancing at Halvie, she realized that having one of the Sisters from the Battle Ajah present, was probably a gift.

Slowing her horse, she turned to the Green. "This is the Inn my last informant spoke of. Ariadne said that the woman staying here fits the description we are looking for."

The Blue and Green had been on the road for quite some time. Part of Serena's agreement to Halvie was that she would give the woman important information that was meant for the Blue Ajah, only. The Blue Ajah, although one of the smallest Ajah's in the White Tower, was known to have the most extensive group of Eyes and Ears. It was true, and Serena had to give up her information. Rage boiled in the Saldaean Blue's veins and her cheeks burned as they flushed with anger. Light, how did I get myself in this bloody mess?

One of the latest letters she had received, had expressed the importance of Sisters coming out to Altara. Apparently, Darkfriend activity was at a higher rate than normal, which meant Serena would dive into her Cause at full force. The only drawback was, she had to inform the Green Sister of such activity. The Green had insisted on coming, and there was not much the Blue could do about it.

Throwing her leg over the edge of her horse as she dismounted, Serena thanked the Light she had decided to wear her breeches and blouse. Kicking off of a horse like that in a skirt, simply would not do. Leading her horse up to the Inn, the two Aes Sedai tipped the stableboys properly to see that their horses got a good rub down and brushing.

The small Blue sister lifted her chin slightly before entering the inn. Her height required her to make such movements so she would be able to look down her nose at others. Getting hold of the innkeeper had been no problem, however, the woman they were looking for was not in at the moment. Taking a seat in the common room, Serena ordered a mug of ale and went it arrived she seemed to immerse herself in it.

Peering over the edge of the mug, she said. "Carise had sent notice of her arrival here quite some time ago." Tilted emerald eyes held Halvie's in assurance. "This was LONG before our little...'arrangement'." Shaking her head, she half smiled in disbelief. "I have not failed you yet, Sister. What makes you think I will now, at a time as crucial as this? The Shadow lurks in every corner of this village, I can feel it." The last was said in lower tones, as not to frighten the others in the common room.

Leaning back, Serena reached into her inside pocket and pulled out a pipe and some good Two Rivers tobac. As she packed and lit the pipe, her features became one of deep thought. Was it right to come to Carise without sending word? They truly DID need her. Light, it was going to be a strange reunion. Serena had been Carise's mentor back at the White Tower many, many years ago. When the Red Sister came to Serena with her choice of Ajah, Serena had laid down the law about speaking terms. The two had hardly spoken since. Perhaps, a letter here and there. That was it.

If her Ajah sisters found out about Serena gallavanting about Altara with a Red, they would surely shun her forever. Narrowing her eyes, she studied Halvie, surely the woman wouldn't....

...Before Serena's thought could finish, in walked her long lost friend and Mentee. Carise appeared suprised to see them, atleast to Serena. Light, she would have been suprised, too. Putting out her pipe and standing, Serena nodded to the Red and tried incredibly hard not to wrap her arms around her old Mentee.

"May the Light favour you, Sister." Serena said with warmth in her voice and her emerald eyes.

  14. By the time they stepped through the door of the sickroom, Carise’s usual calm was quickly dissipating from the nervous chattering of the women who had followed her up the rickety stairs. She took a quick look at the two children on the bed, then turned swiftly to the matrons with a reassuring smile on her face. In a firm and slightly impatient tone, she asked if they could kindly take themselves downstairs to soothe the men - ?

Mistress Karyl looked as if she might find it in herself to resist, but the rest of the women understood the tone behind the Aes Sedai’s words and soon the entire flock was trotting hurriedly back down, steps creaking under their weight. In the silence the remained, Carise closed the door behind her and strode over to the poster bed.

Two children lay side-by-side under the sheets, both fairly small-sized for their age, and unmistakably twins. Both were sweating even in the cool of the evening, and the girl awoke with a start, staring at Carise with large, liquid eyes. She made as if to wake her brother, but Carise made a soothing gesture and she subsided. Closing her eyes for a moment, Carise lay both hands on the girl’s hot forehead and Delved her. The patient gave a small shiver as the chill of the Delving ran through her, but stayed remarkable silent. Perhaps the sickness had sapped her strength.

With furrowed brow, Carise contemplated the two still forms before her. Her skill at Healing was better than average, yet she had never before come across such an ailment as the children seemed to suffer. What was certain was that their strength was slowly slipping away and there was only she on hand to help. Soon they might be too weak for Healing. The Red sister knelt beside the bed and wove saidar cautiously.

