We are quite fortunate to live relatively close to a city. The new models are quite clever that the paint doesn't seem to easily bleed into the wrong areas.

My boy tried the spray primer, but he held the can too close to one and it slightly melted the details. So now he uses slightly watered down base paint in fine layers. He actually uses black for the base cos then the shadows are kind of built in.

if you want to try again, you can go into the shops and they sit down with you and show you the paint techniques. They will even give you a free model and let you use their paints, the first time. And you can keep going back fir extra lessons and skills, like adding transfers and stuff.

It's these little battle dude models. My son is super careful so he paints the Space Marines. I'm a lesser mortal so do the Tyrannids cos they are more organic and forgiving. He doesn't play the game. He just loves painting the models. There's a table set up for it in my living room full of paint and brushes and wet palettes etc
