  1. James, if you are using your phone for access, you need to get a Mophie or similar portable charger. It could even recharge a tablet. We made sure the Mophie and the Insignia charger were charged before the storm hit. Not that we needed it. We haven't lost power yet. I think the strongest sustained winds we've had so far have been about 25 mph.

  2. There are some hilly areas in north central Florida, which is well away from the coast.

I'm in the Panhandle and if Irma stays with her current track the most we'll see are tropical storm winds. I got a call from a friend in Charleston,, SC, today, which (if Irma stays on current track) will be on the northeast side of the storm (aka, "hell") when it gets up there.  I told her to load her horse up and bring him and herself here. Her husband will be staying at Joint Base Charleston.

I've been praying Irma turns into a fish but it doesn't look like that will happen. I just hope she doesn't shift further west and go into the Gulf. As warm as the Gulf is now, it's an incubator for strengthening...

  3. I won't lynch you, Tamcha, but I'll totally be jealous!

I love history! Some of my favorite places to visit (other than all the historical places I went to in Europe as a kid) have been to historical sites with my kids on their field trips, and once on our way home from Canada, and another I visited a few times when I was TDY.

    Those are:

    St. Augustine (school trip)

Colonial Williamsburg and other historic sites in the area (school trip)

Tallahassee (school trip to Spanish and Native American settlements and State Capitol)

    Gettysburg (while TDY)

Ft. Boonesborough (on route to FL from ONT)

Gettysburg is amazing. When you are standing at Little Big Top and imagine the Confederate troops massing an assault on that position from below . . . it's sobering. I've only done quick driving tours but would absolutely love to do the tour on horseback.

Ft. Boonesborough was awesome. They were having re-enactments that weekend and there were some Shawnee there that had set up some shelters and they invited us (hubby, boys and I) in and told my boys the story of Chief Logan (my oldest son's name is Logan).

And I'd totally love to live in Colonial Williamsburg and "play" all day in period dress!

As a kid when we lived in Germany, I loved going to the castles. My favorite was Burg Eltz. And we used to camp outside Bundenbach in a valley next to a creek and at the top of one of the  hills you could see the ruins of a castle. Oh, the times we had tramping through the woods there, through the caves, and through the ruins . . . I'm sure they've closed off the caves by now but back then they were our playground! BTW, our parents didn't know . . . they were depending on two teenage boys to keep us smaller kids safe but the teenage boys wanted to explore the caves so . . .  Truly haunting history there, with the ruins on the hill and the iron-barred cell in one of the caves . . .

  4. You are young Edward VI, the long-awaited male heir to Henry VIII who became King when he was nine. You’re very smart for your age (you know several languages and you love to write) and you’re not very sporty. If you’re not careful, you may miss out on something (like your childhood) so beware people telling you what to do!

    Also, I never got infected!

"You were in the right place at the right time. Maybe you lived in one of those isolated areas in the Netherlands, or even Poland! The Kingdom of Poland refused to do trade with anyone, and being landlocked, the kingdom was able to bypass the entire pandemic as it ravaged Europe for over 300 years."

  5. I haven't taken the quizzes yet but will once I'm on my home computer and have time.

So, I have a question. Do you all remember the nursery rhyme:

    Ring around the rosey,

    A pocket full of posies,

Ashes, ashes, we all fall down!

Yep, it supposedly goes back to the Black Death.  Some people believed that by carrying a "posey" (pocket or pouch) of flowers/herbs and breathing through it would prevent them from catching the plague. Plague victims were burned in hopes of preventing spread of the disease (ashes, ashes) . . . but MANY people died anyway (we all fall down).

At one time I was fascinated by this time period and with the plague and read several books about it. I can only remember bits and pieces, though.

  6. I've been trying to find the perfect gown for you, Elgee, but all seem to be pinterest or can't be posted here or whatever. Finally found one and was going to attach it here but can't find how to do it. *sighs*

Anyway, the best dressmaker is Tar Valon is working on the dress custom colors, just for you . . . in colors of the Ajahs.  I'll post it if/when I figure out how to attach it here.

  7. I managed to get my Keeper rotation siggie and numerous others from Photobucket today but only uploaded the Keeper one to Imgur and am not going to wear it yet because I want to show off my Prefect and House Cup siggie for awhile.

I also need to download the program that will allow me to rotate siggies . . . as soon as I remember what it's called! LOL!

    Thanks, Ithi!

  8. Elgee, I am so sorry to hear about your sister. All of you will be in my prayers. *hugs*

With her chemo treatment (Tx) do they send her home with a bag/pouch that allows the chemo to be administered over those 3 days? That's what my dad has. He gets it on Mondays and they remove it Wednesdays.

  9. Welcome, Niblet!

And let's be careful, everyone else, for spoilers, especially in her Intro thread.

Niblet, if you don't want spoilers, avoid the book discussion board. I do highly recommend the social boards, like the White Tower and Band of the Red Hand. Please do stop in and get to know us all.

Now, now, Nyn . . . Egwene has always been one of my favorite characters. Not my absolute favorite, but one of my favorites. Does that mean you don't love me any more? LOL!