A quarter of an hour later, she emerged from the room, breaking the terse silence that had reigned in the hall below. A dozen chairs scraped back and a dozen voices called out at once. Carise suppressed the small flutter of impatience that threatened to rise, and walked steadily down the steps, red skirts swishing about her ankles. “The children will be fine,” she announced gently as the gathered villagers fell silent. “All they need is rest and good food. Mistress Alvira? Take up a pitcher of - ”

As she issued instructions to the women, the bustle began to die down as the rest of the clan slipped out the back door. There was work to do yet, and the practical Altarans, minds eased over the matter of the sick children, went off to do it.

And so it was quiet when Carise stepped out of the house and walked slowly back to the inn where she had made her lodgings. The evening air was calm and cool, and in the twilit gloom, that magical interlude between the light of day and the darkness of night, Carise admired the stillness of the town. Here and there matrons lit their night lights in preparation for the darkness ahead; a voice called and children ran towards the sound of their mothers’ voices. In her mind was the memory of two children who had been given a second chance at life in all its wonders; its gladness and despair.

Her musings put a bittersweet smile on her lips as she thought wistfully of her own family in Ebou Dar – the children of her sister’s that had that same chance to live the noble life – but a life she could not have. Yet a sudden sound broke the train of her thoughts and Carise turned, somewhat grateful for the company. Approaching from an alley between two thatch-roofed houses was a man she always looked forward to seeing when she crossed the village. Today there was a welcoming smile on his face as he made his greetings.

Carise returned the good wishes jovially, but noticed a slight gravity about his expression that did not usually belong there. Few were aware that Master Cresfel was one of Carise’ informants in the village. Sobering her own expression, Carise inquired quietly as to the matter, and followed the ageing farmer to the common room of the village’s main inn.

  15. Ruffling through papers on her desk Serena rolled her eyes and looked out the window. The moonlight shone brightly and seemed to illuminate the snowflakes as they gently fell onto her balcony. The wind howled and pushed up against the glass panes. Sighing, the Blue Sister jotted down a few more words, poured some sand onto the parchment and blew it dry. There seemed to be so much information pouring in from her Eyes and Ears lately, it was hard to keep track of it all. Potential uprisings in Lugard, revolts in Tear, children refusing to join the ranks to fight the Shadow in Saldaea. Light, was she going to have to go back to the Borderlands to support the recruiting again? Why would one not want to help in pushing back the Shadow. It seeemed to her that the Blight was moving farther and farther South each year. How she would ever convince the Queen of it, though, she was unsure.

Smiling to herself at the thought of the Queen of Saldaea, Serena always thought of the woman as being as stubborn as a mule. Most likely, it would take a stubborn woman to be a Queen of a nation on the BlightBorder. Nodding, deciding that she would commend the woman for her duties, perhaps write her a letter commenting on how well she handled things in Saldaea, then perhaps add a few choice words about what she thought of recruiting for the Army. Yes, that might do.

As she schemed in her mind, Serena stood and wrapped her long tight-fitting blue coat around her. All of her work with her Eyes and Ears, and now this plotting, had made her hungry. A trip down to the kitchens was in order. Surely there would be some tea and perhaps a cookie or two to munch on. In addition to the food, the walk would do her good. Anything to get out of her rooms. Heading for the door, the Blue Sister caught site of herself in the mirror. Her short raven like hair would need to be cut again, soon. Tilted emerald eyes flashed mischieviously back at herself. Silently, she thanked the Creator for not blessing her with the 'bold' nose of her people.

Making her way down the corridors, Serena flicked her wrist and produced a dagger. One of five that she hid about her person. The gleam of silver from the blade reflected the candlelight from the stand lamps as she twirled the dagger between her fingers. Her soft leather boots made no sound at all as she made her way down the stairwells and ramps. If she had been wearing skirts, and not her blouse and breeches, their whisking might have been the only sound about her.

Just as she reached for the large wooden door, Serena felt the presance of another female channeller quite close by. This was not unusual in the Tower, for women were using the One Power all the time, however, she knew the woman had not been there previously. Perhaps, whoever it was, would speak to her first if they wished to have words with her. If not, well, than she would go on her merry way.

    Serena Sedai

  16. Keraselle pursed her lips and furrowed her brow as the other women spoke. Corinne'dei had a serious but wise tone to her voice and Elyssa seemed as if she would sweep the former Yellow off of her feet and wrap her in her arms like any mother would do. Opposite sides of the spectrum, these women. Now, Keraselle would have to be the one that brought the two together.

