  1. Finished the last book of the Black Company, Soldiers Live. I'm curious if there will be more. While the story does come to a satisfying end it is left in such a way that there is more story that can be told.

Moving back the the MBotF with Dust of Dreams. I have just two of the Malazan books left in the main story line. Plus the Esselmont books.

  2. Finished the first Black Company book, onto the second now (Darkness never sleeps?). The series has grown on me since about halfway through book 1. Enjoying it now.

Did you finish the first Chronicle (contains first three books) or just the first Book The Black Company?

  3.

How are you liking it so far?

It's good. I do prefer the first few books to these most recent ones. However, I did enjoy Murgens description of happenings in Dejagore and I am intrigued by the events surrounding the bigger events further south. (no spoilers there, I think). I have a hundred pages or so to go in She Is the Darkness and it seems that a lot of the little plot lines are coming together into the main quite nicely. Looking forward to the conclusion. (If there is one. Bleak Seasons really didn't come to any conclusion at all)

  4. Finished Bleak Seasons. Kind of an abrupt ending. Starting She Is the Darkness next. I'll probably finish up the with the other Black Company books before moving on as well. I think Water Sleeps is next and after that is Soldiers Live.

  5. I also just started The Black Company and I have to say it's surprisingly hard to get used to the first person POV.

It took me a little while to get used to as well. It was worth it though. I am enjoying the books. The story is good and there is a lot of action.

It's worth the effort. I didn't like when it changed from Croaker to Murgen but I got used to it.

I am at that point now. Taking some getting used to for me too.

  6.

How you liking the series so far? I finished the last one Soldier's Live awhile back and am hoping the see the next book someday. One thing about Cook; he certainly doesn't spare any character from the axe.

I like it a lot. It is taking a little for me to get used to the differing viewpoints. Liked the original flow of info coming from Croaker. Still, very enjoyable. Looking forward to everyone coming back together (hoping this happens).

  7. Completed Glen Cook's Shadow Games and almost finished with Dreams of Steel. Liked the first very much, with Croaker as captain and such, not sos sure about the second. I like it but I want more about the company and this book just does not deliver on that front. At least not yet. I've only got thirty pages to go, so... Next up is The Silver Spike. I understand this also follows events away from the Black Company, although many familiar characters return after a book off.

  8. Finished the last Chronicle of the Black Company, The White Rose. I loved these books.

A major theme is that though we'd like to think things as black and white, everything is just varying shades of grey. The characters do a lot of rationalizing and soul searching when they realize they may be closer to black than they'd like. When faced with one evil or another which do you choose and can you support one to defeat an even darker foe? Morality is often times an afterthought to survival. Makes for interesting introspection.

Pacing was fantastic. The story never gets bogged down in too much inner dialog and keeps moving from one desperate situation to another. Cook keeps things fairly simple without giving everything away. The action is great and outcomes are never certain. All in all a very satisfying read.

I am continuing with the Black Company and beginning Shadow Games, the first Book of the South. I am interested to see what happens to the remnants of the company and how they cope with the events at the end of The White Rose.

  9. Completed Shadows Linger by Glen Cook. On to The White Rose. Also began reading The Wonderful Wizard of OZ by L. Frank Baum. Reading that to my daughter now though she doesn't pay any where ner as much attention as my wife does. Never new there were so many OZ books. I think I downloaded 12 to my ereader.

  10. Completed The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane and The Black Company by Glen Cook.

Wasn't sure what I was getting with the Crane book. I liked it. Don't think I've ever read anything based on events during the civil war. Interesting look at the thoughts of one man during brutal battle.

The first Black Company book was pretty good. Can definitely see where Cook influenced Erikson when he wrote The Malazan books. Erikson puts in a lot more detail and developed his characters more thourouhly but that may be the difference in perspective as well. The BC is a first person narrative so it's more a retelling of events from that one mans experiences. Guess that doesn't really lend well to in depth growth of other characters.

On to Shadows Linger the second book about the Black Company.

  11. Finished The Measure of the Magic by Terry Brooks, and The Time Machine by HG Wells. Kind of getting into the classics all of a sudden. Might try The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane next. Or maybe stay with wells and read The Invisible Man or War of the Worlds.

I did just order the omnibus editions (4 of them) of the Black Company. Should arrive Saturday so I don't want to start anything too intense before then.

  12. Read Alice's Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Got it free on Kindle to test the ereader out. Funny how I've never read so many of the classics. Found out that many of them are available free so now I have a ton of stuff to read tha I probably should have read years ago. Plus I was able to pick up some favorites like A tale of Two Cities.

Purchased the first 5 WOT books as well. Will come in handy when it's time for my reread of the series.

Now reading The Measure of the Magic by Terry Brooks. It is the latest Shannara title.

  13. Just finished Toll the Hounds, 8th tale of the Malazan book of the Fallen. Now I have choices. As much as i'm loving the Mlazan stuff i'm not sure if I want to jump into the next title, Dust of Dreams, or move on to something else. I just got a copy of The Black Company. Also recieved Inheritance for christmas along with the newest installment of the Shannara series. I picked up a copy of Pillars of the Earth recently as well. Plus, at some point I would like to begin a reread of WOT before the final book is released. I'll have to think about it a bit I guess.

  14. After this, I may or may not read The Vampire Lestat (probably will

You should go ahead and read Lestat. Gives all the background on him from his time as a young french aristocrat through his making as a Vampier and his various adventures and travels. Good read.

I think I am going to start Bonehunters next. Ready to return to the Malazan Empire at last.

  15. Finished Cerulean Sins. Went ahead and started Incubus Dreams. So busy with work and other stuff it's hard to commit to anything serious right now. The Anita Blake stuff is not my usual stuff but it is good for a quick read and does not require or encourage emotional attachment. I guess I need that right now. Just something to read.