The Oath that Ata gave was grand and should do well for both Corinne'dei and Elyssa, however, Kera felt as if it wouldn't quite solve all of their problems. Part of the second oldest Blue in the room, wanted to cringe as the former Yellow Sitter gave her Oath, merely because Keraselle figured there would be alot of useful information to pull out of Ata's head on her previous Ajah. Like, how they handled things and perhaps some of their Eyes and Ears. However, the other half of Keraselle was sure that wouldn't be right.

Taking a sip of her tea, merely to take up some time and put a little pressure back onto Ata, Keraselle chewed on the inside of her cheek. With a soft clinkthe Blue Sitter placed her tea cup back onto the saucer, then nodded.

"I think everyone here shall agree with me when I say that your Oath means alot to the Blue Ajah, Ata Dorje." It still seemed hard to call the Stilled woman 'Sedai'. "It is not every day that a woman, once well-renowned in the Yellow Ajah, comes to us having been Stilled only days ago asking permission to join our Ajah. Do not think we disapprove, in fact, I feel honoured that you would even consider us." Taking a moment to steal a look at the other Blues in the room, Keraselle was not sure where to go from here. It really was not up to her. The choice was Corinne'dei's.

"I, too, respect our decision. I am glad that Elyssa Sedai supports you." However, I do wish she had said something a little earlier about all of this. It was clear to Keraselle that Elyssa had known of this before any of the others. It would have done a great deal of good to maybe have informed the other Sitters and perhaps the First Selector of this before hand. Nodding, Keraselle decided she would have a few choice words with the young Sitter later. "I have no problem with your choice to join us, with the understanding that you will be as one of the fresh Blue Sisters normally would be. There will be no special treatment and you will have to work your way through the Ajah as the rest of us had to." Pursing her lips again, Kera could feel Corinne'dei's eyes on her, and she wondered if the woman would have her head later.

Ata would be invited to enter the Ajah, and given her shawl just as the other had. However, it would be strange. There were still matters that needed to be taken care of, but there really was no reason that the previously Stilled woman could not enter the Ajah. If she had to, Kera would explain her thoughts to the First Selector.

With that, Kera nodded and looked at the First Selector levelly. "That is all I have. I see no reason that Ata Dorje should be turned from the Ajah."

  17. Serena watched with interest as Sirayn moved away from the wall. No longer was the other woman feigning a relaxed position. The Green Sister took on a new stance, although slightly shorter than Serena, the Blue still felt as if she were only knee high. Gray eyes took on a more intimidating colour, and Serena waited patiently. She knew that more was coming. The feel of tha air around the two of them seemed to thicken.

“Then kneel to me and swear. Swear that from this day onward, you put no other’s business above my own; that you obey my orders and defend my interests where you can; that you will never speak so much as a word of my business to anyone.†The shock of what Sirayn was actually asking struck Serena like a ton of bricks. Shakily, her knees buckled and she was forced to the ground. How appropriate to be in the kneeling position. Silently, the Saldaean sister prayed to the Creator. The Wheel's weaving was more complex than she had ever thought. Had her admiration and determination for Sirayn brought her to this? Would she betray her Ajah to do as Sirayn wished?

Warmth flooded into her cheeks in crimson rage. Serena was angry, with herself mostly. However, somewhere inside her mind, in a tiny pocket, she could feel her excitement and her yearning to Serve All in the best way SHE could. Which reiterated what she was about to do. It made everything alright. Serena would be able to Serve the world in the best way that she could, by following Sirayn Simeone. The woman had a knack for being involved with some of the darkest schemes in the White Tower. Being involved in devastating plots like Namandar. Those were only the things that Serena actually new about. Yes, by submitting to this fierce woman, Serena would be a better servant and her Ajah would simply have to deal with that.

The secrecy already tugged at the Blue's soul. How would she be able to hide this from her Ajah Sisters. What would she do if Kieryn asked her? Or Espara? Both women she admired almost as much as she admired Sirayn. Biting the inside of her cheek, Serena crossed her right arm over her chest and placed her hand on her heart, the other hand she extended upwards to Sirayn with her palm facing the sky. It was a strange way to make an Oath, however, Serena had only sworn her Three Oaths and had never sworn any other. During the swearing of her Three Oaths over the Oath Rod she had knelt and held the Oath Rod. Now, she had nothing to actually swear on, so she figured a hand on her heart and the other somehow touching Sirayn in a non-affectionate way would be appropriate.

It seemed, according to Serena, that Sirayn hesitated slightly before placing her palm face down on Serena's extended one. The Blue did not clasp the Green's hand or intertwine her fingers in the other womans, they simply touched palm to palm.

Breathing in deeply, Serena began. "I swear by my honour and hope of salvation, under the Light and before the Creator, that I will serve you, Sirayn Simeone of the Green Ajah. From this day forward I, Serena Morrigan of the Blue Ajah, will obey your orders and defend your interests where I can. I swear never to speak a word of your business to a soul and above all..." When Sirayn had whispered the last of her orders, that she would be able to trust Serena, it had affected the Saldaean woman more than the other woman could ever know. To be able to trust one in the White Tower was more than anyone could ask, but if Serena wanted to be anything to Sirayn, it would be that the woman could confide and trust in her. "Above all, I swear by my life and my duty as an Aes Sedai that I will be honest with you, and you can trust me."

Tears welled in Serena's eyes. She refused to let them fall. Yes, she had done the right thing, she knew she had, but a part of her ached for her Ajah and her duty to them. No longer was she trustworthy to the women she was supposed to feel the closest to. Now, she was on her own.

Thrusting one dagger up her sleeve and the other into a knee high leather boot, Serena looked around her skeptically. Tilted emerald eyes flashed like fire as they grazed over the Tower Grounds. A soft breeze ruffled her raven pixie like hair, and she wrinkled her nose. The air smelled of burning woods, something that reminded her of a trip into Arad Doman not too long ago. The thought brought back memories of chaos and disorder in lands that had always seemed to be at war with eachother, though this time, it had come to practically burning down the world. Not quite, but riding into that fiery storm, it had felt that way.

Standing and buttoning up her long tight fitted coat, she dusted off the embroidered flame of Tar Valon that was stitched in white surrounded by blue. She had two embroidered pieces on that coat, both were the same. One was on the back and larger, the other flame was smaller and stitched over her heart. The wind blew through her coat and made it billow out behind her, however, cold was not something that Aes Sedai let themselves feel.

Looking up towards the sky, the Blue Sister wondered which direction the fire was coming from, she hoped that the farmers had it under control. If not, she was sure some of her Sisters would be called to aid them wth dousing it. Clenching and unclenching her fist in frustration, Serena was itching to leave the White Tower. It had been quite some time since she had last left, atleast that's what if felt like. Clouds and smoke intermingled in the sky to the point where one could not even tell which was cloud and which was smoke. Shrugging and turning around, dismissing her thoughts, the small Aes Sedai began to make her way up the steps of the Tower. Each one she took, she took as if she were walking up them for the first time.

Being that mindful was something that she had to focus on, however, she had learned that mindfulness was a good thing for Aes Sedai to learn, useful as well. It was then that she noticed the petitioners huddled outside and the Accepted speaking to them, trying to calm their nerves most likely. She wondered silently if any of the townspeople were there to complain about the farmers burning their fields, or getting carried away with the flames. Hopefully, that would not turn into a problem today.

Making her way past the petitioners, Serena caught site of someone that she had not seen in almost as long as it had been since she had left the Tower. The dimuntive Green Sister was walking towards her, it seemed. Her eyes were certainly fixed on Serena. One could not make that mistake with Sirayn Sedai, when the woman had her gaze held on you, you knew it. However, unlike plenty of her other Sisters, Serena had always looked up to Sirayn. In fact, the woman may have had something to do with her almost choosing the Green Ajah. Upon entering speaking range with the Aes Sedai, Serena nodded and addressed Sirayn.

"Good morning, Sister. May the Light favour you."

: : : : Smoke whispered across the vast skies carrying a sharp scent of ash and char. She lifted her dark head, looked toward the sky with eyes the same flint grey, and contemplated for a moment the swirling patterns made by smoke across the clouded and lowering skies; a subtly different hue, less purple, a shade darker so that a keen gaze could just tell the two apart. Gusting wind brought a patchwork sound of cries far distant from this place. One lean hand tightened on the book in her grasp until the leather binding creaked; for she had her own memories of fire, from that ruin once played out across the scorched and burning fields of a foreign plain, to a fresher tragedy … but no more would she dwell on loss and burning, nor the grave which lay so quietly distant from here. Some times of despair did not bear recalling only to work their old and bleak magic again.

: : : : The scraping protest of leather stressed beyond its tolerance drew back her attention. Gently she eased her grasp on the book, smoothed its cover. The grey light gleamed briefly along its title, a concise word, naming a certain city close to her heart; that haunt of intrigue and deception where the darker half of her heritage lay. It would still take a better intellect than hers to match the complexity and the layering of trickery which these common folk went about daily, but for one raised in a farming place far removed from all courts and even from the basic laws of literacy and trade, she was learning hard and fast. Experience was a rough tutor but a necessary one. No longer would she count herself a poor second to those who had spent all their lives in convoluted courts, nor accept their dominance over her, when her goals were set so high and herself as sharp witted as any of them. Nor could she. There was no more time to let long held lack of faith hold her back.

: : : : Half a hundred different schemes still lay in her thoughts regarding the distant future and all the trials they faced. Not the least of which concerned that most precious of commodities … people. And speaking of people, a watchful glance across the street far below her vantage point, proved that somebody of great interest was now passing by just beneath her. A flash of blue, dark hair, a straight bearing. For this precise reason she had chosen to take herself and her book up to the lofty wall top; once she had found herself a corner where she would not be disturbed, not that anyone would trouble a sister even in the white city, it was a simple practice to observe the workings of the city below her. Lazily rising from her seat Sirayn slid the book into the plain scrip she carried and bent her steps toward the nearest stone stairs down onto the street.

: : : : A few minutes later, the picture of serenity, Sirayn crossed toward her errant sister. Today she was looking casual in bronze skirts, a plain white coat, but this was an artless semblance meant to ease the fears of those who approached her. There were days for summoning every ounce of dignity which came with her age and standing, days for intimidation, cunning and grimness … and there were days when a gentler approach might work better. All the same, anyone who looked upon her hard and ageless face could not have doubted that this was not a woman who ordinarily cared how she came across. “The Light shine upon you, Serena Sedai.†The greeting was civil to a fault, as she fell in step with the northerner woman, feigning unconcern. “I would distract you a moment, if I may. I have some matters to discuss which may be,†a sardonic and fractional lift of her brow told anyone watching closely enough that there was still a mordant wit beneath this mask of composure, “of interest to you.â€

Serena arched her own dark eyebrow to match her Sisters. "Distract me, Sister?" It was not easy to distract any Aes Sedai, however, a Blue was always determined to look between the lines and search beneath the surface. Just gazing at Sirayn Sedai, Serena had already noted the unusual bronze skirts that adorned the Green Sister. The hard woman had been known for wearing breeches and boots, not dresses. Which mentioned something to the Blue all in itself. Had Sirayn been searching her out since she had dressed that morning? Was the dress that she wore a tactic to calm whomever the woman approached with her distractions, this day?

Nodding, Serena stepped in beside Sirayn and they stepped off to the side. It was not a move they honestly had to make, most of the Accepted, novices and Petitioners stepped out of their way after giving proper courtesies. However, it was purely for concentration that Serena stepped aside. She would have to listen to every word the woman said, and watch her every move. Aes Sedai were all great players of Daes Dae'mar, better practiced than the best player in Cairhien, surely.

Sirayn Simeone had said she had matters to discuss with her that may be of interest to her, than she must. Racking her brain for reasons in which the Green would have to persue her in such a way, garbed the way she was, made Serena curious. However, the woman could ALSO not be using her dress to do anything at all. Such was the way of the Great Game of Houses. Eyes glittering, Serena responded. "I am all ears, Sirayn. Shall we move into a better place to speak, or shall I make us private?" In Tower Politics, it would usually have been Sirayn to ask that question, however, it was the elder Aes Sedai who had sought her out in the first place. Let the Green think on it and devise her own answer for Serena not going along with the way things should be run, according to strengths in the One Power. The Green may not be strong as some, except for her affinty with Earth, which was practically legend to some Novices and Accepted.

The same went for the other Sisters that would be watching the two converse. If Serena and Sirayn simply wove a Ward against Eavesdropping around themselves, the other Aes Sedai would take note and wonder what they were up to. Perhaps another room would be more appropriate. Prying eyes and ears were not unknown in the cool corridors of the White Tower, Serena could not say she had not delved into others conversations without proper motives. It was known that it would happen, even if it was not spoken of outright. Pursing her lips and biting the inside of her cheek, the Saldaean Blue cast her eyes about the corridor wondering which decision Sirayn would make.

So devious, this one, like all her Blue Ajah kindred; a skilled observer might pick out only hints of tension about her, in the straight set of her shoulders and lying beneath the cool composure all their sisters kept about them. Accomplished though she was, it would take a better watcher than her to pick out any significance in the direction of those occasional glances. In place of understanding she smoothed her skirts with a careless gesture which any passer by might take to be idle; but which a Blue Sister and expert in Daes Dae’mar ought to recognise as a subtle sign that their attention had been noted. Let the other woman wonder what she was thinking beneath this impenetrable mask; let her recall all those years of expertise and experience which the northerner herself lacked; and let her know disquiet.

It did not take an expert to note that some import lay in Serena’s offer, a slight diversion from the ordinary rules of protocol, which would have instructed that she herself make this decision with as little input from the other as she required. However, the younger woman kept properly within the bounds of her authority. Had she gone so far as to place the ward without first asking permission, for example, that would have merited a sharp remark and perhaps more had Sirayn been inclined to press it. Even the newest sister knew better than that. And, she reflected drily on all her meetings with their like, one could always trust a Blue Sister to know their limits.

Idly she let her gaze wander among the crowds stirring around them as though considering the matter at hand; it was merely a light shade of a pretence, she was not overly concerned should Serena discern that she had already laid plans for this, or better measures would have been put in place to appear spontaneous. “You are most generous to offer, Serena Sedai,†nobody would ever say that she had been less than courteous in public, “but I think we might go for a walk, if this is acceptable to you, of course. The view from the city walls at this hour is most agreeable.†And there was less chance of their council being interrupted. Nobody would hear their discussion at such a height above the ground, and should anybody attempt to listen in by less ordinary means, they would sense that channelling before the threat became immediate. All this she left unspoken; a Blue Sister should understand such layers of meaning in an instant, and any comment along those lines might draw unwanted attention.

At this hour people choked the streets like insects swarming. Striped awnings fluttered above shop doors and the wind was a jangle of shouts and clashing din. The clamour unsettled her somehow. She liked the quiet and the silence better, when she did not have to watch every moment who she let get close to her. The shadow still waited. Even a moment’s carelessness could lead to blood on the streets of this white city, and should she survive an organised assault, it would be tricky to explain yet another attempt on her life to the authorities. Instead she drew Serena away from the crowds with little more than an inclination of her head, a subtle movement in her stance, signalling rather than anything else. No touching, of course. There had been days when she sometimes wished touching had never been invented.

Up on top of the wall ash still lay faintly on the breeze and above their heads smoke coiled lazily across the iron grey heavens. Nevertheless, it was cool and silent; the commotion of the city lay far beneath them, and as they paced out the length of one wall, only the sound of their steps rose quietly around them. “You Blue Ajah folk are the adventuring sort, or so I’m told, and players in our beloved game at that,†Sirayn began in seeming idle tones; deceptive, they hid the true significance behind her words. “You are in fighting form just now, I trust? You are ready to bring steel and saidar to the Tower’s foes?†Lazily she leaned against the cold stone wall. “To tell the truth, it’s your head that interests me more than your hands … and from what I’ve seen of you, that head interests me a lot. Yes, I have a proposal for you. That’s if you should be willing to hear it.†She looked out over the white city, feigning lack of concern, and waited for her response.

The two Sisters moved out into the bustling crowds of the City. Hawkers called their wares and peddlers flashed their delightful items in the marketplaces as they passed. If it had been a different time, a time when she was still in the banded hems of the Accepteds dress, Serena would have stopped to spend hours just looking at all of the crafts and devices brought from all over the world. Now, there were much more important duties at hand. The Blue was not one to be dazzled by jewels and pottery. They would be noted and filed away in her head for later use, but never something she would buy. Unless her Gaidin wished to have such things. Perhaps if Thera wanted a necklace or a ring she would buy one for the woman, but nothing for herself. Finances could be spent on matters of much more importance.

Removing her eyes from the crowd and watching Sirayn meander in and out of the crowd, Serena caught the inclination of the Greens head and took it as a hint to follow her up and out of the crowd. The buzz of the City dwindled as they ascended the Tower Walls, their footsteps echoed on cool stone steps. Believing that the air would be more fresh at this height would be correct, at any other time. The ashes from the fire were more apparent up on the walls. Little flakes that could have been snow collected themselves on Serena's coat. The pair walked for a moment and Serena prepared herself for either a tongue-lashing of sorts or a proposition for a well planned excursion. What she got was a proposition, all right.

“You Blue Ajah folk are the adventuring sort, or so I’m told, and players in our beloved game at that,†Serena furrowed her brow slightly in curiosity, knowing there would be more to hear. “You are in fighting form just now, I trust? You are ready to bring steel and saidar to the Tower’s foes?†Placing her hands infront of her and clasping them gently, so Sirayn could see that she was hiding nothing with her hands out in plain view and relaxed. "Ofourse, Sirayn." She nodded.

What suprised the Blue was the amount of comfort Sirayn showed next, the Green Sister leaned against the wall, as if she were actually relaxing. Watching intently with her vibrant green eyes, Serena cursed herself silently. Burn the bloody Game of Houses! Just for once she would have liked to have a conversation without all of the added stress of Daes Dae'mar. A slight nod she gave to prod Sirayn on. “To tell the truth, it’s your head that interests me more than your hands … and from what I’ve seen of you, that head interests me a lot. Yes, I have a proposal for you. That’s if you should be willing to hear it.â€

Arching a dark eyebrow in question, Serena was quite sure that Sirayn had just complimented her. Not something one received from the Green every day. However interesting the compliment was worded, it was the content that sparked Serena's curiousity. "And if I hear it, Sister, must I be willing to carry out the task before I even agree to hear the proposal?" The Blues eyes shone mysteriously with mischief. Shaking her head, Serena let a smile grace her lips. "I will hear it Sirayn. I would wish to hear it." Sirayn was one of the most trusted Sisters in the White Tower, Serena would hear and adhere to the womans words.

The brief arch of a brow told many stories should she be inclined to pry them out. Cool and in command though she was, nevertheless Sirayn was briefly stunned by the woman’s next words; perhaps she looked too deply into layers of meaning but it seemed to her that the Blue Sister had just pointed out the flaws in agreeing to do anything she said without first hearing the proposal … then chosen to do it anyway? Either she was misleading herself entirely, not so rare of an occurrence, or Serena Sedai held a lot more faith in her than was merited. For a moment imagination diverted her with all the many mischiefs she could put this sitation toward … but ruthlessly she stamped out those temptations; choosing instead to remain on the path she had decided for herself before this.

“You are most gracious.†A spark of irony behind the grey gaze showed no secrets gathering as she was the considerable strength of articulacy; all the chaos which words could wreak lay before her only to be channelled through the walls of her own determination. Though this morning’s meeting was fraught with dangers, a part of her liked the risk singing through her blood recalling most keenly the high stakes she had gambled all her life; revelling in the possibility that one misplaced word might bring all her schemes crashing down about her ears. Only her own will and fortitude could bring this to a successful completion. “Our meeting this morning, as you have I suspect already devised, is no accident. I have sought you out for one purpose and one alone. I shall dispense with the deception; I want you to put your talents to work for me.

“There will be considerable danger, no small amount of intrigue, and most likely so many laws and rules will be broken that our continuing freedom will rely on your silence. I shall require from you promises that limit your liberty and fill you with frustration. You will come to see shadows in every corner and darkness in the brightest parts of the world. You will know blood and secrecy and loss. You will be tricked and lied to until you cannot trust anyone any more. In the hardest times you will look for support and find none because I will not be your friend, I will be be your leader, and that is a cold job and permits no closeness. Doubtless you will regret your pledge to me.

“I can offer you little in return … save advancement; fresh knowledge; and the chance to be part of the greatest schemes this world can offer. I can show you the true identity of the Shadow. I can teach you more than you ever knew existed. If you should so choose, I can protect you from the wrath you will bring on yourself. Make no mistake … I will not make of you a hero, for we do not walk in the bright places where crowds cheer and rain blossoms upon our path; I will require of you determination and courage beyond such people’s understanding and a greater responsibility than they can possibly fathom. And they may call us sinners, but they have that luxury, because we are the shield that keeps them safe.

“Already you know more than is perhaps prudent for your own security.†A brief grey glance brought home that impact. “If I were to tell you more, I should require certain promises from you, as I have already laid out. However, should you feel that this is not to your liking … and I could hardly fault you for it given all the truth I have laid before you … only say the word and I shall look elsewhere.â€

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The crease between her brows revealed itself as Sirayn began to speak of promises and oaths, of silence and danger. Serena's lips parted as if she were going to speak, only to close them again as Sirayn continued with her partial-explaination of what she wanted of Serena. Biting the inside of her cheek, the Blue Sisters eyes attempted to scan the Green before her. In every moment her deductions jumped from one possibility to the next. Surely, Sirayn had not lost her mind... A twitch in the corner of her mouth revealed the beginnings of a smile, yet she held it back. This was no laughing matter, even if her thoughts did distract her, it was no time to let it show.

The intrigue Sirayn spoke of had already taken hold of Serena. Her bloody curiosity had gotten the better of her again. As the Green spoke of decpetion, danger and loss, of blood and secrecy, she must have known those words would rope Serena in. Emerald eyes sparkled with the possible outcomes of such a task, of such oaths made and broken. What could Sirayn possible send her off to do? Did it really matter? Wouldn't she jump if the woman said frog? Unfortunately, it was so. If Sirayn clapped and pointed to the Pit of Doom, Serena would swallow her pride, tuck her tail between her legs, go and be loyal about it.

Not many women had that power over the Blue Sister. Actually, none that she could think of. How had she let this happen? What made Sirayn so bloody special that Serena would risk her life for? Biting down on her cheek, tasting blood, Serena knew that time was being wasted on asking such rhetorical questions. Things were the way they were, that was that. She could always look into them later.

“I can offer you little in return … save advancement; fresh knowledge; and the chance to be part of the greatest schemes this world can offer. I can show you the true identity of the Shadow. I can teach you more than you ever knew existed. If you should so choose, I can protect you from the wrath you will bring on yourself..." The words rang through her soul. The Saldaean Aes Sedai yearned for knowledge of anything really, but being shown the true identity of the Shadow...THAT was what most of her work as an Aes Sedai had been all about. To be involved in such schemes and be offered such knowledge, Serena knew she could not give up this chance. Yes, she had let herself be controlled by a woman that could prove to be one of the most powerful and dangerous women in the White Tower, but she could not let this opportunity slip through her fingers.

Nodding, casting her eyes at the horizon to think on her words and not look like she was throwing herself at Sirayns feet, Serena tapped her lips in thought. Silence seemed to echo in her ears before she cleared her throat to answer. Returning her piercing gaze to Sirayns gray eyes, she nodded. "I have heard you and respect you for coming to me like this, Sirayn. I believe I understand the point you are making, the danger and enticing schemes you have lain at my feet and I am sure I will never know their true meaning until I am directly involved in those specific situations. However, I would wish to hear more." Pledges and oaths needed to be made. Was she jumping into this blindly? "I will hear and adhere to you, Sirayn Sedai. What is it you wish of me?" It was too late...Serena had been sucked in.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hours seemed to inch past in intensifying silence. The other sister contemplated the distant skies for some time and not a hint of her opinion crossed that smooth face. Drawing an equal composure about her Sirayn waited, clasping the white coat carelessly about her, permitting nothing to stir her outward semblance of calm; only the metal tasting wind whispered between them and stirred the fallen ash about their feet. How long did it take one to decide? Tension coiled tight as wires within her and her thoughts returned as though compelled by magnetism to all the damage she might face should this meeting go astray. She had spoken perhaps more than was prudent already and the younger woman might make her life very difficult should she choose.

The briefest of nods eased her worries all at once. Beneath that emerald gaze she refused to let a moment’s hesitation grant the Blue Sister any hold over her, but nevertheless inwardly Sirayn knew an immense relief … and she thanked her hard won skills in argument for smoothing her path immeasurably. And at the same time some foreign feeling rose up in her hard and fast: a strange wild sense of excitement, revelling in her own triumph, a success satisfyingly won by nothing other than her own skills. This morning she had accomplished a remarkable feat. It remained only to secure her grasp on Serena Sedai; long a target of hers, perhaps ever since their first meeting in the library, such a long time ago … she had a penchant for respectful youngsters and the Saldaean with her quick wits and warmth had proven most agreeable company. If she had not understood this game she might have imagined that some day she and Serena could be friends. And it made her a little uncomfortable to be thinking in these terms when she knew better than to place an instant’s trust in anyone.

Smoothly she moved in to place the finishing touches to this deal; a pact now agreed in concept at least which might lead to all sorts of failure or glory; something most likely as illicit as the arms trade to Murandy … not that she was likely to mention that in public as boldly as she had spoken of this. “Then kneel to me and swear. Swear that from this day onward, you put no other’s business above my own; that you obey my orders and defend my interests where you can; that you will never speak so much as a word of my business to anyone.†The words rang hard in the stillness yet behind her stony calm waited something far more fragile … a hope that there was somebody at least in whom she could place her faith. Ending on a whisper. “Swear to me that I can trust you.â€
